Urysohn measure driven integral equations in the space of bounded variation functions and applications

Motivated by the fact that bounded variation (often discontinuous) functions frequently appear when studying integral equations that describe physical phenomena, we focus on the existence of bounded variation solutions for Urysohn integral measure driven equations. Due to numerous applications of Urysohn integral equations in various domains, problems of this kind have been extensively studied in literature, under more restrictive assumptions. Our approach concerns the framework of Kurzweil-Stieltjes integration, which allows the occurrence of high oscillatory features on the right hand side of the equation. A discussion about interesting consequences of our main result (given by particular cases of the measure driving the equation) is presented. Finally, we show the generality of our results by investigating two examples of impulsive type problems (from both theoretical and numerical perspective) and giving an application in electronics industry concerning polarization properties of ferroelectric materials.

Nowadays, many diagnostic methods based on providing information about the patient in the form of photographs, projections, cross-sections. Almost impossible to conduct an effective and efficient treatment without the use of modern tools to support the process of medical analysis. The main goal of this work is to develop a tool for medical diagnosis of colorectal cancer in order to determine the level of cell growth. As part of the work developed and tested the processing and analysis algorithms microscopic images of the colon cancer cells, leading to a quantitative description of the local parameters of the object, include the quantity, the growth and cell growth over time. The proposed algorithm has been written in the Matlab. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Intrusion detection systems produce alert sets of low quality. Many post-processing methods have been proposed to make alert sets more meaningful to security analysts. Relevant research has to deal with an important task;implementing proposed methods and carrying out required experiments. In this paper we propose a platform which can be used as a test-bed for conducting intrusion detection alerts postprocessing research. All the standard functionality is already implemented for the user, as she has to implement only the core logic of her method. Additionally the platform offer important reuse and evaluation capabilities. Finally we use the platform to implement a previous method of ours, in order to test its usefulness. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014

Queries are the foundations of data intensive applications. In model-driven software engineering (MDE), model queries are core technologies of tools and transformations. As software models are rapidly increasing in size and complexity, traditional tools exhibit scalability issues that decrease productivity and increase costs [17]. While scalability is a hot topic in the database community and recent NoSQL efforts have partially addressed many shortcomings, this happened at the cost of sacrificing the ad-hoc query capabilities of SQL. Unfortunately, this is a critical problem for MDE applications due to their inherent workload complexity. In this paper, we aim to address both the scalability and ad-hoc querying challenges by adapting incremental graph search techniques – known from the EMF-IncQuery framework – to a distributed cloud infrastructure. We propose a novel architecture for distributed and incremental queries, and conduct experiments to demonstrate that IncQuery-D, our prototype system, can scale up from a single workstation to a cluster that can handle very large models and complex incremental queries efficiently. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

The paper proposes a new approach to the design of speed profile for trains concerning time table and energy efficient operation. The method takes into consideration the inclinations of the railway tracks, the speed limits, the nonlinear traction curve and resistances to achieve the energy-efficient speed. The paper demonstrates that by using a predictive optimization approach both punctuality and reduction of energy consumption can be achieved. The proposed method has been tested by simulation based on a real case study. The presented algorithm could be used in drivers' training or as a core algorithm for automatic train operation. © 2014 EUCA.

Natural User Interfaces (NUI) offer rich ways for interacting with the digital world that make innovative use of existing human capabilities. They include and often combine different input modalities such as voice, gesture, eye gaze, body interactions, touch and touchless interactions. However much of the focus of NUI research and development has been on enhancing the experience of individuals interacting with technology. Effective NUIs must also acknowledge our innately social characteristics, and support how we communicate with each other, play together, learn together and collaboratively work together. This workshop concerns the social aspects of NUI. The workshop seeks to better understand the social uses and applications of these new NUI technologies - how we design these technologies for new social practices and how we understand the use of these technologies in key social contexts.

Interactions between dynamics on different temporal scales of about a century long record of data of the daily mean surface air temperature from various European locations have been detected using a form of the conditional mutual information, statistically tested using the Fourier-transform and multifractal surrogate data methods. An information transfer from larger to smaller time scales has been observed as the influence of the phase of slow oscillatory phenomena with the periods around 6–11 yr on the amplitudes of the variability characterized by the smaller temporal scales from a few months to 4–5 yr. The overall effect of the slow oscillations on the interannual temperature variability within the range 1–2 ° C has been observed in large areas of Europe.

This paper presents a simple, novel, yet highly effective approach for robust face recognition. Given LBP-like descriptors based on local accumulated pixel differences, Angular Differences (AD) and Radial Differences (RD), the local differences are decomposed into complementary components of signs and magnitudes. The proposed descriptors have desirable features: (1) robustness to lighting, pose, and expression;(2) computation efficiency;(3) encoding of both microstructures and macrostructures;(4) consistent in form with traditional LBP, thus inheriting the merits of LBP;and (5) no required training, improving generalizability. From a given face image, we obtain six histogram features, each of which is obtained by concatenating spatial histograms extracted from nonoverlapping subregions. The Whitened PCA technique is used for dimensionality reduction, followed by Nearest Neighbor classification. We have evaluated the effectiveness of the proposed method on the Extended Yale B and CAS-PEAL-R1 databases. The proposed method impressively outperforms other well known systems, including what we believe to be the best reported performance for the the CAS-PEAL-R1 lighting probe set with a recognition rate of 72.3%. © 2014 IEEE.
