Presents an enhancement to the OSF DCE platform for distributed computing that is designed to enhance the interoperability of applications. Concepts from open distributed processing (ODP) have been taken, extended and applied to DCE, to improve the capacity for late binding, system evolution, resource discovery and software reusability. This paper analyzes approaches to application interoperability in a number of distributed computing platforms and based on the results, describes an enhancement for the DCE platform. The paper focuses on one component of this enhancement: a type manager that is able to canonically describe types of interacting objects and types of relationships between them.< >

The development of a cooperative user interface is a vital and interesting issue due to the lack of common access and limited sharing of data among applications. In this paper, we propose a new design framework which can be used as a platform to access and integrate applications in a cooperative manner. In particular, the paper describes how applications can be integrated by using an object-oriented database approach. With this approach, the mapping between the application input/output streams and the database objects promotes the transparency of information transfer among applications.

In this paper the problem of automated control of a road vehicle is addressed. In particular, a system is presented where optical flow techniques are applied to monitor overtaking maneuvers of other vehicles coming from the rear of the car. During car driving, most visual information is conveyed by the motion perceived within the visual field. The proposed approach for overtaking control is based on the computation of the optical flow (or the normal flow) from an image stream acquired from a camera sensor mounted on board of the vehicle. The method applies for a road vehicle and constitutes a building block of a software and hardware architecture devised to provide helpful information as an aid to the driver. PID control schemes based on classical control theory, have been widely used for real control systems. Further, there are a lot of researches on control schemes of tuning PID gains. Also several self-tuning and autotuning techniques in the PID control systems have been reported for systems with unknown parameters. However, to the best of our knowledge, there is no result for discrete-time systems with unknown time-delays. On the other hand, a generalized predictive control scheme has been reported as a useful self-tuning control technique for unknown time-delay systems. In this paper, we present a self-tuning PID control algorithm for unknown time-delay systems based on minimization of a GPC criterion. Furthermore, we illustrate a numerical simulation result in order to show the effectiveness of this method.

Two different approaches are here presented for converting speech into graphic animation, suitable to lipreading. Coarticulation modeling has been taken into account by means of an original algorithm for multistep statistical processing of digital speech in the cepstrum space. Two different visualization methods have been used, the first based on key reference pictures and the second based on a parametric flexible structure. Speech is converted, in real-time, into lipreadable visual animation by associating incoming acoustic frames with correspondent consistent graphic primitives, pictures or parameters, suitably visualized. Multiple fields of application are foreseen, mainly in rehabilitation, training, education and communication among hard of hearing people.< >

The distinctive features are the integration of a "classical" planning approach and subsumption architecture for obstacle avoidance, and the fusion of visual and ultrasonic sensory data. The use of communication satellites as a possible way of offering broadband island interconnectivity appears to be a very attractive option, as it will enable the provision of an all-digital, transparent service to a number of ATM islands spanning a wide area, accommodating efficiently a variety of traffic demands. The CATALYST Project (RACE II/R2074) is an attempt to demonstrate the applicability and compatibility of satellite technology with the terrestrial BISDN. In this paper we present an overview of the project and focus on an initial study of the expected user performance through the CATALYST network. Our analysis is based upon mathematical and simulation models and describes the end-system to end-system transfer delay for given message lengths. The protocol profiles assume a mix of Novell NetWare and Network File System client/server architectures, which are supported by either the IEEE 802.3/Ethernet or fibre distributed data interface LANs, which are themselves linked via LAN/ATM/satellite interface units. Areas of further investigation, and the implication of our analysis on the actual network architecture, are discussed.
