Stylometric analysis of texts relies on learning characteristic traits of writing styles for authors. Once these patterns are discovered, they can be compared to the ones present in other text samples, to recognise their authorship. This recognition can be compromised if input datasets are prepared without taking into consideration possible stratification of the input space, leading to specific grouping of datapoints, or sub-classes within distinguished classes. The paper shows research dedicated to construction of various structures of input datasets, and combinations of such structures between train and test sets. In the research the influence of different stratification forms on the performance of selected popular classification systems was observed. To minimise the number of influencing factors, a task of authorship attribution was performed as binary classification with balanced classes. Stylometric descriptors exploited belonged to lexical and syntactic group, giving frequencies of occurrence for chosen style-markers. It resulted in real-valued attributes and these values were explored without applying discretisation, in order to avoid the possible bias of this procedure on observations. © 2022 The Authors. Who is Going to Help? Detecting Social Media Influencers to Spread Information About Missing Persons

Although the disappearance of individuals is not a recent phenomenon, it remains a prevalent issue that inflicts significant emotional distress upon the families of the missing. Unfortunately, state action about this matter is lacking in several countries. One promising approach to address this problem involves appealing for information and reaching out to a wider network of individuals who may possess the ability to assist in locating the missing person. Social media platforms, such as Twitter, have proven to be particularly effective in disseminating information. However, the effectiveness of information dissemination is crucial to raise awareness within the community as a whole. This paper presents a method for identifying influential individuals on Twitter, with a focus on their geographic location, to maximize the diffusion of information about missing persons. Given the significance of the social circles and communities associated with the disappeared individuals, incorporating location data becomes an essential feature in the missing person domain. The contribution of this paper is threefold: (i) a novel method to identify location-aware influencers on Twitter based on an operational research model, (ii) an analysis of the information dissemination using publicly available missing person data collected from Brazilian non-governmental organizations and state websites, and (iii) a new missing person dataset that can serve as a valuable resource for further research. © 2024 IEEE.

Integrating electrophysiological signals in larger systems is getting wider due to the fact that such modalities facilitate the daily tasks of users. However, the high cost of monitoring systems (e.g., oscilloscopes) limits the testing and analysis of the acquired signal from such noisy systems (i. e., electrophysiological devices). The proposed system is a part of a larger proj ect that deals with the identification of sign language movements through the use of Muscle-computer Interfaces. On one hand, the user is able to display the signal acquired by the electrodes on an LCD screen. On the other hand, the system helps a mute patient to issue a special message to his surrounding environment that does not know the sign language to ask for help. The second feature is not unique, as it can be replaced by any other application based on the user's needs. The system was tested on several persons, and the results are promising. © 2022 IEEE.

Sensor network localization (SNL) is a challenging problem due to its inherent non-convexity and the effects of noise in inter-node ranging measurements and anchor node position. We formulate a non-convex SNL problem as a multiplayer non-convex potential game and investigate the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium (NE) in both the ideal setting without measurement noise and the practical setting with measurement noise. We first show that the NE exists and is unique in the noiseless case, and corresponds to the precise network localization. Then, we study the SNL for the case with errors affecting the anchor node position and the inter-node distance measurements. Specifically, we establish that in case these errors are sufficiently small, the NE exists and is unique. It is shown that the NE is an approximate solution to the SNL problem, and that the position errors can be quantified accordingly. Based on these findings, we apply the results to case studies involving only inter-node distance measurement errors and only anchor position information inaccuracies. © 2024 IEEE.

Visually impaired people encounter several challenges in their mobility and navigation. Their daily activities are obstructed due to their inability to adapt or recognize accurately their surroundings, especially outside their house which they are more familiar with. Thus, it becomes the main reason of accidents, falling off, getting lost in unknown areas, etc. Furthermore, one of the sensory systems that helps the body to process data about the external environment is the visual system. Blind people also lose touch with the outside world, develops poor motor habits, which results in postural problems as a result. This project will assist visually impaired people in their daily life and simplify normal tasks through a system combining two previously designed projects, 'Smart Shoes for Blind and Visually Impaired People', and 'Human posture monitoring device'. The multifunctional system is developed with the goal of securing safe movements for visually impaired people as well as maintaining a good back posture by detecting leaning postures (LP). The purpose of the smart shoe is to identify obstacles and protect the user from unintended accidents. A compatible Android application has been developed to alert the user when there is an obstruction or when he is walking on a wet surface. Voice alarms will be used to acoustically alert the user. If the user collapses, a message with their position will be sent right away to a relative. On the other hand, the smart vest will identify the position of the user's back and alert him to maintain a straight posture through the same application as well. As the system is dealing with human health, some safety measurements would be taken into consideration to implement a safe electrical system in order to reduce error and to increase accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

In this paper, we focus on distributed learning over peer-to-peer networks. In particular, we address the challenge of expensive communications (which arise when e.g. training neural networks), by proposing a novel local training algorithm, LTADMM. We extend the distributed ADMM enabling the agents to perform multiple local gradient steps per communication round (local training). We present a preliminary convergence analysis of the algorithm under a graph regularity assumption, and show how the use of local training does not compromise the accuracy of the learned model. We compare the algorithm with the state of the art for a classification task, and in different set-ups. The results are very promising showing a great performance of LT-ADMM, and paving the way for future important theoretical developments. © 2024 IEEE.

The time-sensitive networking (TSN) is one of the critical technologies for the future development of the industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). This is because TSN can ensure the delay and reliability of network transmission. On the other hand, TSN has also introduced the IEEE 802.1 Qbv. Since the scheduling of IEEE 802.1 Qbv is based on time control gates, the time synchronization (TAS) function can also allow TSN to communicate with fifth-generation wireless communication (5G) to support IEEE 802.1 Qbv. Because IEEE 802.1 Qbv will affect delay and jitter, it is one of the issues that urgently needs to be solved. Considering the problem of time synchronization, this paper focuses on the issue of queue gate control and proposes reinforcement learning (RL) to help us. Since reinforcement learning does not require over-examining the characteristics of past data but depends on environmental changes, adjustment will be more convenient. In addition, this paper also carefully explores the queuing status and defines in detail the problem to be solved. Finally, the experimental results show that the proposed gate control using RL is more efficient than other comparison methods. © 2024 IEEE.

Handoff and Deposit: Designing Temporal Coordination in Cross-Device Transfer Techniques for Mixed-Focus Collaboration

When working together, people frequently share information with each other to enable division of labour, assistance, and delegation of responsibility. The literature has explored both synchronous and asynchronous transfer techniques, known as Handoff and Deposit, respectively. However, current cross-device environments tend to only provide a single mechanism. Moreover, we have little understanding of the impact of different techniques on collaborative process. To understand how Handoff and Deposit may be designed to support complex sensemaking tasks, we followed a Research through Design process to iteratively design Handoff and Deposit techniques using paper and digital sketches and high-fidelity prototypes. We consulted the HCI literature to corroborate our findings with studies and descriptions of existing cross-device transfer designs and to understand the potential impact of those designs on mixed-focus collaboration. We learned that as we move away from a restricted physical workspace and leverage the flexibility of digital personal devices, there is a large design space for realizing cross-device transfer. To inform these designs, we provide five design considerations for cross-device transfer techniques: Transfer Acceptance, Action Dependencies, Immediate Usability, Interruption Potential, and Connection Actions. © 2022 ACM.

Automated Parts Segmentation of Sperm via a Contrastive Learning-Based Part Matching Network

Sperm morphology measurement is vital for diagnosing male infertility, which involves quantification of multiple subcellular parts for each sperm. Instance-aware part segmentation networks have been introduced to address this task by automatically identifying individual sperm and segmenting their subcellular parts. However, major limitations of state-of-the-art instance-aware part segmentation networks include: 1) they are time-consuming and computational expensive due to sequential processing and multi-stage frameworks;2) they perform poorly for densely packed sperm that overlap or cross over one another. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes 1) integrating instance identification and subcellular part segmentation within a single-stage framework to save inference time and memory usage;2) dividing a sperm target into simpler components (head and tail) to improve prediction accuracy, followed by a contrastive learning-based matching method to pair the head and tail. Experimental results on our clinically collected human sperm dataset demonstrated that the proposed network not only outperformed state-of-the-art CP-Net (by 3.5% APpvol) but also achieved realtime inference (48.0 frames per second), effectively meeting the clinical requirements for automated parts segmentation of sperm. © 2004-2012 IEEE.

Towards econometric estimation of the cost of cyber conflict

In the modern era, understanding the costs and implications of conflict extends beyond traditional kinetic boundaries into the cyber realm. While economic analysis has historically been concerned primarily with the state’s ability to sustain and engage in physical warfare, recent research has begun to quantify the additional societal and collateral costs. To shed light on the total costs of the use of cyber weapons and capabilities, we argue that a comprehensive analysis must be done using econometric tools. This paper describes two important tools in this toolkit, counterfactual analysis and bottom-up accounting, in the context of cyber conflict. It discusses how significant collateral costs manifest in the inadvertent aftermath of vulnerability stockpiling for use in cyber weapons, coupled with the losses and thefts of these resources. Such incidents represent not only a direct financial burden but also erode the trust and goodwill of nations who do not disclose the discovered vulnerabilities. Finally, multiple data sources and bottom-up accounting techniques are used to conduct a case study estimating the aggregate societal cost of cyber conflict in the Ukrainian war between late 2013 and 2020. The aggregate cost of the 76 recorded cyberattacks is estimated to be approximately $160M. Finally, counterfactual analysis is concluded to face significant data availability challenges preventing high quality synthesis of the two methods described.
