Hybrid deep neural network hidden Markov models (DNN-HMM) have achieved impressive results on large vocabulary continuous speech recognition (LVCSR) tasks. However, the recent approaches using DNN-HMM models are not explored much for text recognition. Inspired by the current work in automatic speech recognition (ASR) and machine translation, we present an open vocabulary sub-word text recognition system. The sub-word lexicon and sub-word language model (LM) helps in overcoming the challenge of recognizing out of vocabulary (OOV) words, and a time delay neural network (TDNN) and convolution neural network (CNN) based DNN-HMM optical model (OM) efficiently models the sequence dependency in the line image. We present results on 12 datasets with training data varying from 6k lines to 600k lines. The system is built for 8 languages, i.e., English, French, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Tamil, Russian, and Korean. We report competitive results on several commonly used handwritten and printed text datasets. © 2019 IEEE.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

This workshop summary on natural language processing (NLP) markers for psychosis and other psychiatric disorders presents some of the clinical and research issues that NLP markers might address and some of the activities needed to move in that direction. We propose that the optimal development of NLP markers would occur in the context of research efforts to map out the underlying mechanisms of psychosis and other disorders. In this workshop, we identified some of the challenges to be addressed in developing and implementing NLP markers-based Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSSs) in psychiatric practice, especially with respect to psychosis. Of note, a CDSS is meant to enhance decision-making by clinicians by providing additional relevant information primarily through software (although CDSSs are not without risks). In psychiatry, a field that relies on subjective clinical ratings that condense rich temporal behavioral information, the inclusion of computational quantitative NLP markers can plausibly lead to operationalized decision models in place of idiosyncratic ones, although ethical issues must always be paramount.

Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI) is the intentional destruction of body tissue without the intent to die. NSSI is particularly prevalent among adolescents and young adults as a means of emotional regulation. With the proliferation of social media, NSSI content is frequently being posted, viewed, and shared on popular social media platforms, which may increase social contagion among adolescents. To address this problem, this work first quantifies the prevalence of NSSI content on social media. We develop a content crawler that searches for posts, images, and videos with NSSI-related hashtags (e.g., #selfharm), downloads NSSI content from target social media platforms, and stores them in cloud storage. We then perform a trend analysis, which confirms a steep increase in NSSI posts on social media. Moreover, this work develops an image classifier to identify NSSI or non-NSSI images from social media content. Our classifier is based on the idea of weakly supervised object localization. We evaluate our NSSI classifier with more than 30K labeled NSSI images collected from social media. In our evaluation, our classifier accurately identifies NSSI images with 94% accuracy, and it outperforms state-of-the-art pre-trained models. An accurate NSSI image classifier is an essential first step to enable us and/or social media providers to protect adolescents and young adults from social contagion due to NSSI exposure through such actions as legitimate filtering mechanisms.

Cheating behaviour is one of the problems in the education field during an online exam. In this paper, anti-cheating system is proposed to enhance learning environment of various educational institutions. The appearances and potential ways of cheating are analyzed during the exam process. A novel anti-cheating system is proposed to prevent illegal access based on these two points. It is heavily based on face movement recognition technique. Simulation results of the suggested detection scheme demonstrate that our system possesses outstanding rate of detection with low false alarms rate.

The present global situation of COVID-19 pandemic has broke through regional, revolutionary, philosophical, spiritual, social, and educational barriers. By utilizing an interconnection of network, an Internet of Things enabled medical system is useful for regular monitoring of COVID-19 patients. It also aids in improving patient experience and reducing re-hospitalizations. The arrival of the IoT has effect on reducing healthcare costs and enhancing the treatment outcome of affected patients. As a result, the goal of this study is to analyze and emphasize the overall applicability of the well-established IoT concept by providing a conceptual outlay to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

Scientific discoveries often hinge on synthesizing decades of research, a task that potentially outstrips human information processing capacities. Large language models (LLMs) offer a solution. LLMs trained on the vast scientific literature could potentially integrate noisy yet interrelated findings to forecast novel results better than human experts. To evaluate this possibility, we created BrainBench, a forward-looking benchmark for predicting neuroscience results. We find that LLMs surpass experts in predicting experimental outcomes. BrainGPT, an LLM we tuned on the neuroscience literature, performed better yet. Like human experts, when LLMs were confident in their predictions, they were more likely to be correct, which presages a future where humans and LLMs team together to make discoveries. Our approach is not neuroscience-specific and is transferable to other knowledge-intensive endeavors. © 2024, CC BY.

Objective: Hospital-to-home (H2H) transitions challenge families of children with medical complexity (CMC) and healthcare professionals (HCP). This study aimed to gain deeper insights into the H2H transition process and to work towards eHealth interventions for its improvement, by applying an iterative methodology involving both CMC families and HCP as end-users. Methods: For 20-weeks, the Dutch Transitional Care Unit consortium collaborated with the Amsterdam University of Applied sciences, HCP, and CMC families. The agile SCREAM approach was used, merging Design Thinking methods into five iterative sprints to stimulate creativity, ideation, and design. Continuous communication allowed rapid adaptation to new information and the refinement of solutions for subsequent sprints. Results: This iterative process revealed three domains of care – care coordination, social wellbeing, and emotional support – that were important to all stakeholders. These domains informed the development of our final prototype, ‘Our Care Team’, an application tailored to meet the H2H transition needs for CMC families and HCP. Conclusion: Complex processes like the H2H transition for CMC families require adaptive interventions that empower all stakeholders in their respective roles, to promote transitional care that is anticipatory, rather than reactive. Innovation: A collaborative methodology is needed, that optimizes existing resources and knowledge, fosters innovation through collaboration while using creative digital design principles. This way, we might be able to design eHealth solutions with end-users, not just for them. © 2024 The Authors
