Lung cancer remains a formidable global health challenge, with early and accurate diagnosis being a critical determinant of patient outcomes. In response to this pressing need, this research presents a novel approach for lung cancer diagnosis and classification utilizing hybrid neural network techniques. By harnessing the synergistic power of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and recurrent neural networks (RNNs), we have developed an integrated model capable of effectively processing diverse data sources to enhance diagnostic precision. The first component, CNNs, is employed for feature extraction from medical imaging data, such as X-ray images and computed tomography (CT) scans. These networks excel in capturing intricate patterns and subtle abnormalities in medical images, contributing to the early detection of lung cancer. The second component, RNNs, leverages sequential patient data, including clinical histories, genetic information, and longitudinal records, providing valuable contextual information for comprehensive analysis. The hybrid neural network model facilitates a holistic approach to lung cancer diagnosis and classification, as it unifies the strengths of both data-driven imaging analysis and sequential data interpretation. Experimental evaluations of this approach reveal its potential to achieve superior accuracy, outperforming traditional methods, and thus allowing for timely and precise cancer diagnosis. This advancement holds significant promise in improving the prognosis and management of lung cancer patients, potentially leading to more personalized treatment strategies and ultimately reducing the burden of this devastating disease. As such, this research contributes to the ongoing efforts to enhance lung cancer diagnosis, making strides towards improved patient care and survival rates. © 2023 IEEE.

Intelligent Traffic Management systems (ITMS) play a crucial role in advancing smart city applications by addressing the rapid increase in road traffic due to the growing number of vehicles. Effective real-time traffic prediction is essential to avoid congestion, yet existing systems often struggle with high delays and insufficient accuracy. This paper introduces an innovative ITMS based on a Hybrid Convolutional Neural Network (HCNN) to overcome these challenges. The proposed system integrates numerous smart devices, including smart vehicles, with an edge computing framework where the HCNN model is deployed. The HCNN combines Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks to enhance prediction accuracy and reduce latency. Experimental results demonstrate that the HCNN model achieves up to 95% prediction accuracy while reducing delays by up to 50% compared to conventional methods. These improvements are significant for smart city applications, ensuring timely and precise traffic management. The study validates the effectiveness of the HCNN model in improving traffic prediction and proposes its potential for broader smart city implementation. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

The idea of using the current technologies to build more sustainable smart cities has gained great popularity. One of attractive fields is Internet of Things applications to control vehicle traffic and parking which reduce energy consumption in smart cities. This paper presents an android mobile application system that allows users to check the availability and location of parking spots by using their smartphones. Main tools used for this project are the Arduino UNO and mobile application running with Android. Sensors were used to sense if the spot is empty, and then send that info to the mobile application. As the empty place is discovered to be vacant it is distinguished utilizing ultrasonic sensors which report it further. The system would not help the user to book parking spot but would show the availability of parking spot to reduce the searching time. This Smart Parking System is a basic prototype which can be improved later for real system by connecting the system to a GPS-based application which will direct the user to the spot itself and it can further be improved by using artificial intelligence to highlight different spots to different users. © 2023 IEEE.

One of the most critical features of the Internet of Things (IoT) is that it allows a massive number of devices to communicate with each other at the same time, for example (cars, smoke alarms, watches, glasses, web cameras, etc.). Given that they can connect to the Internet, the huge demand to convert systems into smart systems that can be controlled remotely increases the chances of cyber-attacks that threaten security and availability becoming more frequent, severe, and in a different form. distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks have become the most common threats in IoT. These attacks make IoT systems unreliable because complex DDoS attacks cannot be detected by traditional security countermeasures such as firewalls and intrusion detection systems (IDS). In this research, we proposed a model dedicated to work on prediction and detection of DDoS attacks on networks IoT, where we run this model on a NF-BoT-IoT-v2 dataset, which contains 37,763,497 records divided into five categories (Benign, Reconnaissance, DDoS, DoS, and Theft), and then we process our dataset to be more business friendly so it only has two categories (100,000 records broken down into 23,906 benign attacks and 76,094 DDoS attacks). This study used WEKA and MATLAB tools to perform the classification efficiently and find the most important features through feature selection. We used a decision tree (J48) machine learning classifier, a Naive Bayes (NB) classifier, and a random forest (RF) classifier. The polar regions of the Earth, specifically the Arctic and Antarctic, play a pivotal role in regulating the planet’s climate systems. These regions are highly sensitive to climate change, with observable shifts such as diminishing sea ice, retreating glaciers, and rising temperatures. Understanding these dynamics is essential for predicting broader global climate impacts. This paper presents a novel approach for monitoring and predicting these changes by integrating an attention-based transformer model with a 3D convolutional neural network (3D-CNN). The proposed model is designed to capture both the spatial features of satellite imagery and the temporal dynamics of climate data, offering enhanced predictive capabilities for key climate variables such as sea ice extent, glacier movement, and temperature variations. The dataset was split into 80% training and 20% testing with tenfold cross-validation, and the model was trained using the Adam optimizer. The results show that the proposed model achieved a remarkable accuracy of 97.43%, outperforming traditional CNN and RNN models. The model also demonstrated a precision of 98.12% for sea ice extent prediction, a 96.45% precision for glacier movement detection, and a mean squared error (MSE) of 0.35 °C for temperature predictions. These findings suggest that deep learning models, specifically the integration of transformer and 3D-CNN architectures, can significantly contribute to polar region climate monitoring, offering improved tools for scientific research and policymaking. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024. corrected publication 2024.

VisioSLR: A Vision Data-Driven Framework for Sign Language Video Recognition and Performance Evaluation on Fine-Tuned YOLO Models

With the emergence of AI for good, there has been an increasing interest in building computer vision data-driven deep learning inclusive AI solutions. Sign language Recognition (SLR) has gained attention recently. It is an essential component of a sign-to-text translation system to support the deaf and hard-of-hearing population. This paper presents a computer VISIOn data-driven deep learning framework for Sign Language video Recognition (VisoSLR). VisioSLR provides a precise measurement of translating signs for developing an end-to-end computational translation system. Considering the scarcity of sign language datasets, which hinders the development of an accurate recognition model, we evaluate the performance of our framework by fine-tuning the very well-known YOLO models, which are built from a signs-unrelated collection of images and videos, using a small-sized sign language dataset. Gathering a sign language dataset for signs training would involve an enormous amount of time to collect and annotate videos in different environmental setups and multiple signers, in addition to the training time of a model. Numerical evaluations of VisioSLR show that our framework recognizes signs with a mean average precision of 97.4%, 97.1%, and 95.5% and 11, 12, and 12 milliseconds of recognition time on YOLOv8m, YOLOv9m, and YOLOv11m, respectively.

Students' stress levels have a significant impact on their academic performance in higher education, thus it's important to identify signs of stress early on and intervene to improve academic performance. Machine learning has evolved into a powerful tool for stress prediction, allowing for proactive support of at-risk youngsters. In order to better anticipate college students' stress levels, this study presents an enhanced TriBranch CNN framework. In order to provide the best possible performance, the technique includes data preparation, feature extraction, and model training. The dimensionality and redundancy are reduced using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). After being trained and tested against other models, the Fully Conditional Temporal Bayesian Network (Fully CTBN) outperformed them all with an accuracy of 93.29%, beating both traditional CNN and FCN approaches. These findings demonstrate that the Fully CTBN approach is useful for identifying students who may be struggling academically and providing schools with the information they need to implement data-driven interventions that boost student well-being and performance. © 2025 IEEE.

Detection and prediction of failures in Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) are essential for the uninterrupted operation of production plants. Anomaly detection is usually achieved by comparing expected measurement values with actual observations. Thus, it is crucial to predict telemetry signals properly. In this paper, we research the prediction of energy consumption using state-of-the-art Artificial Neural Networks architectures (SCINet) compared with other Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) approaches on the data streams acquired from CoBotAGV. We especially focus on the possibility of applying feature weighting. We show that it can improve prediction capabilities. We also investigate resource utilization in terms of time to fit the embedded AGV environment. © 2023 IEEE.

Proteins are complex biological information granules that play a crucial role in various cellular processes within living organisms. Processing 3D protein structures, which are the most informative from the biological point of view, is both intricate and time-consuming. In particular, performing 3D protein structure searches against large protein datasets involves identifying similarities and conducting structural alignments across numerous molecules (granules). This task demands advanced methods for matching identical and similar regions within protein structures and substantial computational resources to handle large collections of macromolecular data efficiently. In this paper, we present our parallel implementation of scalable 3D structural alignment on the Apache Spark big data platform. We describe a customized approach that leverages Spark data transformations within the data processing pipeline for the alignment process. Our experimental results demonstrate that this solution, tightly integrated with the Spark processing model, is both efficient and scalable, even with the increasing volume of protein structure data. © 2024 IEEE.
