The ever-increasing complexity of applications and networks man-agement demands alternative solutions for identifying of suitable deployment configurations in line with established Service Level Agreements. Some existing approaches utilize methods such as mathematical simulation and application re-enactment under a sim-ulated load implemented as digital twin. In this paper, we describe a mixed-modal framework for varying composition of the above approaches hence improving the performance of application’s ser-vice level modeling further. This framework facilitates the best simulation model performance at any given time by anticipating the model drift and by continuously monitoring performance of the mixed-modal simulation model.

FEniCS-preCICE: Coupling FEniCS to other simulation software

The new software FEniCS-preCICE is a middle software layer, sitting in between the existing finite-element library FEniCS and the coupling library preCICE. The middle layer simplifies coupling (existing) FEniCS application codes to other simulation software via preCICE. To this end, FEniCS-preCICE converts between FEniCS and preCICE mesh and data structures, provides easy-to-use coupling conditions, and manages data checkpointing for implicit coupling. The new software is a library itself and follows a FEniCS-native style. Only a few lines of additional code are necessary to prepare a FEniCS application code for coupling. We illustrate the functionality of FEniCS-preCICE by two examples: a FEniCS heat conduction code coupled to OpenFOAM and a FEniCS linear elasticity code coupled to SU2. The results of both scenarios are compared with other simulation software showing good agreement. © 2021, CC BY-NC-ND.

Control flow vs. data flow in distributed systems integration: Revival of flow-based programming for the industrial internet of things

When we consider the application layer [1] of networked infrastructures, data and control flow are important concerns in distributed systems integration. Modularity is a fundamental principle in software design [2], in particular for distributed system architectures. Modularity emphasizes high cohesion of individual modules and low coupling between modules. Microservices are a recent modularization approach with the specific requirements of independent deployability and, in particular, decentralized data management [3]. Cohesiveness of microservices goes hand-in-hand with loose coupling, making the development, deployment, and evolution of microservice architectures flexible and scalable [4]. However, in our experience with microservice architectures, interactions and flows among microservices are usually more complex than in traditional, monolithic enterprise systems, since services tend to be smaller and only have one responsibility, causing collaboration needs. We suggest that for loose coupling among microservices, explicit control-flow modeling and execution with central workflow engines should be avoided on the application integration level. On the level of integrating microservices, data-flow modeling should be dominant. Control-flow should be secondary and preferably delegated to the microservices. We discuss coupling in distributed systems integration and reflect the history of business process modeling with respect to data and control flow. To illustrate our recommendations, we present some results for flow-based programming in our Industrial DevOps project Titan, where we employ flow-based programming for the Industrial Internet of Things. Machine learning for education is an emerging discipline where a model is developed based on training data to make predictions on students’ performance. The main aim is to identify students who would have difficulty in their learning and to take precautionary measures to help them. In this paper, we conduct a comparative analysis of the most used machine learning classification models in the literature. We evaluate the performance of the models in terms of accuracy, F-measure, and execution time using two real-life education datasets. The performance of the models is data-driven. We give insights into the models’ performance and advise on the best model to use accordingly. In distributed systems, checkpointing method can be used to ensure fault-tolerance, which in turn could help the system’s security and stability. In simple terms, checkpointing means saving status information of a system. In this work, a novel hierarchical checkpointing algorithm for distributed systems is proposed, which runs on cluster federation. This algorithm is based on two well-known techniques in the literature and it ensures that a locally consistent state is always maintained in each cluster with a global optimistic logging technique between clusters. The proposed algorithm synchronizes the intra- and inter-cluster checkpointing process in such way that each checkpoint taken locally in any cluster is a segment of the consistent global state. Compared to other works, our scheme has low message cost as it makes sure that only few processes in each cluster record checkpoints for any execution operation. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2020.

The care of multiple victims such as in natural disasters in an Emergency department is critical. This differs from ordinary care by the number of patients that arrive, their severity and insufficient staff for these events. Designing and simulating this real life scenario will be useful for disaster management decision makers. The objective of this simulation is to model a system with resilience to critical situations. To model the input of this research, we worked with the percentage of patients received by Cauquenes Hospital during the Chilean Earthquake on February 27th, 2010. A comparison of two situations has been carried out: the admission of patients before an earthquake with normal daily attention versus the admission of patients before an earthquake and the activation of the relief chain. The latter situation allows the system to be resilient and adapt quickly to its new reality. © 2023 IEEE.

The design of optical transport and IP networks is investigated with respect to the effect on overall network performance when the two aspects are combined in the same network architecture. The focus is on the identification of advantages in the joint design of IP and transport networks, as well as on the shortcomings and network bottlenecks which may result from sub-optimal design. The impact of different IP routing strategies (shortest path, equal-cost multipath) on the network utilization is quantified, and potential sources for overload in the IP domain are determined. Simulations were carried out to systematically assess technical metrics like link utilization and economic parameters such as cost for a 50-node transport network with line rates up to 40 Gbit/s. The impact of fiber cuts was taken into account, leading to multiple logical IP links to fail simultaneously, i.e. shared risk link groups (SRLGs), and triggering massive IP rerouting. Applying the results allows to identify bottlenecks in the design, and to devise mechanisms which allow cost-optimal network design of future IP and optical transport networks. © 2020 ITG-Fachtagung.

Problems of research of underground gas storage (UGS) wells are given. The analysis of the results of well research is carried out and the constant variability of filtration resistance coefficients of bottomhole zones of wells is substantiated. Studies of the influence of bottomhole pressures of wells on the calculated pressure at gas gathering stations (GGS) of underground storage facilities have been carried out. It was found that the calculated filtration resistance coefficients do not allow to calculate the pressures at the gas gathering stations of the underground storage plant with sufficient accuracy. The magnitude of the discrepancy between the measured and calculated pressures on the GGS varies depending on the flow rate and operating time of wells. It is established that the calculation of depression (repression) of pressure in the bottomhole zones of wells in non-stationary conditions of their operation gives underestimated results.

Kubernetes provides several functions that can help service providers to deal with the management of complex container-based applications. However, most of these functions need a time-consuming and costly customization process to address service-specific requirements. The adoption of Digital Twin (DT) solutions can ease the configuration process by enabling the evaluation of multiple configurations and custom policies by means of simulation-based what-if scenario analysis. To facilitate this process, this paper proposes KubeTwin, a framework to enable the definition and evaluation of DTs of Kubernetes applications. Specifically, this work presents an innovative simulation-based inference approach to define accurate DT models for a Kubernetes environment. We experimentally validate the proposed solution by implementing a DT model of an image recognition application that we tested under different conditions to verify the accuracy of the DT model. The soundness of these results demonstrates the validity of the KubeTwin approach and calls for further investigation.
