Reconstructing 3D motions from 2D video recordings is a useful yet difficult task. In this paper, we present a crowdsourcing system for motion reconstruction. Our insight is that we may outsource motion reconstruction to indefinite users online by allowing the users to contribute their motions with popular motion sensors shipped with game consoles (e.g., Microsoft's Kinect). The system we prototyped, Motionary, provides functions for requesters to post videos of human motions on our website, and for interested contributors to help reconstruct these motions by performing these motions to our system. The system then records the 3D motions with Kinect during their performance. Our experience shows that the design has the potential to obtain quality motion data without great cost. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

To address various types of delays including the neutral-type arising in dynamical networks, this paper deals with coupled delay differential and continuous-time difference equations and develops stability and robustness criteria. Subsystems described by differential equations are not required to be input-to-state stable. No assumptions on network topology are made. To tackle networks in such a general formulation, this paper explicitly constructs Lyapunov-type functionals establishing stability and robustness of the overall networks. The construction requires only simple characterizations of subsystems in terms of inequalities with Lyapunov functions and instantaneous norms. © IFAC.

In this paper, we consider the asymptotic stabilization of a class of one dimensional boundary controlled port Hamiltonian systems by an immersion/reduction approach and the use of Casimir invariants. We first extend existing results on asymptotic stability of linear infinite dimensional systems controlled at their boundary to the case of stable Port Hamiltonian controllers including some physical constraints as clamping. Then the relation between structural invariants, namely Casimir functions, and the controller structure is computed. The Casimirs are employed in the selection of the controllers Hamiltonian to shape the total energy function of the closed loop system and introduce a minimum in the desired equilibrium configuration. The approach is illustrated on the model of a micro manipulation process with partial-actuation on one side of the spatial domain. © IFAC.

A new thin electromagnetic soft surface of strips in which ledge edges are used to reduce the strip period width and in turns a miniaturized structure is achieved. The surface is tested to reduce the mutual coupling between microstrip patches separated by a half wavelength in free space (center-to-center). A 20% relative bandgap bandwidth is achieved. The measurements revealed good agreement with the simulated results.

Spatial inputs from the auditory periphery can be changed with listener's various movements relative to the sound source. Nevertheless, humans can perceive a stable auditory environment and appropriately react to a sound source. This suggests that the inputs are reinterpreted in the brain, while being integrated with information on the movements. Little is known, however, about how these movements modulate auditory perceptual processing, especially under linearly moving environment. We investigate the effect of linearly self-motion on auditory space representation. Results of our experiments showed that the sound position judged as being located at the subjective coronal plane was displaced compared with the the listener's physical coronal plane. This distortion was observed irrespective of the style of the self-motion (active or passive). Moreover, the distortion was observed both with and without vestibular stimulation. These results suggest that self-motion information, irrespective of its origin (vestibule or any other sources), is crucial to evoke this distortion of auditory space perception.

The potential of heterogeneous multicores, like the Cell BE, can only be exploited if the host and the accelerator cores are used in parallel and if the specific features of the cores are considered. Parallel programming, especially when applied to irregular task-parallel problems, is challenging itself. However, heterogeneous multicores add to that complexity due to their memory hierarchy and specialized accelerators. As a solution for these issues we present CellCilk, a prototype implementation of Cilk for heterogeneous multicores with a host/accelerator design, using the Cell BE in particular. CellCilk introduces a new keyword (spu-spawn) for task creation on the accelerator cores. Task scheduling and load balancing are done by a novel dynamic cross-hierarchy work-stealing regime. Furthermore, the CellCilk runtime employs a garbage collection mechanism for distributed data structures that are created during scheduling. On benchmarks we achieve a good speedup and reasonable runtimes, even when compared to manually parallelized codes. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

We review some dynamical effects induced by constant effort harvesting in single-species discrete-time population models. We choose three different forms for the density-dependent recruitment function, which include the overcompensatory Ricker map for semelparous species;a modified Ricker model allowing for adult survivorship;and amodel with both strong Allee effect and overcompensation which results from incorporating mate limitation in the Ricker model. We show that these simple models exhibit some interesting (and sometimes unexpected) phenomena such as the hydra effect;bubbling;sudden collapses;and essential extinction. We underline the importance of two often underestimated issues that turn out to be crucial for management: census timing and intervention time. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

The objective of this paper is to present developed methodology for Granular Cognitive Map reconstruction. Granular Cognitive Maps model complex imprecise systems. With a proper adjustment of granularity parameters, a Granular Cognitive Map can represent given system with good balance between generality and specificity of the description. The authors present a methodology for Granular Cognitive Map reconstruction. The proposed approach takes advantage of granular information representation model. The objective of optimization is to readjust granularity parameters in order to increase coverage of targets by map responses. In this way we take full advantage of the granular information representation model and produce better, more accurate map, which maintains exactly the same balance between generality and specificity. Proposed methodology reconstructs Granular Cognitive Map without loosing its specificity. Presented approach is applied in a series of experiments that allow evaluating quality of reconstructed maps. The structure of a network dramatically affects the spreading phenomena unfolding upon it. The contact distribution of the nodes has long been recognized as the key ingredient in influencing the outbreak events. However, limited knowledge is currently available on the role of the weight of the edges on the persistence of a pathogen. At the same time, recent works showed a strong influence of temporal network dynamics on disease spreading. In this work we provide an analytical understanding, corroborated by numerical simulations, about the conditions for infected stable state in weighted networks. In particular, we reveal the role of heterogeneity of edge weights and of the dynamic assignment of weights on the ties in the network in driving the spread of the epidemic. In this context we show that when weights are dynamically assigned to ties in the network, a heterogeneous distribution is able to hamper the diffusion of the disease, contrary to what happens when weights are fixed in time.
