The Generalized Temporal Role-Based Access Control (GTRBAC) model provides a comprehensive set of temporal constraint expressions which can facilitate the specification of fine-grained time-based access control policies. However, the issue of the expressiveness and usability of this model has not been previously investigated. In this paper, we present an analysis of the expressiveness of the constructs provided by this model and illustrate that its constraints-set is not minimal. We show that there is a subset of GTRBAC constraints that is sufficient to express all the access constraints that can be expressed using the full set. We also illustrate that a nonminimal GTRBAC constraint set can provide better flexibility and lower complexity of constraint representation. Based on our analysis, a set of design guidelines for the development of GTRBAC-based security administration is presented. © 2005 IEEE.

For symbol timing recovery in digital receivers, a modified form of the Gardner detector is introduced. If applied a tracking loops for M-PSK modulated signals shaped as raised cosines, it is shown that the suggested synchronizer achieves a definitely better jitter performance (Gaussian and self-noise domain) than the original proposed by Gardner. In particular, this turns out to be true for baseband shapes with small roll-off factors as it is required for bandwidth-efficient systems

In a paper recently published in the IEEE transaction on consumer electronics, Das, Saxena, and Gulati proposed a dynamic ID-based remote user authentication scheme using smart cards that allows the users to choose and change their passwords freely, and does not maintain any verifier table. It can protect against ID-theft, replaying, forgery, guessing, insider, and stolen verifier attacks. However, this paper shows that Das, Saxena, and Gulati's scheme has some attacks. Therefore, we propose a slight modification to their scheme to improve their weaknesses. As a result, the improved scheme can enhance the security of Das, Saxena, and Gulati's scheme. In addition, the proposed scheme does not add many computational costs additionally. Compare with their scheme, our scheme is also efficient.

Engineering a large software project involves tracking the impact of development and maintenance changes on the software performance. An approach for tracking the impact is regression benchmarking, which involves automated benchmarking and evaluation of performance at regular intervals. Regression benchmarking must tackle the nondeterminism inherent to contemporary computer systems and execution environments and the impact of the nondeterminism on the results. On the example of a fully automated regression benchmarking environment for the mono open-source project, we show how the problems associated with nondeterminism can be tackled using statistical methods.

Program affordability needs to be built-in at the initial concept formulation stage. For NASA's space exploration vision this is critical for long range sustainability of human presence in space. What is often overlooked in the initial concept formulation of a large scale system endeavor such as NASA's Constellation program is the hidden cost of maintaining requisite operational safety margins and redundancy through adequate supply chain logistics. Ensuring adequate supply chain logistics necessitates the integration of operations and maintenance cycles. What enables this integration is the coordination and reconciliation across multiple equipment types of system health features and logistical information such as: (1) prognostic drivers from Integrated Vehicle Health Monitoring (IVHM) systems producing proactive condition-based "maintain me" demands, (2) maintenance management systems tracking usage and producing scheduled maintenance demands, (3) unscheduled maintenance demands resulting from any trouble reports entered by human observers of conditions missed by the IVHM system, and (4) implicit maintenance demands resulting from mission plans which require assignment of vehicular/robotic assets and consequently require assurance of the assigned assets' fitness for the intended tasks. In this paper we discuss how Coordinated Multi-source Maintenance on Demand (CMMD) technology, which is being is transitioned to the USMC Coherent Analytical Computing Environment (CACE) program and the Joint Strike Fighter Program, can be applied to the NASA domain, and its benefits in terms of mission affordability, operations efficiency and system health effectiveness. Using concepts derived from CMMD, we discuss the kind of IVHM capabilities needed to optimize multiple, parallel, yet inter-linked, operations-maintenance cycles, thereby optimizing program affordability while meeting specific mission supportability requirements across a broad range of mission scenarios.

To provide statistical service guarantee and achieve high network utilization, measurement-based admission control (MBAC) has been studied for over one decade. Many MBAC algorithms have been proposed in the literature. However, most of them belong to aggregate MBAC algorithms which assume or require that (1) first-in-first-out (FIFO) is used for aggregating flows; (2) statistical service guarantees are provided to the aggregate of admitted flows; (3) each flow requires and experiences the same statistical service guarantees as the aggregate. In this paper, we focus on per-flow MBAC that aims to provide possibly different statistical service guarantees to individual flows in an aggregate. Particularly, we propose a simple per-flow MBAC algorithm in which dynamic priority scheduling (DPS) is adopted to aggregate flows. With this DPS-based per-flow MBAC algorithm, a newly admitted flow is always given a lower priority level than all existing flows, and its priority level is improved if an existing flow leaves the system. Consequently, once a flow is admitted, its received service will not be adversely affected by other flows admitted after it. Because of this, there is no need to re-check or adjust network resources allocated to existing flows due to the admission of a new flow.

Recently there has been noticeable interest in the fabrication and study of ZnO films for a variety of electrical and optical devices. Reports indicate that the electrical properties of undoped ZnO thin films can be controlled by changing the growth parameters as stated in Ji Nan Zeng et al. The increased need for people and organizations to continue collaborating whilst changing physical location and crossing organizational boundaries has resulted in a wave of new supporting technologies, and generated interest in tackling some of the difficult research issues arsing in such a context. The latter was the subject of the Third IEEE International Workshop on distributed and Mobile Collaboration (DMC) at WETICE 2005, summirized here. The DMC Workshop included 10 full papers on topics grouped into four areas: Web-based collaboration, Formal description and consistency checking of collaborative processes, Models and architectures for collaborative services, and P2P collaborative infrastructures. The discussions at the workshop outlined several important issues regarding the field of distributed collaborative applications.

Broadcast networks are typically used for distributing common information (music, data) to many users within a given service area, while cellular networks provide point-to-point voice or data delivery to individual users. The fundamental difference from an economic point of view is that cellular networks follow a 'pay-per-use' paradigm with 'per minute' or 'per kbyte' charges, whereas commercial broadcast services (e.g. pay-TV) are charged for by long-term (months or years) subscriptions. In this paper, we investigate a hybrid system for carrying traffic information services. It comprises a data broadcast network for providing the base capacity and a cellular network for carrying the peak traffic exceeding this base capacity. Cellular capacity for the excess data traffic can be purchased whenever needed. However, capacity in broadcast networks is typically leased for long periods of time (potentially several years) at a fixed price. The key problem is how to choose depending on the statistic properties of the input data traffic - the fixed broadcast capacity such that the overall operation cost for the hybrid network is minimized. Results for a telematics service delivering traffic information show that indeed considerable cost savings can be achieved by carefully balancing the capacity allocated in the broadcast network against the peak traffic redirected through the cellular network. The simple analytical model proposed to aid in this tradeoff is validated by simulations.
