In this paper, we propose a novel parameter estimator for probabilistic models on discrete space. The proposed estimator is derived from minimization of homogeneous divergence and can be constructed without calculation of the normalization constant, which is frequently infeasible for models in the discrete space. We investigate statistical properties of the proposed estimator such as consistency and asymptotic normality, and reveal a relationship with the information geometry. Some experiments show that the proposed estimator attains comparable performance to the maximum likelihood estimator with drastically lower computational cost.

Robots are being used more and more in dangerous environments such as space and disaster areas. However, when robots are at risk in dangerous environments, the time during which robot operators can issue risk avoidance instructions is limited. Therefore, robots should be able to acquire behaviors that enable them to autonomously avoid danger. In this paper, we present a probability-based reinforcement learning (PrRL) method and apply it to robot behavior acquisition.

This paper addresses the control of a hydraulic servo system rod subject to uncertainty in parameters and to an unknown but bounded disturbance. The proposed backstepping-based robust controller guaranties a uniformly ultimately bounded tracking error leading to practical stability of the closed loop system. StateObserver is also designed using backstepping approach to estimate the states. The controller assures robustness against perturbations and uncertainties in the dynamics of the system. Numerical simulations illustrate the efficacy of the proposed scheme.

During the last years, a large number of information in digital form has been exchanged all over the world. Several techniques have been developed in order to protect the users' privacy of digital content. Steganography is one of them. Its use dates back for many centuries, yet it has been used profoundly in the last decades, as the proper mathematical background has been developed along with the need of the music and film industries. One aspect of this development is the use of DRM (Digital Right Management) as the main method of protecting digital assets. This work presents two new detection methods of steganographic content through the use of compressive sensing. The first method is a probabilistic filter that can increase the probability of detecting steganographic content in images, in case where the LSB method is used. The second one helps identifying the original from stego images when DCT steganography is used, after applying a filter with compressive sensing technique. © 2014.

An environment of ambient intelligence or an ambient environment is an environment with intelligent applications able to adapt their behavior with the change of context. The ambient environments use many communicating objects;each one offers different and specific services. The majority of these services can perform only one specific task. The composition of services is then proposed to resolve the complex tasks. Multi agent systems underline the social capacities such as the communication, the cooperation, the resolution of conflict, the negotiation, the argumentation, and the emotion. They thus quickly became the principal paradigm in the ambient intelligence. In this context, we propose an adaptive multi agent system for automatic composition of services in an ambient environment. For each device is associated an agent. The set of the agents coordinate their competences taking into account the context in order to perform an activity. The system suggested is based on the Contract Net Protocol in which the agents exchange their proposals in the form of call for proposal. JADE platform (Java Agent DEvelopment framework) is used to implement our system. © 2014 ACM.

The paper presents and evaluates the simple simulation of the landing gear used in small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The main goal was to set up software-in-the-loop (SIL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulation environments that can be used in testing flight control and flight estimation algorithms from take-off to landing. Small UAVs without gear braking were considered in the study, the stopping of aircraft was due solely to frictional forces. The model developed can be used in simulations to describe aircraft motion from standstill on the ground through take-off to landing and stoppage. The parameters were tuned experimentally for each small UAV type. Finally, SIL simulation results are presented and evaluated in the paper.

The purpose of this tutorial is to introduce and analyze models of neurons from a control perspective and to show how recently developed analytical tools help to address important biological questions. A first objective is to review the basic modeling principles of neurophysiology in which neurons are modeled as equivalent nonlinear electrical circuits that capture their excitable properties. The specific architecture of the models is key to the tractability of their analysis: in spite of their high-dimensional and nonlinear nature, the model properties can be understood in terms of few canonical positive and negative feedback motifs localized in distinct timescales. We use this insight to shed light on a key problem in experimental neurophysiology, the challenge of understanding the sensitivity of neuronal behaviors to underlying parameters in empirically-derived models. Finally, we show how sensitivity analysis of neuronal excitability relates to robustness and regulation of neuronal behaviors.

Transmission and distribution (T&D) systems for electric power are assembled with a large amount of aged apparatus, the deterioration of which may cause a decrease in reliability. In order to maintain high efficiency and high quality in T&D systems, it is important to minimize both present performance costs and future performance costs. Typical present performance costs are T&D losses, and typical future performance costs are failure losses and apparatus maintenance for overall T&D system optimization. We have to consider concurrently two concepts that are an asset management system and a smart grid. This integrated concept, which we have proposed as Intelligent Grid Management System (IGMS), achieves optimum control that includes the present power flow and the future maintenance of the T&D system. In this paper, the effect of temperature rises in transformer windings is formulated and integrated into an objective function to determine transformers with power flow control. The derived power flow control optimizes the load sharing of each transformer by keeping a balance between the T&D loss and degradation in the transformers. The degradation of aged transformers is prevented by reducing their load factor, or the aged transformer is replaced with a new one that accepts a relatively high load factor. © 2015 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

DECIGO (DECi-hertz Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory) is the planned Japanese space gravitational wave antenna, aiming to detect gravitational waves from astrophysically and cosmologically significant sources mainly between 0.1 Hz and 10 Hz and thus to open a new window for gravitational wave astronomy and for the universe. DECIGO will consists of three drag-free spacecraft arranged in an equilateral triangle with 1000 km arm lengths whose relative displacements are measured by a differential Fabry-Perot interferometer, and four units of triangular Fabry-Perot interferometers are arranged on heliocentric orbit around the sun. DECIGO is vary ambitious mission, we plan to launch DECIGO in era of 2030s after precursor satellite mission, B-DECIGO. B-DECIGO is essentially smaller version of DECIGO: B-DECIGO consists of three spacecraft arranged in an triangle with 100 km arm lengths orbiting 2000 km above the surface of the earth.
