One aspect of rational behavior is that agents can pursue multiple goals in parallel. Current BDI theory and systems do not provide a theoretical or architectural framework for deciding how goals interact and how an agent can decide which goals to pursue. Instead, they assume for simplicity reasons that agents always pursue consistent goal sets. By omitting this important aspect of rationality, the problem of goal deliberation is shifted from the architecture to the agent programming level and needs to be handled by the agent developer in an error-prone ad-hoc manner. In this paper a goal deliberation strategy called Easy Deliberation is proposed allowing agent developers to specify the relationships between goals in an easy and intuitive manner. It is based on established concepts from goal modeling as can be found in agent methodologies like Tropos and requirements engineering techniques like KAOS. The Easy Deliberation strategy has been realized within the Jadex BDI reasoning engine and is further explained by an example application. To fortify the practical usefulness of the approach it is experimentally shown that the computational cost for deliberation is acceptable and only increases polynomially with the number of concurrent goals. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

In the time and frequency transfer and dissemination field, it is important to provide cost effective remote frequency calibration services with an uncertainty of around 10-12 for end users. It is also required to develop ultra precise transfer methods with an order of 10-15 or better uncertainty for the comparison between ultra stable frequency standards which are under developing. This study shows two methods using optical fiber networks to satisfy these demands. First, it is an economical remote calibration method using existing synchronous optical fiber communication networks. The measured frequency stability (the Allan deviation) of the transmission clock is 2×10-13 for an averaging time of one day. The result indicates the method is promising for the simple remote frequency calibration service. Second, it is an ultra precise two-way optical fiber time and frequency transfer method using a newly proposed bi-directional optical amplifier. In this method, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) signals are transmitted along a single optical fiber. The preliminary measured frequency stability is less than 10 -15 (t=104 s) for a 100-km-long fiber with the bi-directional amplifier. It suggests that the method has capability for improving International Atomic Time (TAI) and Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) comprise computer nodes which communicate over wireless links without any central control. Therefore, they must be able to make fully autonomous security decisions. This introduces new security challenges that existing security models and mechanisms do not adequately address [3]. In this paper we present a trust-based security system that deals with the specific challenges of MANETs by combining decentralised security management and context-aware computing. With this combination, our trust-based security system can establish appropriate trust levels for every situation. © 2005 IEEE.

Web processes are next generation workflows on the web, created using Web services. In this paper we demonstrate the METEOR-S Configuration and Execution Environment (MCEE) system. It will illustrate the capabilities of the system to a) Discover partners b) Optimize partner selection using constraint analysis, c) Perform interaction protocol and data mediation. CSFS: A Java enabled network file storage system

The CSFS (cryptographic storage file system) is a network file storage system that is suitable for a small-to-medium sized networks such as a campus network. In a CSFS, a lot of distributed file servers are organized in a star-liked architecture. File names are stored in a name server and file data are stored in distributed file servers. A CSFS has good scalability and is able to accommodate hundreds of file servers. We implemented a CSFS in pure Java and tested the system with a benchmark. The test results show that CSFS delivers acceptable performance for general file operations. Its performance of file upload and download is as efficient as FTP. It can support more than 450 concurrent online users. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A role paradigm conformance model (RPCM) called Typehole model was developed and implemented in Java. It does not use Is-role-of inheritance and is free from the object schizophrenia (OS) problem (OSP). An extended distributed role model provides multifarious role hierarchies at different sites. Modeling object role systems is prone to OSP. OSP is the error in the RPCM design to subscribe to the viewpoints in the client space. OS and OSP are contrasted. A classification of OSPs is made. Role modeling problem is the requirement to design an OSP-free RPCM with Is-role-of inheritance. The existing object-oriented role models have been evaluated as regards OSP. No role model has strong claims as regards solving the role modeling problem. A security model was developed for RPCM-based distributed object systems and implemented on CORBA. By designing message filter hierarchies, hybrid security is developed at global and local levels for RPCM-based object systems. Role is either abstract or concrete as it can be a type or an instance. A comparative study between Java and Avaj, a concurrent programming language, is presented. java uses wait (), notify (), and notifyAll () construct to support monitors, while Avaj simply supports the construct await (B), where B is any Boolean expression. The syntax for the Avaj abort () construct is simple and allows programmer to call abort () inside any method. Avaj also incorporates the selective communication construct in the language. The invariant (B) construct in Avaj allows a Boolean expression to be invariant in a program.

With the advent of Grid and application technologies, scientists and engineers are building more and more complex applications to manage and process large data sets, and execute scientific experiments on distributed resources. Such application scenarios require means for composing and executing complex workflows. Therefore, many efforts have been made towards the development of workflow management systems for Grid computing. In this paper, we propose a taxonomy that characterizes and classifies various approaches for building and executing workflows on Grids. We also survey several representative Grid workflow systems developed by various projects world-wide to demonstrate the comprehensiveness of the taxonomy. The taxonomy not only highlights the design and engineering similarities and differences of state-of-the-art in Grid workflow systems, but also identifies the areas that need further research. © Springer science+Business Media, Inc. 2006.

YBa₂Cu₃O_7-δ thick films have been deposited onto Ag substrates by the Electrophoretic Deposition (EPD) technique. Different microstructures and electrical behaviours were observed depending on the starting powder. Coatings prepared from commercial powder displayed significant porosity and the superconducting transition width was found to be magnetic-field dependent. Films produced from home-made coprecipitated powder are denser but contain some secondary phases. No dependence of the resistive transition as a function of magnetic field (H 20 Oe) was observed in that case. © 2006 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Discovering and composing individual Web services into more complex yet new and more useful Web processes is an important challenge. In this paper, we present three techniques for (semi) automatically composing Web services into Web processes by using their ontological descriptions and relationships to other services. In Interface-Matching Automatic composition technique, the possible compositions are obtained by checking semantic similarities between interfaces of individual services. Then these compositions are ranked considering their Quality of Services (QoS) and an optimum composition is selected. In Human-Assisted composition the user selects a service from a ranked list at certain stages. We also address automatic compositions in a Peer-to-Peer network. © Springer-Verlag Berlin 2005.
