Drug-Target Interactions Prediction Based on Signed Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks

Drug-target interactions(DTIs) prediction plays an important role in the process of drug *** computational methods treat it as a binary prediction problem, determining whether there are connections between drugs and targets while ignoring relational types information. Considering the positive or negative effects of DTIs will facilitate the study on comprehensive mechanisms of multiple drugs on a common target, in this work, we model DTIs on signed heterogeneous networks, through categorizing interaction patterns of DTIs and additionally extracting interactions within drug pairs and target protein pairs. We propose signed heterogeneous graph neural networks(SHGNNs), further put forward an end-to-end framework for signed DTIs prediction, called SHGNN-DTI,which not only adapts to signed bipartite networks, but also could naturally incorporate auxiliary information from drug-drug interactions(DDIs) and protein-protein interactions(PPIs). For the framework, we solve the message passing and aggregation problem on signed DTI networks, and consider different training modes on the whole networks consisting of DTIs, DDIs and PPIs. Experiments are conducted on two datasets extracted from Drug Bank and related databases, under different settings of initial inputs, embedding dimensions and training modes. The prediction results show excellent performance in terms of metric indicators, and the feasibility is further verified by the case study with two drugs on breast cancer.

Comparison of Machine Learning Algorithms for Predicting Thyroid Disorders in Diabetic Patients

Machine Learning (ML), a subfield of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has been used successfully in the healthcare domain for disease diagnosis. Thyroid disorders and diabetes are two of the most prevalent and interconnected chronic diseases, as both play critical roles in regulating various physiological processes in the body. This study aims to predict thyroid disorders in diabetes patients using six machine learning algorithms: Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Logistic Regression (LR), Naïve Bayes (NB), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). A locally sourced dataset comprising 44,539 instances of diabetic patients was utilized, undergoing preprocessing steps including data cleaning, encoding, and balancing. Two balancing techniques were employed: manual balancing and RandomUnderSampler. The dataset was partitioned into training and testing sets using a Stratified K-Fold cross-validation approach with 10 folds to ensure robust evaluation. Each algorithm’s performance was assessed using metrics such as accuracy and F1-score. Among the models, the RF algorithm outperformed the others, achieving the highest accuracy of 95% on the manually balanced dataset and 84% when the RandomUnderSampler technique was employed. Additionally, the F1-scores for RF were 95% and 82%, respectively, indicating its robustness in handling imbalanced datasets. This study highlights the importance of selecting appropriate preprocessing techniques and machine learning methods for healthcare datasets. The findings can assist healthcare providers in making early diagnoses and interventions for thyroid disorders in diabetic patients, potentially improving their quality of life and overall healthcare outcomes. © 2025 Slovene Society Informatika. Detection of IoT Botnet Cyber Attacks Using Machine Learning

As of 2018, the number of online devices has outpaced the global human population, a trend expected to surge towards an estimated 80 billion devices by 2024. With the growing ubiquity of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, securing these systems and the data they exchange has become increasingly complex, especially with the escalating frequency of IoT botnet attacks (IBA). The extensive data quantity and pervasive availability provided by these devices present a lucrative prospect for potential hackers, further escalating cybersecurity risks. Hence, one of the paramount challenges concerning IoT is ensuring its security. The primary objective of this research project is the development of a robust, machine learning algorithm-based model capable of detecting and mitigating botnet-based intrusions within IoT networks. The proposed model tackles the prevalent security issue posed by malicious bot activities. To optimize the model's performance, it was trained using the BoT-IoT dataset, employing a diverse range of machine learning methodologies, including linear regression, logistic regression, K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), and Support Vector Machine (SVM) models. The efficacy of these models was evaluated using the F-measure, yielding results of 98.0%, 99.0%, 99.0%, and 99.0% respectively. These outcomes substantiate the models' capacity to accurately distinguish between normal and malicious network activities. © 2023 Slovene Society Informatika. All rights reserved.

Two-Stage IoT Computational Task Offloading Decision-Making in MEC with Request Holding and Dynamic Eviction

The rapid development of Internet of Things(IoT)technology has led to a significant increase in the computational task load of Terminal Devices(TDs).TDs reduce response latency and energy consumption with the support of task-offloading in Multi-access Edge computing(MEC).However,existing task-offloading optimization methods typically assume that MEC’s computing resources are unlimited,and there is a lack of research on the optimization of task-offloading when MEC resources are *** addition,existing solutions only decide whether to accept the offloaded task request based on the single decision result of the current time slot,but lack support for multiple retry in subsequent time *** is resulting in TD missing potential offloading opportunities in the *** fill this gap,we propose a Two-Stage Offloading Decision-making Framework(TSODF)with request holding and dynamic *** Short-Term Memory(LSTM)-based task-offloading request prediction and MEC resource release estimation are integrated to infer the probability of a request being accepted in the subsequent time *** framework learns optimized decision-making experiences continuously to increase the success rate of task offloading based on deep learning *** results show that TSODF reduces total TD’s energy consumption and delay for task execution and improves task offloading rate and system resource utilization compared to the benchmark method.

An ensemble approach for classification of diabetic retinopathy in fundus image

Diabetes-oriented diabetic retinopathy impacts the blood vessels in the region of the retina to enlarge and leak blood and other fluids. In most cases, diabetic retinopathy affects both eyes. If left untreated, it would eventually lead to blindness. Diabetic Retinopathy is so widespread that around 93 million adults are affected by it on a worldwide scale. Early identification and treatment would reduce the danger of serious diabetic retinopathy visual impairment. To achieve early detection, we can make use of our advancement in image processing to diagnose how severely the patient is affected by diabetic retinopathy. Using a patient’s fundus image and modern deep learning methods, we will be able to classify the result into five categories of severity: unaffected, severe, mild, moderate, and proliferate. Based on the results, the doctor would be able to determine what type of treatment is required to further avoid vision loss. The strategy outlined in this work is to employ five well-known deep learning models, namely Inception ResNet V2, VGG19, Xception, ResNet50, DenseNet112, and integrate their outcomes successfully utilizing ensemble learning. The experimentation outcome displays that the proposed approach classifies all the classes of Diabetic Retinopathy and performs better compared to other methods with a Specificity of 92.02%. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

Breaking Barriers in Satellite Image Segmentation: A U-Net Ensemble Approach

Satellite image analysis is revolutionizing fields like urban planning, environmental conservation, and disaster management, but achieving high-precision object detection remains a challenge. Among deep learning architectures, UNet and its variants have proven to be highly effective for image segmentation. This paper explores three widely used UNet variants—U-Net, Attention U-Net, and Attention Res U-Net—and evaluates their performance in identifying objects within satellite images. To push the boundaries of segmentation accuracy, we propose a novel ensemble model that strategically integrates the strengths of these three architectures. Our approach follows a structured pipeline comprising data preprocessing, patchification, training data preparation, model training, and ensemble integration. By combining multiple models, the ensemble method enhances performance, robustness, and generalization in complex satellite image segmentation. We assess the effectiveness of the proposed model using the Dubai Satellite Imaging dataset from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC). Experimental results show that our ensemble model significantly outperforms individual models, achieving an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 89.5% and a Dice Score of 94.46%, demonstrating its superior ability to delineate objects accurately. Furthermore, a comparative analysis with state-of-theart architectures, including Inception ResNet V2 U-Net and 3D U-Net, further validates its effectiveness. The results highlight the exceptional segmentation performance of our approach, making it a promising solution for high-precision satellite image analysis. In conclusion, our ensemble model sets a new standard in satellite image segmentation, surpassing existing methods and paving the way for more accurate and reliable deep-learning-based object detection. © 2025 School of science, DUTH.
