Intrusion detection systems (IDSs) have been substantially improved in recent past. However, network attacks have become more sophisticated and increasingly complex: many of current attacks are coordinated and originated in multiple networks. To detect these attacks, IDSs need to obtain information on network events from multiple networks or administrative domains. This work demonstrates that a distributed IDS (DIDS) can be composed of existing IDSs, improving the detection of misuses in a multiple network environment. We use a grid middleware for creating a service-based intrusion detection grid. We demonstrate through experimental results that the proposed DIDS allows the integration of heterogeneous existing IDSs and improves the detection of attacks by exploring the synergy between existing IDSs.

Simulation studies of grid scheduling strategies require representative workloads to produce dependable results. Real production grid workloads have shown diverse correlation structures and scaling behavior, which are different than the characteristics of the available supercomputer workloads and cannot be captured by Poisson or simple distribution-based models. We present models that are able to reproduce various correlation structures, including pseudo-periodicity and long range dependence. By conducting model-driven simulation, we quantitatively evaluate the performance impacts of workload correlations in grid scheduling. The results indicate that autocorrelations in workloads result in worse system performance, both at the local and the grid level. It is shown that realistic workload modeling is not only possible, but also necessary to enable dependable grid scheduling studies.

This report summarizes the presentations and discussions of the ThirdWorkshop on Models and Aspects Handling Crosscutting Concerns in MDSD, held in conjunction with the 21st European Conference on Object-Oriented Programming (ECOOP) in Berlin, Germany on July, 31, 2007. This workshop was motivated by the fact that both Model-Driven Software Development (MDSD) and Aspect-Oriented Software Development (AOSD) are important new paradigms that both promise to change the way software is developed. Both approaches provide opportunities for concern separation. AOSD separates concerns horizontally and MDSD enables concern separation vertically. This workshop identified two key integration strategies to achieve the complementary benefits of both aspect-oriented and model-driven development. The first is the use of aspects within transformation languages to separate transformational concerns making model transformations easier to write. The second is the separation of concerns within models defined as aspects. This workshop established the key benefits of these. The major benefit of the first is easing the complexity of development and maintainability of transformations. The major benefit of the second is means to reduce the problems associated with aspects, such as, aspect interactions, fragile pointcuts and understandability.

There is a group of communication services that use resources from multiple domains in order to deliver their service. Authorization of the end-user is important for such services, because several domains are involved. There are no current solutions for delivering authentication, authorization and accounting (AAA) to multi-domain services. In our study we present two architectures for the delivery of AAA to such services. The architectures are analyzed on their qualitative aspects. A result of this analysis is that direct interconnection of AAA servers is an effective architectural solution. In current multi-domain IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) architectures, direct interconnection of AAA servers, such as the Home Subscriber Servers (HSS), is not yet possible. In this paper we argue and recommend to extend the IMS specification by adding a new interface to HSS in order to support the direct interconnection of HSS/AAA servers located in different IMS administrative domains.

We propose a scheduling-aware burst assembly algorithm to provide bandwidth-guaranteed and delay-bounded services for IP packets in IP-over-WDM networks. To transport IP packets efficiently over a network, they are assembled into bursts, and delivered within a given deadline. All IP packets in a burst should satisfy the deadline requirement, and, in turn, all assembled bursts are guaranteed to be served. To achieve this goal, the assembly and the scheduling processes of each burst need to be performed concurrently within the same active time-window (called joint window). The joint window size is set considering the deadlines of packets in a burst so that each of them (and, in turn, the burst itself) can satisfy its deadline. To guarantee service-availability for each assembled burst, the scheduling information (e.g., when and how long a slot is free for a burst) is fed back to the burst assembly process in each joint window. This scheduling information is used to determine when and how long an assembly process will be conducted. Those packets, which can not make the deadline, are not considered for the burst assembly process. Although, in our algorithm, the packets are transmitted in a burst (as described above), we investigate the packet-level performance for a IP-over-WDM network. The simulation experiments demonstrate that our algorithm can achieve low packet loss probabilities, and guarantee the delay-bound for delivered packets (loss probability and delay-bound are key factors for emerging IP services).

Following recent works on the rate region of the quadratic Gaussian two-terminal source coding problem and limit-approaching code designs, this paper examines multiterminal source coding of two correlated video sequences to save the sum rate over independent coding. Specifically, the first video sequence is coded by H.264 and used at the joint decoder to facilitate Wyner-Ziv coding of the second video sequence. The first I-frame of the right sequence is successively coded by H.264 and Slepian-Wolf coding. An efficient stereo matching algorithm based on loopy belief propagation is then adopted at the decoder to produce pixel-level disparity maps between the corresponding frames of the two decoded video sequences on the fly. Based on the disparity maps, side information for both motion vectors and motion-compensated residual frames of the second sequence are generated at the decoder before Wyner-Ziv encoding. Experimental results on stereo video sequences using H.264, LDPC codes for Slepian-Wolf coding of the motion vectors and scalar quantization in conjunction with LDPC codes for Wyner-Ziv coding of the residual coefficients show savings in terms of the sum-rate when compared to separate H.264 coding at the same video quality.

Sensor networks supported by recent technological advances in low power wireless communications along with silicon integration of various functionalities are emerging as a critically important computer class that enable novel and low cost applications. There are many fundamental problems that sensor networks research will have to address in order to ensure a reasonable degree of cost and system quality. Cluster formation and cluster head selection are important problems in sensor network applications and can drastically affect the network's communication energy dissipation. However, selecting of the cluster head is not easy in different environments which may have different characteristics. In this paper, in order to deal with this problem we propose a power reduction algorithm for sensor networks based on fuzzy logic. We evaluate the proposed method by simulations and show that proposed system makes a good selection of the cluster head.

This report deals with a universal coding problem for a certain kind of multiterminal source coding system that we call the complementary delivery coding system. Both fixed-to- fixed length and fixed-to-variable length lossless coding schemes are considered. Explicit constructions of universal codes and the bounds of the error probabilities are clarified via type-theoretical and graph-theoretical analyses.

The latest trends in distributed and mobile collaboration technologies allow people to move across team forms and organizational boundaries as well as to collaborate among/in organizations and communities. The ability to query the company's distributed knowledge base and to cooperate with co-workers is still a requirement, but new paradigms such as service-oriented computing increased pervasiveness, and mobility enable new scenarios and lead to higher complexity of systems. Independently of the business domain, private "collaboration" has become a hot issue. Virtual communities, may these be social networks or virtual enterprises, have enjoyed a tremendous popularity recently and are starting to require functionalities for collaboration in the broadest sense similar to those in business environments. The wide-spread availability of mobile devices makes support for mobility an arising topic in this domain as well.

Computational phylogeny is a challenging application even for the most powerful supercomputers. It is also an ideal candidate for benchmarking emerging multiprocessor architectures, because it exhibits fine- and coarse-grain parallelism at multiple levels. In this paper, we present the porting, optimization, and evaluation of RAxML on the cell broadband engine. RAxML is a provably efficient, hill climbing algorithm for computing phylogenetic trees, based on the maximum likelihood (ML) method. The cell broadband engine, a heterogeneous multi-core processor with SIMD accelerators which was initially marketed for set-top boxes, is currently being deployed on supercomputers and high-end server architectures. We present both conventional and unconventional, cell-specific optimizations for RAxML's search algorithm on a real cell multiprocessor. While exploring these optimizations, we present solutions to problems related to floating point code execution, complex control flow, communication, scheduling, and multilevel parallelization on the cell.
