The main focuses of the 2nd International Middleware Doctoral Symposium took place at Middleware 2005 are discussed. The symposium is a forum for an invited group of doctoral students and it provides an opportunity for them to obtain guidance from mentors and to meet with their peers. The event is aimed to give students constructive criticism before their thesis defense and foster discussions related to future career opportunities. The symposium attracted many high-quality submissions, ensuring a competitive selection process.

Reliable and fine-grained cost-models are fundamental for real-time systems to statically predict worst-case execution time (WCET) estimates of program code in order to guarantee timeliness. Analogous considerations hold for energy-constrained systems where worst-case energy consumption (WCEC) values are mandatory to ensure meeting predefined energy budgets. These cost models are generally unavailable for commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware platforms, although static worst-case analysis tools require those models in order to predict the WCET as well as the WCEC of program code. To solve this problem, we present NEO, an end-to-end toolchain to automate cost-model generation for both WCET and WCEC analyses. NEO exploits automatically generated benchmarks, which are input for 1) an instruction-level emulation and 2) automatically conducted execution-time and energy-consumption measurements on the target platform. The gathered values (i.e., occurrences per instruction, execution-time and energyconsumption per benchmark) are combined as mathematical optimization problems. The solutions to the formulated problems, which are designed to reveal the worst-case behavior, yield the respective cost models. To statically determine upper bounds of benchmarks, we integrated the cost models into the stateof-the-art WCET analyzer PLATIN. Our evaluations on COTS hardware reveal that our open-source, end-to-end toolchain NEO yields accurate worst-case bounds.

Most middleware platforms lack sufficient support to provide reliable references for accessing distributed mobile objects in the context of dynamic environments, or they heavily depend on infrastructure mechanisms like a globally available location service. Based on the fragmented-object model and on our own middleware implementation AspectIX, this paper presents concepts and mechanisms that avoid outdated references for dynamically distributed objects without additional infrastructure services. Our approach is based on time-bound guarantees. Even in the context of malicious nodes and a partial invalidation of references a safe binding of the distributed object is guaranteed if ever possible.

Risk management is essential regarding the maintenance of a company's business processes. The ability of companies to prevent risks as well as to respond quickly and appropriately to emerging threats is increasingly becoming a crucial success factor. In order to cope with these challenges, companies constitute business process and risk management approaches. Traditional business process management focuses on the economical optimization of processes. Apart from that, risk management provides the design of robust business processes to strengthen the resilience of daily business. Both domains aim at improving business performance, but they approach this goal from a different view on the understanding of improvement. Due to the fact that optimizing recommendations of business process management and risk management may be contradictory, we propose one unified method which integrates both points of views to enable risk-aware business process management and optimization. In this paper, we introduce the ROPE (Risk-Oriented Process Evaluation) methodology which combines capabilities of business process management, risk management and business continuity management to support the holistic evaluation of business processes not only regarding their economic efficiency but also their robustness and security. The basis for this combination is the refinement of business process activities into four atomic elements (Conditions, Actions, Resources and Environments) and a process-oriented way of modeling threats, preventive and reactive counter measures as well as recovery measures. In this paper we demonstrate how risk-aware business process management and simulation can be enabled through the application of the ROPE methodology.

The versatile MOdeling, Specification and Evaluation Language is the core element of the MOSEL-2 tool. This description languages provides a high-level means for specifying models, performance measures, and the graphical presentation of results. The description languages is implemented in form of an evaluation environment that comprises translators to the modeling languages of several third-party performance evaluation tools that evaluate the specified model.

Concurrency control algorithms are key determinants of the performance of in-memory databases. Existing algorithms are designed to work well for certain workloads. For example, optimistic concurrency control (OCC) is better than twophase- locking (2PL) under low contention, while the converse is true under high contention. To adapt to different workloads, prior works mix or switch between a few known algorithms using manual insights or simple heuristics. We propose a learning-based framework that instead explicitly optimizes concurrency control via offline training to maximize performance. Instead of choosing among a small number of known algorithms, our approach searches in a "policy space" of fine-grained actions, resulting in novel algorithms that can outperform existing algorithms by specializing to a given workload. We build Polyjuice based on our learning framework and evaluate it against several existing algorithms. Under different configurations of TPC-C and TPC-E, Polyjuice can achieve throughput numbers higher than the best of existing algorithms by 15% to 56%. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. Many years of research on dependable, fault-tolerant software systems yielded many tool implementations for vulnerability analysis and experimental validation of resilience measures. We identify two disjoint classes of fault-injection (FI) experiment tools in the field, and argue that both are plagued by inherent deficiencies, such as insufficient target state access, little or no means to switch to another target system, and non-reusable experiment code. In this article, we present a novel design approach for a FI infrastructure that aims at combining the strengths of both classes. Our Fail* experiment framework provides carefully-chosen abstractions simplifying both the implementation of different simulator/hardware target backends and the reuse of experiment code, while retaining the ability for deep targetstate access for specialized FI experiments. An exemplary report on first experiences with a prototype implementation based on existing x86 and ARM simulators demonstrates the tool's versatility. © 2012 Gesellschaft fuer Informatk.

Early type-safe operating systems were hampered by poor performance. Contrary to these experiences we show that an operating system that is founded on an object-oriented, type-safe intermediate code can compete with MMU-based microkernels concerning performance while widening the realm of possibilities. Moving from hardware-based protection to software-based protection offers new options for operating system quality, flexibility, and versatility that are superior to traditional process models based on MMU protection. However, using a type-safe language-such as Java-alone, is not sufficient to achieve an improvement. While other Java operating systems adopted a traditional process concept, JX implements fine-grained protection boundaries. The JX System architecture consists of a set of Java components executing on the JX core that is responsible for system initialization, CPU context switching and low-level domain management. The Java code is organized in components which are loaded into domains, verified, and translated to native code. JX runs on commodity PC hardware, supports network communication, a frame grabber device, and contains an Ext2-compatible file system. Without extensive optimization this file system already reaches a throughput of 50% of Linux.

The evaluation framework for e-Government services proposed in this paper is designed to be a comprehensive guidance. The framework, which is intentionally used to ensure that government services meet the settled objective and citizens' needs, comprises of leading principles as stated in the Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT), and the ISO 9000 quality standard, which are then merged into the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The resulting framework is aimed at providing management with a direction to better achieve the quality goals of e-Government services and assure citizens about the quality of services provided by government organizations. © 2006 Suree, Gerald, Wichian, and Roland.

Over the past years Mobile Business has gained significant progress not only because of higher transfer rates as well as advanced processing power and memory capabilities of networks and mobile devices but also because of novel location-based mobile applications which raise many expectations in the mobile market. As a result network operators start to offer their services to 3rd party application providers which fosters the development of innovative applications. However, today mobile applications are forced to operate in the restricted environment of one network operator which is rather cumbersome for the development of novel location-based mobile applications that need to exchange location data between different network operators, over different countries. In this paper we discuss a system architecture aimed for location-based services that overcomes the aforementioned deficiencies. It uses transaction pseudonyms for the exchange of sensitive data by preserving users privacy and allows the development of novel applications that are operated by 3rd party application providers accessing different network services. We show that the management of identities and pseudonyms allows even roaming users access to different kinds of location-based services. © 2007, Australian computer Society, Inc.
