Artificially intelligent agents deployed in the real-world will require the ability to reliably cooperate with humans (as well as other, heterogeneous AI agents). To provide formal guarantees of successful cooperation, we must make some assumptions about how partner agents could plausibly behave. Any realistic set of assumptions must account for the fact that other agents may be just as adaptable as our agent is. In this work, we consider the problem of cooperating with a population of agents in a finitely-repeated, two player general-sum matrix game with private utilities. Two natural assumptions in such settings are that: 1) all agents in the population are individually rational learners, and 2) when any two members of the population are paired together, with high-probability they will achieve at least the same utility as they would under some Pareto efficient equilibrium strategy. Our results first show that these assumptions alone are insufficient to ensure zero-shot cooperation with members of the target population. We therefore consider the problem of learning a strategy for cooperating with such a population using prior observations its members interacting with one another. We provide upper and lower bounds on the number of samples needed to learn an effective cooperation strategy. Most importantly, we show that these bounds can be much stronger than those arising from a "naive" reduction of the problem to one of imitation learning. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. The paper considers the properties of the difference equation describing the dynamics of the animal population, obtained earlier in the framework of studies of tundra communities. We have considered a special case in which the model is represented by a one-parameter difference equation that defines a one-dimensional unimodal mapping of a segment into itself, similar to the well-known triangular (tent) mapping, supplemented by a region with a constant value. A change in the mapping parameter generates a bifurcation scenario, in which stability zones arise, characterized by orbits of a constant period, interspersed with zones with more complicated, "quasi-chaotic" regimes. Based on the properties of the n-iterated triangular mapping, a necessary and sufficient condition for the localization of cyclic orbits in the considered type of unimodal mappings is formulated, which makes it possible to identify stability regions for any given period n. On the basis of this condition an algorithm for detecting stability zones is proposed. The main subject of the study is the fractal properties of the set, which is the complement of the obtained set of stability regions to the entire domain of mapping definition. The dynamics of the DH (n) value is obtained, the limit of which at n → ∞ is equal to the fractal dimension dH. It is shown that in the studied range of n (2 ≤ n ≤ 22), the DH (n) H T = 0, which means that the complement of the set of stability regions consists of isolated points. © 2024 Institute of Physics Publishing. Toward AI-Driven Cough Sound Analysis for Respiratory Disease Diagnosis

Respiratory diseases represent a significant health concern that attracts scientists and health professionals due to their impact on public health. Various techniques are used to identify respiratory conditions, from diagnosis to therapy, such as computer Tomography (CT) scans and Chest X-ray (CXR) images. However, these methods require expert radiologists for manual examination, posing time challenges. This is especially critical during a pandemic, where swift detection and early treatment are paramount. In this regard, an AI-based diagnostic system for automatic identification would play a major role, particularly regarding the analysis of patient cough patterns. Coughs, as a diagnostic cue, provide distinctive information about glottis behavior related to different respiratory pathological cases. This work proposes a comparative investigation of respiratory disease detection techniques using cough sounds, with COVID-19 as a case study. Our study involves the application of three distinct models: a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, a CNN-Support Vector Machine (CNN-SVM) hybrid model, and a transfer learning-based model. We methodically evaluate different model architectures, ranging from custom-built networks to pre-trained deep models, applying spectrogram or Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients (MFCC) in transfer learning-based feature extraction, to determine which is the best approach in terms of accuracy, precision, recall, F1-score, and loss. The experimental findings highlight the superior performance of transfer learning and MFCC feature extraction upon deep learning results using CNN and CNN-SVM with best validation accuracies ranging from 99.55% to 100%. This significant advantage is attributed 1) the capacity of transfer learning to utilize prior knowledge from related domains, even in data-scarce target tasks, and 2) the proficiency of MFCC in capturing and representing the rich and essential information embedded within cough sounds. Simple, low-cost one-step fabrication donor-Acceptor hybrid thin films are highly desired for the practical realization of low-cost organic solar cells. In this work, oriented and hybrid thin films of P3HT/CdS were successfully fabricated by a solvent-free friction transfer (FT) method utilizing Cadmium xanthate [Cd(Xt)2] as CdS precursor and regioregular P3HT in a single step. Complete conversion of [Cd(Xt)2] to CdS with optical band gap of 2.53 eV after thermal annealing at 200 °C was confirmed by absorption spectral investigation. Polarized absorption spectral results revealed that FT-processed hybrid thin films of P3HT/CdS were oriented and extent of molecular orientation was enhanced after the thermal annealing at 200 °C. Highly oriented hybrid thin films with dichroic ratio of 6.95 was prepared under the optimum fabrication conditions such stage speed, stage temperature and applied load of 1200 mm/min, 85°C and 2.4 kg, respectively. © 2023 FTFMD.

A generative approach for user-centered, collaborative, domain-specific modeling environments

The use of low- and no-code modeling tools is today an established way in practice to give non- programmers an opportunity to master their digital challenges independently, using the means of model- driven software development. However, the existing tools are limited to a very small number of different domains such as mobile app development, which can be attributed to the enormous demands that a user has on such a tool today. These demands exceed the mere use of a modeling environment as such and require crosscutting concerns such as: easy access, direct usability and simultaneous collaboration, which result in additional effort in the realization of such tools. Our solution is based on the idea to support and simplify the creation of new domain-specific holistic tools by generating it entirely based on a declarative specification with a domain-specific meta-tool. The meta-tool Pyro demonstrated and analyzed here focuses on graph-based graphical languages to fully generate a complete, directly executable tool starting from a meta-model in order to meet all cross-cutting requirements. One major advantage of microservice cloud architectures is the agility with which microservices can be replicated to help improve the overall quality of service and meet service-level contracts. Their challenge is to carefully balance the horizontal microservice replicas with the vertical resources of CPU, memory, and IO that are allocated to each microservice. The objective of such balancing act is, of course, to avoid both service bottlenecks and resource wastage. In this paper, we present OSμS, a new open-source microservice prototyping platform that has been developed and instrumented from the ground up with the objective of collecting fine-grained, non-proprietary metrology on microservice mesh performance. We will illustrate the use of OSμS for developing and evaluating machine-learning algorithms for the horizontal and vertical autoscaling of microservice architectures. A hybrid algorithm based on decision-tree learning will be implemented on OSμS and compared with the academic state of the art and existing cloud-provider solutions. The advantages of such algorithm in improving horizontal and vertical resource utilization will be highlighted.

Human performance models can be included in industrial system models to improve the design of the industrial system, manufacturing processes, and product design. In our use case, a critical process in the production of a new airplane was being considered for automation. This process requires the highest quality assurance and is normally performed manually. Robot assistance could improve quality and efficiency. A human performance model focused on worker fatigue was developed, taking into account characteristics of the workers, robots, and tasks. Two different automation scenarios (fully manual, semi-automated), with different worker characteristics such as skill, age, motivation, etc. were studied. Using historical production line data in the fully manual scenario, and simulated data for the semi-automated scenario, global fatigue scores and graphical visualization were generated by the model for each scenario, allowing the system architects to understand the effects of the future production system on workers, including errors, time lost, costs and overall resilience of the system. © IISE and Expo *** rights reserved.

Energy-Aware Task Allocation for Teams of Multi-mode Robots

This work proposes a novel multi-robot task allocation framework for robots that can switch between multiple modes, e.g., flying, driving, or walking. We first provide a method to encode the multi-mode property of robots as a graph, where the mode of each robot is represented by a node. Next, we formulate a constrained optimization problem to decide both the task to be allocated to each robot as well as the mode in which the latter should execute the task. The robot modes are optimized based on the state of the robot and the environment, as well as the energy required to execute the allocated task. Moreover, the proposed framework is able to encompass kinematic and dynamic models of robots alike. Furthermore, we provide sufficient conditions for the convergence of task execution and allocation for both robot models. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The economic dispatch problem (EDP) poses a significant challenge in energy management for modern power systems, particularly as these systems undergo expansion. This growth escalates the demand for communication resources and increases the risk of communication failures. To address this challenge, we propose a distributed algorithm with network-independent step sizes and an event-triggered mechanism, which reduces communication requirements and enhances adaptability. Unlike traditional methods, our algorithm uses network-independent step sizes derived from each agent's local cost functions, thus eliminating the need for detailed network topology knowledge. The theoretical derivation identifies a range of step size values that depend solely on the objective function's strong convexity and the gradient's Lipschitz continuity. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm is shown to achieve a linear convergence rate, assuming the event triggering threshold criteria are met for linear convergence. Numerical experiments further validate the effectiveness and advantages of our proposed distributed algorithm by demonstrating its ability to maintain good convergence characteristics while reducing communication frequency. © 2024 John Wiley & Sons Ltd.
