Active functionality is especially useful for enforcing business rules in applications, such as Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) and e-commerce. It can be used as glue among existing applications, and for data transformations between heterogeneous applications. However, traditional active mechanisms have been designed for centralized systems and are monolithic, thus making it difficult to extend and adapt them to the requirements imposed by distributed, heterogeneous environments. To correct this we present a flexible, extensible, service-based architecture built on ontologies, services and events/notifications. The main contributions of this work are: i) the homogeneous use of ontologies for a semantically meaningful exchange and combination of events in open heterogeneous environments, and for the infrastructure itself;ii) a flexible architecture for the composition of autonomous, elementary services to provide Event-Condition-Action (ECA) functionality in different configurations;iii) the interaction of these services via notifications using a publish/subscribe mechanism (concept-based addressing). © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

A mobile ad-hoc network (Manet) is a system of wireless mobile nodes dynamically self-organizing in arbitrary and temporary network topologies. People and vehicles can thus be internetworked in areas without a pre-existing communication infrastructure, or when the use of such infrastructure requires wireless extension. Therefore, such networks are designed to operate in widely varying environments, from military networks to low-power sensor networks and other embedded systems. Frequent topology changes caused by node mobility make routing in ad hoc wireless networks a challenging problem. We focus upon routing protocols for ad hoc networks. We study and compare the performance of several routing protocols. A variety of workload and scenarios using a variety of mobility, load and size of the ad hoc network were simulated.

Managing distributed applications results in a large number of routine management tasks to be performed. Thus, the goal of management has to be the automation of these tasks to the greatest possible extent. This automation requires the definition of management algorithms which describe the behaviour of the management system. The paper presents AMANDA (Automated Management of distributed Applications), a phase-oriented method for developing management algorithms for CORBA applications. These management algorithms are defined using unified modelling language (UML) statecharts and are transformed into autonomous CORBA management objects.

Dominance constraints are logical tree descriptions originating from automata theory that have multiple applications in computational linguistics. The satisfiability problem of dominance constraints is NP-complete. In most applications, however, only normal dominance constraints are used. The satisfiability problem of normal dominance constraints can be reduced in linear time to the configuration problem of dominance graphs, as shown recently. In this paper, we give a polynomial time algorithm testing configurability of dominance graphs (and thus satisfiability of normal dominance constraints). Previous to our work no polynomial time algorithms were known. Copyright © 2009 ACM, Inc.

This paper presents linguistic primitives for publish/subscribe programming using events and objects. We integrate our primitives into a strongly typed object-oriented language through four mechnisms: (1) serialization, (2) multiple subtyping, (3)closures, and (4) deferred code evaluation. We illustrate our primitives through Java, showing how we have overcome its respective lacks. A precompiler transforms statements based on our publish/subscribe primitives into calls to specifically generated typed adapters, which resemble the typed stubs and skeletons by the rmic precompiler for remote method invocations in Java

Ad hoc networks are wireless, mobile networks that can be set up anywhere and anytime without the aid of any established infrastructure or centralized administration. Because of the limited range of each host's wireless transmission, to communicate with hosts outside its transmission range, a host needs to enlist the aid of its nearby hosts in forwarding packets to the destination. However, since there is no stationary infrastructure such as base stations, each host has to act as a router for itself. A routing protocol for ad hoc networks is executed on every host and is therefore subject to the limit of the resources at each mobile host. A good routing protocol should minimize the computing load on the host as well as the traffic overhead on the network. Therefore, a number of routing protocols have been proposed for ad hoc wireless networks. We focus upon on-demand schemes. We study and compare the performance of the following three routing protocols AODV, CBRP and DSR. A variety of workload and scenarios, as characterized by mobility, load and size of the ad hoc network were simulated. Our results indicate that despite its improvement in reducing route request packets, CBRP has a higher overhead than DSR because of its periodic hello messages while AODV's end-to-end packet delay is the shortest when compared to DSR and CBRP.

Abstract: Data Distribution Management (DDM) is a High Level Architecture/Run-time Infrastructure (HLA/RTI) service that manages the distribution of state updates and interaction information in large scale distributed simulations, limits and controls the volume of data exchanged during the simulation. In this paper we focus upon the following three DDM schemes: Region-Based, Fixed and Dynamic Grid-Based techniques. In an effort to determine the most efficient model for applying the DDM service, we developed a mini-RTI Kit framework and propose a set of benchmarks to compare these DDM schemes. Using the RTI Kit, we performed extensive simulation experiments and present our analysis of the results of numerous federation executions.

The rapid development in portable computing platforms, distributed multimedia systems and wireless communication technologies has led to a significant interest in mobile multimedia and wireless networking. Video entertainment and multimedia Internet access over wireless networks are examples of future wireless personal communication systems. These, however, incur challenging technological issues. The synchronization of the multimedia objects among mobile clients is one of the most important of these issues. The task of synchronization in wireless multimedia systems is to eliminate variations and delays incurred during the transmission of multiple-media streams and to maintain the temporal order among the various media streams. We propose an efficient distributed multimedia synchronization algorithm for wireless and mobile multimedia systems to ensure and facilitate mobile clients' access to multimedia objects. We discuss the algorithm and provide its formal proof and correctness.

We describe our work in implementing business-to-business (B2B) contracts using Microsoft's BizTalk. BizTalk is a Microsoft product for the development of XML based document messaging systems specifically for e-commerce. We have developed a B2B enterprise model that supports a wide range of economic transactions associated with intangible goods and services. This model guides implementation of our business contract architecture software. The model identifies specific roles such as a repository for contract schemas and instances, auditor, monitor and enforcer. A contract scenario is used to illustrate the architecture and concepts described. We go into detail on the BizTalk implementation of contracts and show how a contract can be used as the basis for policies and plans that govern the behavior of the parties involved in the contract.
