Generic Context Adaptation for Mobile Cloud Computing Environments

Markets for mobile applications offer myriads of apps ranging from simple to quite demanding ones. The latter are on the rise since every new generation of smartphones is equipped with more resources (CPU, memory, bandwidth, energy) to even allow resource-demanding services like speech- or face recognition to be executed locally on a device. But compared to their stationary counterparts, mobile devices remain comparatively limited in terms of resources. Because of this, current approaches aim at extending mobile device capabilities with computation and storage resources offered by cloud services or other nearby devices. This paradigm, known as Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC), is challenged by the dynamically changing context of mobile devices, which developers are required to take into account to decide, e.g., which application parts are when to offload. To rise to such and similar challenges we introduce the concept of Generic Context Adaptation (GCA), a data mining process that facilitates the adaptation of (mobile) applications to their current and future context. Moreover, we evaluate our approach with real usage data provided by the Nokia Mobile Data Challenge (MDC) as well as with CloudAware , a context-adaptive mobile middleware for MCC that supports automated context-aware self-adaptation techniques.

In disaster situations communication and power infrastructure could be damaged, disrupting their associated services. This could delay relief efforts and cost more lives. In situations where connections are damaged and unreliable, peer-to-peer (P2P) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN) technologies can help provide alternative communication modes particularly in support of rescue and relief operations. Combining the benefits of the store-and-forward capability of DTN and the data propagation techniques of Wi-Fi Direct, we have created a flexible framework called ARC which allows users to create applications that could meet their specific requirements, particularly those in support of emergency communications. To demonstrate our framework, we created a simple application using ARC, and used this application to evaluate its DTN and Wi-Fi Direct group recovery capabilities. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper introduces a new approach for solving the navigation problem of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) by studying its rotational and translational dynamics and then solving the nonlinear model by the Decomposition Coordination method. The objective is to reach a destination goal by the mean of an autonomous computed optimal path calculated through optimal control sequence. Solving such complex systems often requires a great amount of computation. However, the approach considered herein is based on the Decomposition Coordination principle, which allows the nonlinearity to be treated at a local level, thus offering a low computing time. The stability of the method is discussed with sufficient conditions for convergence. A numerical application is given in consolidation the theoretical results.

A science department on the campus of the University of Illinois has received numerous national awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching. The secret to their success? For nearly two decades, they have collaboratively used evidence-based instructional practices (EBIP) in their introductory level courses. Despite these successes and efforts to spread their EBIP, no other departments followed this department's lead. Then, suddenly six years ago, many instructors from other departments began adopting EBIP in their classrooms. This article asks what was the catalyst for this change? Why had previous attempts at institutional change failed? The authors answer these questions by analyzing their efforts to transform the teaching practices in large-enrollment science and engineering introductory courses on their campus.

From an ecological and economic perspective, saving energy is an important factor for the design of today's computing systems. However, building energy-efficient systems is a challenging task for system designers. It requires exact knowledge about the system's components (i.e., software and hardware components) and it is not immediately obvious how the energy demand of a system can be improved. This paper presents energy-aware programming techniques that help developers at optimizing the energy demand of software. Such techniques address sensibility aspects (i.e., energy awareness) and provide optimization suggestions to developers. The paper further discusses responsibility aspects that emerge from the advent of energy-aware programming techniques.

In this paper, Traveling Salesman Problem with Hotel Selection (TSPHS), an extension of the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP) has been considered. A mathematical formulation has been presented in the framework of Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP). Subsequently, the problem has been formulated in the novel framework of tropical mathematics and a strategy to obtain exact solution has been proposed. The performance of the proposed solution, in terms of the optimality and computational time requirement, has been compared with the solution strategies available in literature including traditional MILP. The results indicate that the proposed solution strategy not only leads to optimal results but also is computationally much more efficient.

The demand for computing resources to process the geographical information (GI) queries has been increased drastically. The query helps the users to get the variety of information to serve their needs. Resolving the spatial queries, huge number of heterogeneous data sources along with different computing services are involved. Getting appropriate results within a specific time bound, orchestration among those data sources and web services are required. These services are available on the web and require different resource specifications in order to resolve a geospatial query. A cloud infrastructure has been utilized for scalable resource allocation. An orchestration engine has been developed to access the geospatial resources according to query requirement. In this paper, we have proposed and developed geographical data query processing framework which orchestrates spatial services according to user query in cloud environment. The empirical experimentation shows the efficiency of the proposed framework to resolve spatial queries in timely manner.

Context-Aware Computation Offloading for Mobile Cloud Computing: Requirements Analysis, Survey and Design Guideline

Along with the rise of mobile handheld devices the resource demands of respective applications grow as well. However, mobile devices are still and will always be limited related to performance (e.g., computation, storage and battery life), context adaptation (e.g., intermittent connectivity, scalability and heterogeneity) and security aspects. A prominent solution to overcome these limita- tions is the so-called computation offloading, which is the focus of mobile cloud computing (MCC). However, current approaches fail to address the complexity that results from quickly and constantly changing context conditions in mobile user scenarios and hence developing effective and efficient MCC applications is still challenging. Therefore, this paper first presents a list of re- quirements for MCC applications together with a survey and classification of current solutions. Furthermore, it provides a design guideline for the selection of suitable concepts for different classes of common cloud-augmented mobile applications. Finally, it presents open issues that developers and researchers should be aware of when designing their MCC-approach.

Cloud computing has become a widely used paradigm in many IT domains such as e-health. It offers several advantages to the users, e.g. elasticity, flexibility and the rapid sharing of a huge set of digital data. However, many security and privacy concerns still pose significant challenges. In particular, the most identified problem is how to enforce the user's security policy in the access control of the outsourced data. In fact, cloud environments does not provide facilities to support high level defined security policies. For instance, the swift storage component of openstack supports only fine grained access control to execute a specific action on a specific defined object. In this paper, we designed and implemented a middleware to provide high level security policies while using such swift fine grained primitives. An e-health collaborative application dedicated for remote diagnosis is used to illustrate the suggested approach. © 2015 IEEE.

The wide adoption of smart devices has stimulated a fast shift of security-critical data from desktop to mobile devices. However, recurrent device theft and loss expose mobile devices to various security threats and even physical attacks. This paper presents TinMan, a system that protects confidential data such as web site password and credit card number (we use the term cor to represent these data, which is short for Confidential Record) from being leaked or abused even under device theft. TinMan separates accesses of cor from the rest of the functionalities of an app, by introducing a trusted node to store cor and offloading any code from a mobile device to the trusted node to access cor. This completely eliminates the exposure of cor on the mobile devices. The key challenges to TinMan include deciding when and how to efficiently and transparently offload execution;Tin-Man addresses these challenges with security-oriented offloading with a low-overhead tainting scheme called asymmetric tainting to track accesses to cor to trigger offloading, as well as transparent SSL session injection and TCP payload replacement to offload accesses to cor. We have implemented a prototype of TinMan based on Android and demonstrated how TinMan protects the information of user's bank account and credit card number without modifying the apps. Evaluation results also show that TinMan incurs only a small amount of performance and power overhead. Copyright © 2015 ACM.
