A framework is proposed for enterprise automated call routing system development and large scalable natural language call routing application deployment based on IBM's speech recognition and NLU application engagement practices in recently years. To facilitate employing different call classification algorithms in an easy integration manner, this framework architecture provides a plug & play environment for evaluating promising call routing algorithms and a systematic approach to carry out a large scalable enterprise application deployment. The paradigm in this paper illustrates the complementary effort to develop an automatic call routing application for enterprise call centers and covers from call classification algorithm investigation to application programming model. Experimental results on a live data testing set collected from an enterprise call center shows that the performance of the call classification algorithm implemented in this framework is outstanding. © 2003 IEEE.

A novel affect-sensitive human-robot cooperative framework is presented in this paper. Peripheral physiological indices are measured through wearable biofeedback sensors to detect the affective states of the human. Affect recognition is performed through both quantitative and qualitative analyses. A subsumption control architecture that is sensitive to the affective states of the human is proposed for a mobile robot. human-robot cooperation experiments are performed where the robot senses the affective state of the human and responds appropriately. The results presented here validate the proposed framework and demonstrates a new way of achieving implicit communication between a human and a robot.

Despite the national surge in interest in technology fields, student performance measures continue to reveal that many students lack the analytical skills to complete college level courses in math and computer science. The development of tools for the measurement and enhancement of metacognitive skills will be examined. The primary measuring tool, the metacognitive skills inventory, was designed to measure metacognitive abilities. The inventory consists of two subscales: decomposition and confidence. The decomposition subscale measures the subjects ' awareness and reported use of the critical problem solving steps. Examples are problem identification, planning of solution strategies, and comparison of these strategies. The confidence subscale, measures the extent to which subjects are confident in their own problem solving ability. The inventory has been used in studies comparing student grades in college courses, problem solving skills at different levels in various college programs, and student performance on various tests. These tests include the SAT (both verbal and math), the MARS-R math anxiety scales, and the general expectancy of success scale-revised. The MSI is currently being used as an integral component of current research dealing with the development of training and education programs to increase metacognitive skills.

LIVELY graduated from the University of Colorado with a BS in applied mathematics and an MS in mathematics in 1976 and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an MS in electrical engineering and the degree ocean engineer in naval architecture and marine engineering in 1984. He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 after 23 years of service. Assignments included electrical officer on the USS Constellation (CV 64) project engineer for the DDG 51 machinery control system (NAVSEA) and DDG 51 Technical Director (NAVSEA). He was vice president of the PDI Division of Bird-Johnson Company from July 1989 to November 1998 where he managed various gas turbine and machinery controls related development projects. He joined Anteon Corporation's Systems Engineering Group as senior controls engineer in December 1998 where he provided technical support to the integrated power systems program (NAVSEA PMS 510) and managed the Office of Naval Research Afloat Laboratory. DR. MARK KIRKPATRICK is currently an independent consultant in human factors and work-load/manning analysis and modeling. He holds a Ph.D. degree in experimental psychology from The Ohio State University and has 34 years of experience in applied human factors. From 1982 through 2000 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as the senior vice president of Carlow International. Prior to joining Carlow in 1982 Dr. Kirkpatrick served as a member of the technical staff at North American Rockwell's Missiles Division and as a project director and vice president for Essex Corporation. Aboard current ships, such as the DDG 51, engineering control and damage control activities are manpower intensive. It is anticipated that, for future combatants, the workload demand arising from operation of systems under conditions of normal steaming and during casualty response will need to be markedly reduced via automated monitoring, autonomous control, and other technology initiatives. Current DDG 51 class ships can be considered as a manpower baseline and under Condition III typical engineering control involves seven to eight watchstanders at manned stations in the Central Control Station, the engine rooms and other machinery spaces. In contrast to this manning level, initiatives such as DD 21 and the integrated engineering plant (IEP) envision a partnership between the operator and the automation system, with more and more of the operator's functions being shifted to the automation system as manning levels decrease. This paper describes some human systems integration studies of workload demand reduction and, consequently, manning reduction that can be achieved due to application of several advanced technology concepts. Advanced system concept studies in relation to workload demand are described and reviewed including. Piecemeal applications of diverse automation and remote control technology concepts to selected high driver tasks in current DDG 51 activities. development of the reduced ship's crew by virtual presence system that will provide automated monitoring and display to operators of machinery health, compartment conditions, and personnel health. The IEP envisions the machinery control system as a provider of resources that are used by various consumers around the ship. Resource needs and consumer priorities are at all times dependent upon the ship's current mission and the availability of equipment pawnbrokers.

This paper is based on the work carried out in the framework of the Verbmobil project, which is a limited-domain speech translation task (German-English). In the final evaluation, the statistical approach was found to perform best among five competing approaches. In this paper, we will further investigate the used statistical translation models. A shortcoming of the single-word based model is that it does not take contextual information into account for the translation decisions. We will present a translation model that is based on bilingual phrases to explicitly model the local *** will show that this model performs better than the single-word based *** will compare monotone and non-monotone search for this model and we will investigate the benefit of using the sum criterion instead of the maximum approximation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

A protein super-family consists of proteins which share amino acid sequence homology and which may therefore be functionally and structurally related. Traditionally, two protein sequences are classified into the same class if they have high homology in terms of feature patterns extracted through sequence alignment algorithms. As the sizes of the protein sequence databases are very large, it is a very time consuming job to perform exhaustive comparison of existing protein sequence. Therefore, there is a need to build an improved classification system for effectively identifying protein sequences. This paper presents a modular neural classifier for protein sequences with improved classification criteria. The intelligent classification techniques described in the paper aims to enhance the performance of single neural classifiers based on a centralized information structure in terms of recognition rate generalization and reliability. The architecture of the proposed model is a modular RBF neural network with a compensational combination at the transition output layer. The connection weights between the final output layer and the transition output layer are optimized by delta rule, which serve as an integrator of the local neural classifiers. To enhance the classification reliability, we present two heuristic rules to apply to decisionmaking. Two sets of protein sequences with ten classes of superfamilies downloaded from a public domain database, Protein Information Resources (PIR), are used in our simulation study. Experimental results with performance comparisons are carried out between single neural classifiers and the proposed modular neural classifier. © 2002 Nanyang Technological University.

computer literacy is growing in importance for all university students and is especially important for students pursuing technical and engineering courses of study. While an increasing number of today's students enter the university with an adequate level of computer knowledge and skill, there are many who do not. Large numbers of students, especially from economically disadvantaged communities, lack the computer skills necessary to be successful in most engineering programs. Therefore, it is particularly important for universities to offer computer literacy courses to accommodate the needs of such students. In order to ensure the effectiveness of educational programs in computer literacy, assessment must be done on a continuing basis. Such assessment has been difficult due to varying definitions of computer literacy and the lack of tools to adequately assess such programs. This paper describes a pilot study conducted at California State University, Northridge that was done as an experimental attempt to assess the effectiveness of computer literacy courses. The specific instruments used as well as others investigated are discussed, and the methods of conducting the assessment are explained. The results of the pilot study are presented along with recommendation for the development of improved instruments and methods for computer literacy assessment.
