Peer Ratings and Social Problem-solving Skills of 6-8 Years Old Children

For the study Faizabad regions of state Uttar Pradesh were selected as locales. Faizabad region included districts namely-Faizabad, Barabanki, Sultanpur, Ambedkar Nagar and Gonda. Four Schools and hundred children from each district were selected. Hence a total of 500 primary school children were assessed for peer acceptance and rejection and interpersonal social problem-solving skills. Result of this study showed the relationship between peer acceptance and rejection and interpersonal social problem-solving skills. Positively rated children suggested more number of relevant strategies and flexibility than their less accepted counter parts. Also positively rated children were more likely to suggest prosocial strategies for obtaining access to an object in another child’s possession, while reverse was seen among negatively rated children.

In this work, we report the outcomes from the IUPUI STEM outreach program “STEMCorp” that inspires high school students to pursue STEM majors. The STEMCorp program was modeled after the Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Initiative (MURI) at IUPUI. MURI research program introduces undergraduate students from at least two different departments with mentors from different disciplines to address research issues that may compose both engineering and sciences. The STEMCorp program brings undergraduate students to work with faculty and high school teachers to create a positive impact in enriching the high school students by introducing them to engineering and science with emphasis on nanotechnology for future careers. The program describes the collaborative activities between faculty, undergraduate students and high school STEM teachers in the creation of project-based, student-centered learning modules in the field of nanotechnology. The paper details the activities of the STEMCorp participants including their experiences in developing working partnerships and creating and implementing learning modules in the designated high school courses. The success of the program is assessed by the measurable outcomes of high school students' research projects. Specifically, two different learning modules are presented, including the processes used in the development of these modules and their outcomes. The collaborative research discussions between the faculty, undergraduate students, and high school teachers are detailed, covering research methodologies, hypothesis, and expected outcomes.

This paper proposes the improvement of context dependent modeling for Arabic handwriting recognition. Since the number of parameters in context dependent models is huge, CART trees are used for state tying. This work is based on a new set of questions for the CART tree construction based on a "lossy mapping" categorization of the Arabic shapes. The used system is a combination of Hidden Markov Models and Recurrent Neural Networks using the hybrid approach. A comparison between a Neural network trained using the baseline labels and another one based on the CART tree labels is done. The experimental results show that the use of the CART labels for the Neural Network training beneficial. The lossy mapping based CART tree performed better than the baseline system. An absolute improvement of 2.9% in terms of Word Error Rate is performed on the test set of the Open Hart database.

This paper describes the new release of RASR - the open source version of the well-proven speech recognition toolkit developed and used at RWTH Aachen University. The focus is put on the implementation of the NN module for training neural network acoustic models. We describe code design, configuration, and features of the NN module. The key feature is a high flexibility regarding the network topology, choice of activation functions, training criteria, and optimization algorithm, as well as a built-in support for efficient GPU computing. The evaluation of run-time performance and recognition accuracy is performed exemplary with a deep neural network as acoustic model in a hybrid NN/HMM system. The results show that RASR achieves a state-of-the-art performance on a real-world large vocabulary task, while offering a complete pipeline for building and applying large scale speech recognition systems.

We propose an approach for acoustic modeling of Hindi speech by borrowing from English data, for the purpose of Hindi LVCSR. Hindi, like many Indian languages, has a significant speaker base but there have not been a lot of resources to obtain large amounts of transcribed Hindi data for LVCSR. We compare a baseline Gaussian model-sharing approach with DNN training. A widely used data-borrowing method with DNN is to firstly train a DNN with English, for which a large amount of training data is available;then the whole DNN, except the last layer, is fine-tuned by using the target Hindi data. We propose to do phonetic mapping between Hindi and English in the first stage, training Hindi acoustic models by sharing data between Hindi-English phone pairs in the second stage, and finally fine-tuning the acoustic model by using the Hindi data. We evaluate and compare these approaches with experiments using 1 hour of transcribed Hindi data and 15 hours of Wall Street Journal English data. Experiments show that the proposed method significantly outperforms conventional baseline models in a low-resource setting for phone recognition tasks.

We have developed a system, called INSPIRED - Intelligent System for a Personalized Cancer Diet to improve the health and quality of life for obese patients with cancer. It is designed for monitoring, alerting, reminding and evaluation of patients as well as storage, access and retrieval of medical and personal data for establishing treatment. Our system provides users (patients or physicians) with personalized dietary plans, rehabilitation and lifestyle information, all tailored to each individual's needs. Obese cancer patients are informed of, and educated about, the role of nutrition as a first and best defense in improving survivability and quality of life. The proposed system analyzes patient data such as vital signs (weight, height, Body Mass Index BMI, blood pressure), physical activity, type of cancer, treatment, side effects and uses the patient's profile to build a custom diet that relies on comprehensive care planning. The Cancer Nutrition Personalized Tips System is based on My SQL (Structured Query language) architecture that is user friendly and can be expanded to future needs.

Parkinson's disease is the most common degenerative movement disorder and a progressive nervous system disorder that affects body movement, memory, speaking and daily mental and physical activities. In Romania are over 75.000 Parkinson patients and the government spends over 1.5 million USD with them. Nowadays, there is no screening test for early detection of Parkinson's disease. In this paper is presented a noninvasive low cost health care system for Neurological Disorders Screening and Rehabilitation that can be used by doctors and patients, and also for research purposes. The system can assist the doctors/medical experts in monitoring, screening and rehabilitation of patients with Parkinson's disease or other Neurological Disorders, leading to an early and efficient diagnosis. From a technical point of view, the system uses the latest and most appropriate methods for medical signals acquisition and processing. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper investigates the application of hierarchical MRASTA bottleneck (BN) features for under-resourced languages within the IARPA Babel project. Through multilingual training of Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) BN features on five languages (Cantonese, Pashto, Tagalog, Turkish, and Vietnamese), we could end up in a single feature stream which is more beneficial to all languages than the unilingual features. In the case of balanced corpus sizes, the multilingual BN features improve the automatic speech recognition (ASR) performance by 3-5% and the keyword search (KWS) by 3-10% relative for both limited (LLP) and full language packs (FLP). Borrowing orders of magnitude more data from non-target FLPs, the recognition error rate is reduced by 8-10%, and the spoken term detection is improved by over 40% relative on Vietnamese and Pashto LLP. Aiming at the fast development of acoustic models, cross-lingual transfer of multilingually "pretrained" BN features for a new language is also investigated. Without the need of any MLP training on the new language, the ported BN features performed similarly to the unilingual features on FLP and significantly better on LLP. Results also show that a simple fine-tuning step on the new language is enough to achieve comparable KWS and ASR performance to that system where the target language is also involved in the time-consuming multilingual training.

There are millions of accounts in Twitter. In this paper, we categorize twitter accounts into two types, namely Personal Communication Account (PCA) and Public Dissemination Account (PDA). PCAs are accounts operated by individuals and are used to express that individual's thoughts and feelings. PDAs, on the other hand, refer to accounts owned by non-individuals such as companies, governments, etc. Generally, Tweets in PDA (i) disseminate a specific type of information (e.g., job openings, shopping deals, car accidents) rather than sharing an individual's personal life;and (ii) may be produced by non-human entities (e.g., bots). We aim to develop techniques for identifying PDAs so as to (i) facilitate social scientists to reduce "noise" in their study of human behaviors, and (ii) to index them for potential recommendation to users looking for specific types of information. Through analysis, we find these two types of accounts follow different temporal, spatial and textual patterns. Accordingly we develop probabilistic models based on these features to identify PDAs. We also conduct a series of experiments to evaluate those algorithms for cleaning the Twitter data stream. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.
