We aim to provide grammar error feedback to learners. It is known that grammar error detection and feedback are challenging problems in written language, however, they become much more difficult tasks in oral conversation because it is difficult for a system to judge whether an error is due to grammar or automatic speech recognition (ASR). False alarms occur when a learner correctly utters a remark, but the system gives feedback implying an error. Minimizing the false alarm rate is especially critical in education applications because it is imperative that the tutor give correct instruction to learners. Thus, to reduce the false alarm rate in grammar error detection and feedback, we apply a partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) when the system provides feedback about a learner's mistake. The POMDP models uncertainty between grammar errors and ASR errors. An additional advantage of our method is that “belief states” in POMDP can be used for learner models which indicate each individual learner's grammar comprehension level.

In this paper, we describe the RWTH speech recognition system for English lectures developed within the Translectures project. A difficulty in the development of an English lectures recognition system, is the high ratio of non-native speakers. We address this problem by using very effective deep bottleneck features trained on multilingual data. The acoustic model is trained on large amounts of data from different domains and with different dialects. Large improvements are obtained from unsupervised acoustic adaptation. Another challenge is the frequent use of technical terms and the wide range of topics. In our recognition system, slides, which are attached to most lectures, are used for improving lexical coverage and language model adaptation.

Parkinson's disease is the most common degenerative movement disorder and a progressive nervous system disorder that affects body movement, memory, speaking and daily mental and physical activities. In Romania are over 75.000 Parkinson patients and the government spends over 1.5 million USD with them. Nowadays, there is no screening test for early detection of Parkinson's disease. In this paper is presented a noninvasive low cost health care system for Neurological Disorders Screening and Rehabilitation that can be used by doctors and patients, and also for research purposes. The system can assist the doctors/medical experts in monitoring, screening and rehabilitation of patients with Parkinson's disease or other Neurological Disorders, leading to an early and efficient diagnosis. From a technical point of view, the system uses the latest and most appropriate methods for medical signals acquisition and processing.

The work described in this paper is part of a research program named ABV (Low Speed Automation) where the goal is the automation of road vehicle at low speed while ensuring the sharing of driving between the driver and the assistance. This paper focuses on the problem of human-machine cooperation in the specific context of vehicle driving, with a view of shared control between driver and automation, considering the acceptability of the system and the driver distractions and drowsiness.

In this paper, we analyse the emotion of children's stories in sentence level by considering the context information. We demonstrate that the emotion of a sentence is not only dependent on its content, but also affected by its neighbours in a story. A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based method is proposed to model the emotion sequence and to detect whether a sentence is neutral or not. We show the important features for emotion detection by studying a children's story corpus. An empirical evaluation is conducted to investigate the efficiency of the model. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve competitive performance with the state-of-the-art methods, and it is affected more slightly by the training set than traditional classification methods. Classifier fusion is applied to combine different methods to achieve better results.

We present a novel approach to learning phrasal inversion transduction grammars via Bayesian MAP (maximum a posteriori) or information-theoretic MDL (minimum description length) model optimization so as to incorporate simultaneously the choices of model structure as well as parameters. In comparison to most current SMT approaches, the model learns phrase translation lexicons that (a) do not require enormous amounts of run-time memory, (b) contain significantly less redundancy, and (c) provide an obvious basis for generalization to abstract translation schemas. Model structure choice is biased by a description length prior, while parameter choice is driven by data likelihood biased by a parameter prior. The search over possible model structures is made feasible by a novel top-down rule segmenting heuristic which efficiently incorporates estimates of the posterior probabilities. Since the priors reward model parsimony, the learned grammar is very concise and still performs significantly better than the maximum likelihood driven bottom-up rule chunking baseline. © IJCNLP *** right reserved.

In this paper, we propose a novel reordering model based on sequence labeling techniques. Our model converts the reordering problem into a sequence labeling problem, i.e. a tagging task. Results on five Chinese-English NIST tasks show that our model improves the baseline system by 1.32 Bleu and 1.53 Ter on average. Results of comparative study with other seven widely used reordering models will also be reported. © 2013 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper we address the problem of solving substitution ciphers using a beam search approach. We present a conceptually consistent and easy to implement method that improves the current state of the art for decipherment of substitution ciphers and is able to use high order n-gram language models. We show experiments with 1:1 substitution ciphers in which the guaranteed optimal solution for 3-gram language models has 38.6% decipherment error, while our approach achieves 4.13% decipherment error in a fraction of time by using a 6-gram language model. We also apply our approach to the famous Zodiac-408 cipher and obtain slightly better (and near to optimal) results than previously published. Unlike the previous state-of-the-art approach that uses additional word lists to evaluate possible decipherments, our approach only uses a letterbased 6-gram language model. Furthermore we use our algorithm to solve large vocabulary substitution ciphers and improve the best published decipherment error rate based on the Gigaword corpus of 7.8% to 6.0% error rate. © 2013 Association for Computational Linguistics.
