Augmented reality has been effectively used in the domain of education. Nevertheless, the development of technology is not without its problems, particularly when it comes to aligning it with existing demands and prevailing trends. The primary objective of this research endeavor is to provide a comprehensive account and identify pertinent concerns pertaining to the challenges encountered in the use of augmented reality (AR), particularly within the realm of education. A bibliometric study was performed using analytical tools available on the *** website, and the Vos viewer application was used for the viewing of bibliometric data. The study's results indicate that there are many concerns that stakeholders should take into consideration while using augmented reality in educational settings. There are four distinct hurdles in the adaptation of Augmented Reality (AR) technology to meet the demands of learning environments. These challenges include technical issues, user-related concerns, the production of AR content, and the adaptation of curricula to effectively incorporate AR into educational settings. © 2023 IEEE.

Developing creative material in STEM courses using integrated engineering design based on APOS theory

Over the past several years, creativity has been recognized as an important skill for success in STEM education, engineering design and computational thinking. There is limited research on how to apply Conceive, design, Implement, Operate (CDIO) engineering design in STEM courses and how it affects students' creativity. This study strategically integrated computational thinking (CT), STEM, and CDIO engineering design, based on Action-Process-Object-Schema (APOS) theory, into a course. This study has adopted a framework to design creative learning materials and examined how this framework impacts students' creativity. This study used a pretest–posttest nonequivalent-groups design. The study investigated a STEM course which had 40 participants (n = 40, male = 11, female = 29) for 12 weeks. 6 weeks were spent using traditional teaching and 6 weeks integrating a CDIO framework into computational thinking. All the students in the course were college students with teacher college backgrounds. To examine the impact of our course, we used a questionnaire to examine the students’ creativity before and after the STEM course was applied. Our results show that our course had a significantly impact on our students’ creativity, particularly in the case of the male students. This finding is consistent with the findings of other research studies. This study also offers some suggestions for teachers who wish to improve their learning materials. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature B.V.

The integration of augmented reality has shown to be a successful implementation within the fields of education. The resultant positive impact is highly beneficial and introduces a novel dimension to the realm of education. Nevertheless, the advancement of technology and the evolving demands of education present inherent challenges that must be confronted. This study's main goal is to provide a thorough examination of the difficulties faced when implementing augmented reality (AR) technology in educational settings. This study involves an extensive review of literature focusing on the integration of augmented reality (AR) into educational contexts. Nevertheless, the availability of literature source databases remains constrained. Another researcher has asserted that this study aims to address the limitations previously discussed. The objective of this study is to adequately rectify the limitations. The bibliometric review was carried out utilizing analytical techniques offered by Scopus, while the viewing of bibliometric data was performed employing the Vos viewer application. The findings indicate that there exist multiple factors that stakeholders ought to consider while employing augmented reality within educational contexts. The field of augmented reality (AR) encompasses four separate challenges, namely technological complexities, user-related considerations, AR content creation, and the need for curriculum adjustments to meet the learning demands associated with AR integration. © 2024 IEEE.

Recent advancements in e-learning have highlighted the significance of incorporating gamification into language acquisition processes. It is essential to examine the application of learning game features within classroom settings. The foremost goal of this systematic review of literature is to ascertain and thoroughly delineate the elements of gamification considered suitable for incorporation into environments for language learning. This investigation focuses on two main objectives: firstly, to examine the influence of diverse elements of gamification on the enhancement of language abilities, and secondly, to comprehend how these elements shape the educational approaches and experiences of students in a gamified learning environment. The review methodology employed in this study is a systematic literature review of the current literature to comprehensively analyze and map out the effective utilization of gamification in the context of language teaching. The results of our study demonstrate that the deliberate integration of game features can have a substantial impact on student motivation and engagement. Nevertheless, the efficacy of these components is contingent upon the individual attributes of students and the educational goals in question. The paper finishes by providing advice for customizing gamification tactics to accommodate the varying learner profiles in language teaching. Additionally, it suggests potential areas of future research that can contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of this pedagogical approach. © 2023 IEEE.

Deep learning models for enhanced in-field maize leaf disease diagnosis

Maize leaf diseases significantly threaten crop yields, and there is need for accurate, and accessible diagnostic tools. This research addresses this need by developing and evaluating deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) models for in-field classification and detection of four critical maize diseases: Maize Leaf Blight, Maize Lethal Necrosis, Maize Streak Virus, and Fall Armyworm damage. Utilizing field imagery captured via digital cameras and smartphones across Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, and Namibia, we developed and compared custom Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), transfer learning (MobileNetV2, InceptionResNetV2), Vision Transformers (ViT), and classical ML models. For detection, a transformer-enhanced YOLOv10 architecture was implemented. Explainable AI (XAI) techniques (Grad-CAM, LIME) were incorporated to ensure model transparency. MobileNetV2 achieved the highest classification accuracy (97%), while the enhanced YOLOv10 reached a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.995 for object detection. The best models were integrated into a mobile application deployed on edge devices for real-time diagnosis by smallholder farmers in Uganda, with performance validated through field tests. This study demonstrates a powerful, interpretable, and field-deployable solution combining advanced DL, transformers, and XAI for effective maize health management. © 2025

While much CCI research has dealt with the educational challenge of providing children with knowledge and skills for a digital society, little work has dealt with the strategic challenge of developing and implementing a digital literacy subject in K-12 education. In this paper, we explore how to develop, implement, and sustain a national program on technology comprehension by analyzing the newly established Danish knowledge center for digital technology comprehension. We draw on the concept of infrastructuring to shed light on how to create and sustain the social, material, political and organizational structures that form the basis for introducing the new national initiative. Based on our case, we distill seven propositions that describe more generally how to work strategically with this challenge. © 2024 The Authors

Congestion tollings have been widely developed and adopted as an effective tool to mitigate urban traffic congestion and enhance transportation system sustainability. Nevertheless, these tolling schemes are often tailored on a city-by-city or even area-by-area basis, and the cost of conducting field experiments often makes the design and evaluation process challenging. In this work, we leverage MATSim, a simulation platform that provides microscopic behaviors at the agent level, to evaluate performance on tolling schemes. Specifically, we conduct a case study of the Manhattan Central Business District (CBD) in New York City (NYC) using a fine-granularity traffic network model in the large-scale agent behavior setting. The flexibility of MATSim enables the implementation of a customized tolling policy proposed yet not deployed by the NYC agency while providing detailed interpretations. The quantitative and qualitative results indicate that the tested tolling program can regulate the personal vehicle volume in the CBD area and encourage the usage of public transportation, which proves to be a practical move towards sustainable transportation systems. More importantly, our work demonstrates that agent-based simulation helps better understand the travel pattern change subject to tollings in dense and complex urban environments, and it has the potential to facilitate efficient decision-making for the devotion to sustainable traffic management. Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the Perceptions of coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) questionnaire and the Information System Success Questionnaire on students when using the school's COVID-19 epidemic prevention website. The study is aimed toward analyzing both questionnaires as well as evaluating an epidemic prevention website. design/methodology/approach The school's COVID-19 prevention website and two questionnaires (Perceptions of COVID-19 and the Information System Success Questionnaire) are examined in order to investigate 73 students' COVID-19 perceptions. An open-ended question was used as the qualitative data to support quantitative data and evaluate a university's COVID-19 epidemic prevention website from a southern university in Taiwan. Findings The findings indicated that most students evaluated the school's COVID-19 website positively and were satisfied. In the open-ended questions, the majority of students rated the quality of the system positively and the need to fix some defects. Students have different COVID-19 perceptions and social distance compliance based on their current situations. Practical implications This study provides researchers and website developers a broader understanding of the construction of the school's COVID-19 prevention website and a better understanding of student's COVID-19 perceptions. Originality/value To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first study examining a school's epidemic prevention website, which is measured by the Information Success Questionnaire and the Perceptions of COVID-19 Questionnaire for college students.
