Machine Learning-Based Calibration Approaches for Single-Beam and Multiple-Beam Distance Sensors

Sensors are the foundation to facilitate smart cities, smart grids, and smart transportation, and distance sensors are especially important for sensing the environment and gathering information. Researchers have developed various methods to calibrate distance sensors;however, they mainly focus on using external information for calibration, which is inefficient and computationally expensive. To alleviate the above problems, we propose machine learning (ML)-based calibration approaches for distance sensors. We develop two calibration mechanisms, where the naive mechanism directly predicts the true distance, while the residual mechanism predicts the residual for calibration. The conventional ML regression algorithms are then adopted to predict the true distance or calibration residual. Experimental results show that the designed residual calibration mechanism outperforms the naive mechanism by reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) by 92.2% and mean absolute error (MAE) by 93.3% in the fitting task. In prediction, the proposed 2-D-residual mechanism achieves an improvement of 78.6% and 65.7% compared to the state-of-the-art method. The experimental results show the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed ML-based calibration method, especially for the 2-D mechanism, which achieves the highest robustness in all fitting and prediction tasks. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

Current methods in mapping the availability of WiFi networks, such as crowdsourcing platforms (e.g. Project BASS and CoverageMap) and dedicated wardriving, face limitations in terms of data recency, volume, and cost-effectiveness. Due to the downsides of both these methods, opportunistic wardriving is proposed which utilizes public utility vehicles (PUVs). This study investigates the feasibility of PUVs as potential wardriving vehicles for opportunistic coverage mapping. This method is cost-efficient and removes the problem of data recency because of its continuous daily trips. The findings suggest that opportunistic wardriving with PUVs is viable for wardriving with its capability to detect a high volume of access points (APs). Multiple runs within the University of the Philippines Diliman campus showed the PUVs’ effectiveness in detecting a significant number of APs, with higher success rates at closer distances. Comparatively, warwalking detected fewer APs, but there was a significant overlap between the methods. The study also highlighted significant differences in detected AP types, with wardriving finding more mobile hotspots and miscellaneous devices than warwalking. Overall, the results underline the effectiveness of PUVs in providing extensive WiFi coverage data and further enhancements to the detection system could optimize the approach. ©2024 IEEE.

Reliable internet access is a key enabler for economic growth. Although the Philippine government launched initiatives to improve connectivity, connection speeds remained below the global average, especially for mobile networks. This paper presents Hotspotter, a system that aims to aid implementers and stakeholders in quantifying and addressing network coverage issues. Hotspotter is an incentivized crowdsensing system that collects, maps, and visualizes WiFi and cellular data to pinpoint hotspots and dead zones for the effective deployment and relocation of WiFi access points. A mobile application for Android was developed to facilitate data collection on geolocation, nearby WiFi access points, and connected cellular networks. The user interface visualizes the aggregated data in a hexagon-grid map. Fieldwork was conducted in two sitios of Barangay San Lorenzo, Norzagaray, Bulacan to stress-test the Hotspotter system in a Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA). It was found that 2G and 4G had the widest coverage and strongest signals overall, with modal signal strengths of 4.0 and 3.0, respectively. Being at the cutting edge, 5G was not yet supported. In the end, the mobile application's passive sensing, collecting, and caching of data successfully operated even in the most isolated areas without an internet connection. © 2024 IEEE.

Decision making framework for heterogeneous QoS information: an application to cloud service selection

In recent times, appropriate decision-making in challenging and critical situations has been very well supported by multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods. The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is the most widely used MCDM method for solving decision problems. However, it restricts decision-makers to use only one type of Quality of Service (QoS) information, and it suffers from the rank reversal problem. Restriction to only one type of QoS makes the decision problems more challenging, as it restricts the decision-makers freedom. Further, the rank reversal problem makes the decision result unreliable. To address these issues of TOPSIS, we have proposed a reliable rank reversal robust modular TOPSIS (RMo-TOPSIS). RMo-TOPSIS allows crisp, interval, fuzzy, intuitionistic and neutrosophic fuzzy QoS metrics. It does not suffer from the rank reversal problem. Cloud computing provides computing services on-demand basis without involving maintenance by its users. The availability of many cloud service providers and their services makes cloud service selection a challenging problem. To validate RMo-TOPSIS, we select the cloud service selection consisting of different types of QoS metrics as an application. Drought is an environmental and economic problem. Sustainable ecosystems, water resources, food security, and all are severely affected by drought. Due to the increasing frequency and severity of droughts caused by climate change. Effective drought modeling is crucial for early warning systems and risk mitigation. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques have been developed as potential drought modeling tools that offer accurate drought modeling, providing policymakers and decision-makers with insightful information. The geographical scope of this study is the region of South Asia. This region is selected because of its heavy reliance on agriculture and vulnerability to droughts. The review offers a thorough grasp of how drought conditions are evaluated by gathering and analyzing the most important drought indicators and metrics specific to South Asia. The paper explores the current state- of-the-art in ML and DL (Complex Machine learning and deep learning models) for drought modeling, highlighting current challenges such as incomplete and inconsistent datasets, Lack of explainability and interpretability in complex ML/DL models, unavailability of benchmarks. Based on these challenges, this review suggests the following techniques to address these challenges: Data integration (Data fusion), distributed machine learning (Federated Learning) and explainable AI (XAI, SHAP, LIME, etc.). © 2013 IEEE.

EDSA-Ensemble: an Event Detection Sentiment Analysis Ensemble Architecture

As global digitization continues to grow, technology becomes more affordable and easier to use, and social media platforms thrive, becoming the new means of spreading information and news. Communities are built around sharing and discussing current events. Within these communities, users are enabled to share their opinions about each event. Using Sentiment Analysis to understand the polarity of each message belonging to an event, as well as the entire event, can help to better understand the general and individual feelings of significant trends and the dynamics on online social networks. In this context, we propose a new ensemble architecture, EDSAEnsemble (Event Detection Sentiment Analysis Ensemble), that uses Event Detection and Sentiment Analysis to improve the detection of the polarity for current events from Social Media. For Event Detection, we use techniques based on Information Diffusion taking into account both the time span and the topics. To detect the polarity of each event, we preprocess the text and employ several Machine and Deep Learning models to create an ensemble model. The preprocessing step includes several word representation models: raw frequency, TFIDF, Word2Vec, and Transformers. ABES: attention bi-directional ensemble SVM for early detection of brain tumors

Brain tumor is the most serious and deadly disease, and it is formed due to abnormal cell production. There are two different sorts of tumors including benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous), and the third level of a brain tumor is cancerous, which is a highly deadly form of cancer. Detecting brain tumors early is crucial for accurate diagnosis and efficient treatment planning. Although numerous techniques are established, the prediction techniques are time-consuming, have higher computational complexity, prone to overfitting, and have limited accuracy. Thus we proposed an Attention Bi-directional Gated Recurrent Unit Ensemble Support Vector Machine (ABES model) for detecting brain tumors. Here, the Bi-GRU layer learns the most important context information for every image. The attention layer also uses the attention mechanism to assign weights to each Bi-GRU layer output. The ensemble SVM classifier performs the categorization of brain tumors. Then, the training set is used to train the Attention BiGRU model and Ensemble SVM classifiers. The ABES classifier weights are optimized by utilizing the improved whale optimization algorithm. To demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed method, we compare it to four existing methods including Fully Automatic Heterogeneous Segmentation-based Support Vector Machine, Whale Harris Hawks Optimization-based Deep Learning, Machine learning-based back propagation neural networks, and Deep Convolutional Neural Network. Also, the ABES model is validated using the MRI dataset and the Figshare brain tumor dataset. Accuracy, precision, specificity, and sensitivity are the performance metrics used to evaluate classification performance, which achieves 97.2% accuracy, 98.61% Precision, 96.48% Specificity, and 97.34% Sensitivity, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

In neurosurgery to remove brain tumors, DICOM data, a medical imaging standard, is generated preoperatively using CT and MRI. This data is used for surgical planning. However, brain deformation problems, known as brain shift, occur during surgery, resulting in discrepancies from the preoperative surgical plan. Deviations from the surgical plan due to brain shift are a life-threatening problem as they reduce the success rate of surgery. Brain shifts have not yet been elucidated, and DICOM data acquired from MRIs and CTs for surgical planning remain stored and archived in hospital information centers. Here, it is planned to extract the physical parameters of the brain model from a large amount of brain deformation data using pre- and post-operative brain DICOM pairs, which are stored in large quantities in hospitals and discarded after a particular time. This study investigates the optimization of parameters in the brain shift detection algorithm. © 2024 ACM.

Predicting software vulnerability based on software metrics: a deep learning approach

The security of IT systems is the topmost priority of software developers. Software vulnerabilities undermine the security of computer systems. Lately, there have been a lot of reported issues of software vulnerabilities recorded in individuals and corporate systems. Software metrics-based techniques have been used and found to be effective due to low false positives and false negatives. However, there are software metrics that have not been investigated and could have an impact on the performance of the predictive model. In this study, we developed an ensemble deep learning algorithm made of LSTM, CNN, and MLP models with the non-investigated metrics as a feature to learn the latent representation of code metrics to predict anomalies in source code effectively. We trained the proposed model on the SySeVR datasets and compared the model's performance against five deep learning algorithms and four state-of-the-art SVPs. The proposed model performs better than the other deep learning with a classification accuracy of 96.17%, and a precision of 97.72%. The model's classification accuracy is 4.98% higher than that of the five deep learning models and 1.71% lower in precision than the state-of-the-art SVP. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
