Healthcare professionals working in highly dynamic hospital environments typically have correspondingly dynamic schedules that are difficult to manage. Emergent tasks and shifting priorities result in existing schedules becoming obsolete. Pervasive computing technology can aid Healthcare professionals in organising daily activities by exploiting knowledge of planned and emerging tasks, of patients and colleagues, and of the general state of the working environment. The Hermes software framework at Trinity College Dublin supports the development of mobile applications for human activity management that exploits such environmental knowledge. Supported applications are based on the concept of a trail. This paper describes the Hermes framework and illustrates how it can be used to implement applications that can automatically reorganise the schedules of healthcare workers based on sensed changes in their environment

Information systems Development Methodologies (ISDMs) are central to the information systems development process, directing and focusing the work of IS practitioners and project leaders. Given the espoused importance of ISDMs, there is surprisingly little evidence of rigorous, industry-based research into practice-in-use or into the development of methodology adaptation guidelines for practitioners. In this article, we develop a framework for future research, intended to stimulate and guide investigations into an ISDM that is used globally. Building upon a review of existing IS literature on ISDM usage, a fresh research direction is proposed, adopting a socio-technical perspective with an emphasis on process-oriented research. The paper suggests that individuals and the work context are important factors affecting the use of ISDMs by IS practitioners. These factors are incorporated into the framework through the combination of the process of technology appropriation with a practice-oriented approach. The paper fills a gap in the literature by proposing an in-depth, multi-method, investigation of the practices adopted by a leading global IT company, collecting a large pool of data and with analysis underpinned by a strong conceptual framework. The paper argues the importance of studies of the method adaptation process involving real projects and real developers working on real problems.

In all short-medium term business/market forecasts, the efficient provision of digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) services in mobile systems appears to be of key importance for mobile operators and broadcasters. Several DMB systems are being developed around the world, with several proposed competing standards. In this framework, the DVB (digital video broadcasting) forum is working to define a new air interface, identified as DVB-SSP, to deliver satellite services to portable devices, and several possibilities are being considered as viable options, including the use of DVB-H (handheld). A critical factor to be considered is the resilience to non linear distortion effects. In fact, DVB-H signals are obtained through an OFDM modulation, which traditionally was considered unfit for satellite communications. Recently (S. Cioni et al., 2005), it has been proved that the adoption of strong channel coding techniques in conjunction with the use of non-linear distortion compensation techniques can lead to good OFDM performance even when operating close to amplifier saturation. Following this avenue, this paper investigates the adaptation of the DVB-H physical layer to the satellite environment, and validates the improved robustness of the proposed scheme to non linear distortion
Most traditional Information Retrieval (IR) systems, including web search engines, operationalize "relevant" as the word frequency in a document of a set of keywords. Because of this limitation, traditional ...

Naive Bayes classifiers are a very simple, but often effective tool for classification problems, although they are based on independence assumptions that do not hold in most cases. Extended naive Bayes classifiers also rely on independence assumptions, but break them down to artificial subclasses, in this way becoming more powerful than ordinary naive Bayes classifiers. Since the involved computations for Bayes classifiers are basically generalised mean value calculations, they easily render themselves to incremental and online learning. However, for the extended naive Bayes classifiers it is necessary, to choose and construct the subclasses, a problem whose answer is not obvious, especially in the case of online learning. In this paper we propose an evolving extended naive Bayes classifier that can learn and evolve in an online manner

In recent years, the modeling and analysis techniques developed in the area of formal languages and of concurrent process calculi have been successfully applied to the field of systems biology. In this setting, brane calculi and membrane systems are two of the most prominent approaches for the modeling of the behaviour of biological membranes. Membrane systems have been introduced by Gh. Paun as a class of distributed parallel computing devices of a biochemical type, while brane calculi are a family of process calculi, based on a set of biologically inspired primitives of membrane interaction. In this paper we model the behaviour of a biological process - namely, the LDL cholesterol degradation pathway - in both brane calculi and membrane systems. We also provide a brief discussion on the application of analysis techniques to this case study

Robotic systems are developed to execute tasks with several types of risks associated. The possible damages that can affect both the working environment and the self-system lead us to consider that these systems are safety critical, i.e., systems where the strict management of safety aspects is vital. In this work, we introduce our proposal for the consideration of safety related requirements and their consequent trace to the desired final system architecture. For this reason, this paper gives a procedure for the identification and specification of safety requirements based on a goal oriented framework. Moreover, in this work other approaches have been considered and integrated to deal with well known safety standard recommendations. By means of an industrial case study, we show how this proposal can be used to consider safety requirements in tele-operated robotic systems and, by extrapolation, in other critical domains
