We present three dimensional broadcast (3DB) a wireless protocol designed for communication among nodes in three dimensional space. 3DB can be used for a large variety of applications, with static or mobile nodes. However, in this paper we apply 3DB for communications among airplanes, to show that the protocol performs very good even in such difficult conditions. On the other hand, communications among aeroplanes is an important application. In this scenario, 3DB enables the broadcast of emergency and surveillance information such as real time video over the network even in presence of adverse conditions, such as coordinated terrorist attacks, which might have disrupted other communication ways. 3DB is very robust. 3DB minimizes the number of retransmissions and therefore reduce the collisions, which could considerably delay transmissions and disrupt the communications during emergency situations. 3DB performs very well in highly dynamic ad hoc networks of airplane. We have evaluated 3DB through analysis and ns-2 simulations.

This contribution explores the use of interference mitigation techniques applied to broadband satellite systems with co-channel interference. In particular, our focus is on nonlinear precoding techniques, borrowing ideas from the theory of broadcast MIMO channels. A number of schemes are compared, including several implementations of Tomlinson-Harashima precoding and their linear precoding counterparts. Simulations on realistic scenarios show potential improvements of non-linear precoding with respect to linear interference mitigation and classical countermeasures based on frequency division among beams. Also, we identify several practical issues related to the implementation of Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding in satellite communication systems.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) topology has significant influence on the performance, search efficiency and functionality, and scalability of the application. In this paper, we propose a particle swarm optimization (PSO) approach to the problem of neighbor selection (NS) in P2P networks. Each particle encodes the upper half of the peer-connection matrix through the undirected graph, which reduces the search space dimension. The results indicate that PSO usually required shorter time to obtain better results than genetic algorithm (GA), specially for large scale problems.

Advances in camera technologies and reduced equipment costs have lead to an increased interest in the application of thermography in the medical fields. Thermography is of particular interest for detection of breast cancer as it has been shown that it is capable of detecting the cancer earlier and is also allows diagnosis of fatty breast tissue. In this paper we perform breast cancer detection based on thermography, using a series of statistical features extracted from the thermograms coupled with a fuzzy rule-based classification system for diagnosis. The features stem from a comparison of left and right breast areas and quantify the bilateral differences encountered. Following this asymmetry analysis the features are fed to a fuzzy classification system. This classifier is used to extract fuzzy if-then rules based on a training set of known cases. Experimental results on a set of nearly 150 cases show the proposed system to work well accurately classifying about 80% of cases, a performance that is comparable to other imaging modalities such as mammography.

Short-term load forecasting has become increasingly important since the rise of the competitive energy markets and has become one of the major areas of research in recent years. Toward to this important topic, this paper proposes a new approach- the self-organizing fuzzy neural network (SOFNN) modeling method for the short-term load forecasting. The main advantages of this approach are that, firstly, it is very user friendly as SOFNN can automatically determine the model structure and identify the model parameters without requiring the in-depth knowledge about fuzzy systems and neural networks; secondly, it provides the excellent forecasting accuracy. Applying this approach based on the real data, the achieved average mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) for load forecasting is less than 1%.

In daily life, humans must compensate for the resultant forces arising from interaction with the physical environment. Recent studies have shown that humans can acquire a neural representation of the relation between motor command and movement, i.e. learn an internal model of the environment dynamics. The present paper discusses the feedforward adaptation under a varying dynamical environment during reaching movements. Subjects first learned reaching movements in a position-dependent divergent force field (DF) and velocity-dependent force field (VF), and then in a switched force field SF1 (DFrarrVF) and SF2 (VFrarrDF). The experimental results show that the adaptation to the switched force fields has been achieved by combining the internal model-based control and the impedance control in a feedforward manner.

In recent years, the amount of Internet accessible digital audiovisual media files has vastly increased. Therefore the need to describe the media (by way of metadata) has also increased significantly. MPEG-7 (finalized in 2001) provides a comprehensive and rich metadata standard for the description of multimedia content. Unfortunately, a standardized query format does not exist for MPEG-7, or other multimedia metadata. Such a standard would provide for communications between querying clients and databases, supporting cross-modal and cross-media retrieval. The lSO/lEC SC29WG11 committee decided therefore to contribute to this application space by adding such functionality as a new part of the MPEG-7 series of standards. In response to a Call for Proposals, six proposals were submitted. This paper describes the strengths of each proposal as well as the resulting draft standard for the MPEG-7 query format.

Graph layout techniques have been developed for many years, there is a few applying to real world applications. This paper presents an application of applying graph layout techniques in Web information visualization and navigation. Most Web browsers, including Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer, cannot give users a visual "map" to guide their Web journey. An approach of using a graph for Web navigation has been proposed. That is to look at the whole of cyberspace as one huge graph. To explore this huge graph, it is critical to find an effective method of tracking a sequence of subsets (Web sub-graphs) of the huge graph based on the user's focus. Any on-line Web sub-graph should fit in the display window. To enhance the display of a Web sub-graph, there should not be any overlaps between node images in the Web sub-graph.
