The paper introduces the concept of regression benchmarking as a variant of regression testing focused at detecting performance regressions. Applying the regression benchmarking in the area of middleware development, the paper explains how regression benchmarking differs from middleware benchmarking in general. On a real-world example of TAO, the paper shows why the existing benchmarks do not give results sufficient for regression benchmarking, and proposes techniques for detecting performance regressions using simple benchmarks.

Adaptivity is a key issue for enhanced multimedia communication in wireless environments, where the network QoS for a whole session cannot be guaranteed. Within this paper we propose a set of mechanisms to provide adaptive multimedia multi-party communication according to user-defined QoS levels over self-organizing ad hoc network extensions connected to IP access networks. We use special extensions to SIP/SDPng based on XML to negotiate alternative application defined QoS levels and adaptation paths and optionally couple local resource management with network layer QoS. At the network layer, we propose the MMARP (Multicast MANET Routing Protocol) which provides efficient multicast communications within ad hoc network extension to public infrastructure based access networks. MMARP is able to deal with the complexity of supporting traditional IP nodes whilst inter-operating smoothly with fixed IP networks. An adaptive application architecture is demonstrated that uses the E2ENP and allows multimedia applications to reconfigure themselves in realtime to match the specific network conditions in order to preserve the user-perceived QoS. Thus, an integration of application layer QoS as defined by the user and network layer QoS is achieved.

In this paper, we study how to collect n balls moving with constant velocities in the Euclidean plane by k robots moving on straight track-lines through the origin. Since all the balls might not be caught by robots, differently from Moving-Target TSP, we consider the following 3 problems in various situations: (i) deciding if k robots can collect all n balls, (ii) maximizing the number of the balls collected by k robots, and (iii) minimizing the number of the robots to collect all n balls. The situations considered here contain the cases in which track-lines are given (or not), and track-lines are identical (or not). For all problems and situations, we provide polynomial time algorithms or proofs of intractability, which clarify the tractability-intractability frontier in the ball collecting problems in the Euclidean plane.

In an Ethernet passive optical network (EPON), all optical network units (ONUs) share one uplink channel to transmit multiple traffic. To avoid data collision, a contention-free MAC protocol is needed to schedule the transmission order of different ONUs. An available solution is to assign a variable-sized time slot to each ONU. In this paper, we first review some existing bandwidth allocation schemes for EPON in the literature. Then we propose a novel scheme called dynamic weight priority scheduling (DWPS), which not only guarantees all the ONUs that fairly share the bandwidth of uplink channel on demand, but also supports differentiated services. The tradeoff between the throughput and the blocking probability of various code assignment schemes for OVSF-CDMA (orthogonal variable spreading factor CDMA) systems is investigated, and the optimal fixed and dynamic code assignment schemes that maximize the average data throughput under a blocking probability constraint are proposed. The optimal schemes are obtained using constrained optimization through the Markov decision process and linear programming. The performance of each scheme is numerically evaluated. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed new schemes can achieve a satisfactory balance between the average throughput and the blocking probability.

Compared to the regular documents, the major distinguishing characteristics of the Web documents are the dynamic hyper-structure. Thus, in addition to terms or keywords for regular document clustering, Web document clustering can incorporate some dynamic information such as the hyperlinks and the access patterns extracted from the user query logs. In this paper, we extend the concept of document clustering into Web document clustering by introducing the strategy of affinity-based similarity measure, which utilizes the user access patterns in determining the similarities among Web documents via a probabilistic model. Several comparison experiments are conducted using a real data set and the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed similarity measure outperforms the cosine coefficient and the Euclidean distance method under different document clustering algorithms.

When the cells in a location area are paged sequentially, based on specific information, such as last registered area or mobile speed, the paging load may be non-uniformly distributed among the cells. This non-uniform paging traffic causes additional paging delay due to the increasing waiting time in cells that have a high paging load. We introduce a new partitioning strategy in which the paging sequence in a location area is optimized according to both the location probability of a mobile terminal and the paging load distribution among the cells. Numerical results show that our proposed strategy performs almost equivalently to the optimal one and outperforms the conventional paging scheme with respect to paging delay.

This paper presents an overview of our project on an augmented desk interface system called the EnhancedDesk. The EnhancedDesk is equipped with an infrared camera for tracking a users' hand motions, a color video camera for recognizing objects, and projectors for displaying various kinds of digital information onto the desk. The key technical innovations of the EnhancedDesk include: fast and accurate tracking of multiple fingers for direct manipulation of both real and projected objects with bare hands, interactive object registration and recognition with hand gestures, vision-based tracking of a user's gaze, and addition of interactive functionality overlaid on the desk. This paper presents a brief description of the components, as well as some prototypes of applications of our augmented desk interface system.

Research on humanoid robots has produced various uses for their body properties in communication. In particular, mutual relationships of body movements between a robot and a human are considered to be important for smooth and natural communication, as they are in human-human communication. We have developed a semi-autonomous humanoid robot system that is capable of cooperative body movements with humans using environment-based sensors and switching communicative units. And we conducted an experiment using this robot system and verified the importance of cooperative behaviors in a route-guidance situation where a human gives directions to the robot. This result indicates that the cooperative body movements greatly enhance the emotional impressions of human in a route-guidance situation. We believe these results allow us to develop interactive humanoid robots that sociably communicate with humans.
