Machine Learning-Based Calibration Approaches for Single-Beam and Multiple-Beam Distance Sensors

Sensors are the foundation to facilitate smart cities, smart grids, and smart transportation, and distance sensors are especially important for sensing the environment and gathering information. Researchers have developed various methods to calibrate distance sensors;however, they mainly focus on using external information for calibration, which is inefficient and computationally expensive. To alleviate the above problems, we propose machine learning (ML)-based calibration approaches for distance sensors. We develop two calibration mechanisms, where the naive mechanism directly predicts the true distance, while the residual mechanism predicts the residual for calibration. The conventional ML regression algorithms are then adopted to predict the true distance or calibration residual. Experimental results show that the designed residual calibration mechanism outperforms the naive mechanism by reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) by 92.2% and mean absolute error (MAE) by 93.3% in the fitting task. In prediction, the proposed 2-D-residual mechanism achieves an improvement of 78.6% and 65.7% compared to the state-of-the-art method. The experimental results show the effectiveness and generalization of the proposed ML-based calibration method, especially for the 2-D mechanism, which achieves the highest robustness in all fitting and prediction tasks. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

In this paper we show how our approach of extending Language Driven Engineering (LDE) with natural language-based code generation supports system migration: The characteristic decomposition of LDE into tasks that are solved with dedicated domain-specific languages divides the migration tasks into portions adequate to apply LLM-based code generation. We illustrate this effect by migrating a low-code/no-code generator for point-and-click adventures from JavaScript to TypeScript in a way that maintains an important property: generated web applications can automatically be validated via automata learning and model analysis by design. In particular, this allows to easily test the correctness of migration by learning the difference automaton for the generated products of the source and the target system of the migration. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This paper presents an approach to no-code development based on the interplay of formally defined (graphical) Domain-Specific Languages and informal, intuitive Natural Language which is enriched with contextual information to enable referencing of formally defined entities. The paper focuses on the use and automated integration of these enriched intuitive languages via ChatGPT-based code generation to exploit the best of both language paradigms for domain-specific application development. To compensate for the lack of control over the intuitive languages we apply automated system-level validation via automata learning and subsequent model checking. Current methods in mapping the availability of WiFi networks, such as crowdsourcing platforms (e.g. Project BASS and CoverageMap) and dedicated wardriving, face limitations in terms of data recency, volume, and cost-effectiveness. Due to the downsides of both these methods, opportunistic wardriving is proposed which utilizes public utility vehicles (PUVs). This study investigates the feasibility of PUVs as potential wardriving vehicles for opportunistic coverage mapping. This method is cost-efficient and removes the problem of data recency because of its continuous daily trips. The findings suggest that opportunistic wardriving with PUVs is viable for wardriving with its capability to detect a high volume of access points (APs). Multiple runs within the University of the Philippines Diliman campus showed the PUVs’ effectiveness in detecting a significant number of APs, with higher success rates at closer distances. Comparatively, warwalking detected fewer APs, but there was a significant overlap between the methods. The study also highlighted significant differences in detected AP types, with wardriving finding more mobile hotspots and miscellaneous devices than warwalking. Overall, the results underline the effectiveness of PUVs in providing extensive WiFi coverage data and further enhancements to the detection system could optimize the approach. ©2024 IEEE.

Reliable internet access is a key enabler for economic growth. Although the Philippine government launched initiatives to improve connectivity, connection speeds remained below the global average, especially for mobile networks. This paper presents Hotspotter, a system that aims to aid implementers and stakeholders in quantifying and addressing network coverage issues. Hotspotter is an incentivized crowdsensing system that collects, maps, and visualizes WiFi and cellular data to pinpoint hotspots and dead zones for the effective deployment and relocation of WiFi access points. A mobile application for Android was developed to facilitate data collection on geolocation, nearby WiFi access points, and connected cellular networks. The user interface visualizes the aggregated data in a hexagon-grid map. Fieldwork was conducted in two sitios of Barangay San Lorenzo, Norzagaray, Bulacan to stress-test the Hotspotter system in a Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Area (GIDA). It was found that 2G and 4G had the widest coverage and strongest signals overall, with modal signal strengths of 4.0 and 3.0, respectively. Being at the cutting edge, 5G was not yet supported. In the end, the mobile application's passive sensing, collecting, and caching of data successfully operated even in the most isolated areas without an internet connection. © 2024 IEEE.

Decision making framework for heterogeneous QoS information: an application to cloud service selection

In recent times, appropriate decision-making in challenging and critical situations has been very well supported by multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods. The technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is the most widely used MCDM method for solving decision problems. However, it restricts decision-makers to use only one type of Quality of Service (QoS) information, and it suffers from the rank reversal problem. Restriction to only one type of QoS makes the decision problems more challenging, as it restricts the decision-makers freedom. Further, the rank reversal problem makes the decision result unreliable. To address these issues of TOPSIS, we have proposed a reliable rank reversal robust modular TOPSIS (RMo-TOPSIS). RMo-TOPSIS allows crisp, interval, fuzzy, intuitionistic and neutrosophic fuzzy QoS metrics. It does not suffer from the rank reversal problem. Cloud computing provides computing services on-demand basis without involving maintenance by its users. The availability of many cloud service providers and their services makes cloud service selection a challenging problem. To validate RMo-TOPSIS, we select the cloud service selection consisting of different types of QoS metrics as an application. Experiments on cloud service selection show consistency and accuracy in results obtained by RMo-TOPSIS and its robustness against rank reversal. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

Because of their development and success, MANETs are now preferred alternatives in many fields of study and application. The IEEE 802.11 standard is the basis of most wireless technologies. To treat collisions in wireless networks, IEEE 802.11 distributed Coordination Function (DCF) MAC layer employs Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm, that is helpful in decreasing the potential of collision, but comes at the expense of several network performance metrics, such as medium access delay, bandwidth management, power use, and fairness. A Deep Learning technique called Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) allows an agent to communicate with the environment in order to accomplish a goal. In the present paper, we suggest Q-learning (QL), one of the DRL approaches to improve the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) in MANETs. The intelligently designed Int-BEB aims for better CW selection;this selection strikes to reduce collisions as much as possible and to give more chances to nodes that make collisions to access the channel by taking into consideration their residual energy. In-depth simulations are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed mechanism. The performance of Int-BEB is evaluated in diverse networks with several criteria such as packet successful transmission, packet loss and energy. © 2023 IEEE.

In the near future, a drastic change in the structure of the electric grid is expected due to the increasing penetration of power electronics interfaced renewable energy sources (e.g. solar and wind), highly variable loads (e.g. electric vehicles and air conditioning) and unexpected energy demanding events (e.g. pandemics or natural disasters). Energy balancing management, voltage and frequency stability, reduced system inertia, grid resilience to fault conditions, and power quality of the supply are a few of the main challenges in the future power electronics dominated grids. Power electronics can solve these by integrating information and communication technology in new intelligent, highly reliable, and efficient devices like smart transformers. Smart transformers can increase the power flow flexibility by enabling the correct meshed-hybrid grid operations, as long as load mission and power generation profiles are known. Those profile are generally driven by heterogeneous, highly sparse and often incomplete data that belong to different domains. This article highlights the necessity of new approaches and models to identify patterns and events of interest that can serve as a common base. The resulting patterns can then be cross-fused in a common language and form the basis of further data analytics in future distribution grids. © 2022, The Author(s).

Background: In this Innovative Practice Work in Progress, we present our initial efforts to integrate formal methods, with a focus on model-checking specifications written in Temporal Logic of Actions (TLA+), into computer science education, targeting undergraduate juniors/seniors and graduate students. Many safety-critical systems and services crucially depend on correct and reliable behavior. Formal methods can play a key role in ensuring correct and safe system behavior, yet remain underutilized in educational and industry contexts. Aims: We aim to (1) qualitatively assess the state of formal methods in computer science programs, (2) construct level-appropriate examples that could be included midway into one's undergraduate studies, (3) demonstrate how to address successive 'failuresy' through progressively stringent safety and liveness requirements, and (4) establish an ongoing framework for assessing interest and relevance among students. Methods: We detail our pedagogical strategy for embedding TLA+ into an intermediate course on formal methods at our institution. After starting with a refresher on mathematical logic, students specify the rules of simple puzzles in TLA+ and use its included model checker (known as TLC) to find a solution. We gradually escalate to more complex, dynamic, event-driven systems, such as the control logic of a microwave oven, where students will study safety and liveness requirements. We subsequently discuss explicit concurrency, along with thread safety and deadlock avoidance, by modeling bounded counters and buffers. Results: Our initial findings suggest that through careful curricular design and choice of examples and tools, it is possible to inspire and cultivate a new generation of software engineers proficient in formal methods. Conclusions: Our initial efforts suggest that 84% of our students had a positive experience in our formal methods course. This paper presents a unified approach for repre-senting multiple domains alongside production in cyber-physical production systems (CPPSs) through domain-specific languages (DSLs). The approach is illustrated using material flows (MFs) as an example. The paper identifies requirements for DSLs in CPPSs and MFs, including concurrency, synchronization, constraints, and heterogeneity support. Subsequently, a plugin system is in-troduced for the existing Production Flow Description Language (PFDL), which allows users to incorporate additional domain-specific functionality in the form of plugins. To demonstrate this approach, we present the MF plugin, resulting in the combined PFDLMF. This showcases the reusability of such an approach and the easy integration of new CPPS domains. We envision the convergence of the PFDL with plugins towards a unified flow description language for CPPSs. A practical CPPS use-case demonstrates the expressiveness of the PFDLMF in modeling and executing complex MFs in an agent-based architecture. © 2024 IEEE.
