Enhancing reciprocity has been one of the primary motivations for the design of incentive policies in BitTorrent-like P2P systems. Reciprocity implies that peers need to contribute their bandwidth to other peers if they want to receive bandwidth in return. However, the over-provisioning that characterizes today's BitTorrent communities and the development of many next-generation P2P systems with real-time constraints (e.g., for live and on-demand streaming) suggest that more effort can be devoted to reducing the inequity (i.e., the difference of service received) among peers, rather than only enhancing reciprocity. Inspired by this observation, in this work we analyze in detail several incentive mechanisms that are used in BitTorrent systems, and explore several strategies that influence the balance between reciprocity and equity. Our study shows that (i) reducing inequity leads to a better overall system performance, and (ii) the behavior of seeders (i.e., peers that hold a complete copy of the file and upload it for free) influences whether reciprocity is enhanced or inequity reduced. © 2011 IEEE.

As wireless networks become a critical part of home, business and industrial infrastructure, researchers will meet these demands by providing new networking technologies. However, these technologies must be tested before they can be released for mainstream use. We identify the key design considerations for a wireless networking testbed as a) accuracy b) controllability c) mobility d) repeatability e) cost effectiveness f) data collection g) resource sharing h) multi-nodal capability i) scalability. In this paper we portray how we have used coaxial cables and our custom hardware of RF switches and programmable attenuators to create Advanced wireleSS Environment Research Testbed (assert), addressing the above requirements. assert supports various types of wireless devices, providing researchers in academia and industry with the necessary experimentation tools to validate their designed protocols and devices.

Current disk encryption techniques store necessary keys in RAM and are therefore susceptible to attacks that target volatile memory, such as Firewire and cold boot attacks. We present TRESOR, a Linux kernel patch that implements the AES encryption algorithm and its key management solely on the microprocessor. Instead of using RAM, TRESOR ensures that all encryption states as well as the secret key and any part of it are only stored in processor registers throughout the operational time of the system, thereby substantially increasing its security. Our solution takes advantage of Intel's new AES-NI instruction set and exploits the x86 debug registers in a non-standard way, namely as cryptographic key storage. TRESOR is compatible with all modern Linux distributions, and its performance is on a par with that of standard AES implementations. © 2011 by The USENIX Association.

This paper concentrates on the evaluation system of hot topics in the online news about the emergency events. First, the overall technology framework of the system was established and description was formulated on the key issues need to be resolved prior to the evaluation of the hot topics. Focusing on the vector representation of the news documents and clustering algorithm of the news topics, a modified TF-IDF text representation model was formulated and an improved selection method of initial topic clustering center was established. The evaluation model of the hot topics was then established to evaluate the heat value of the clustered topics based on extracting websites feature parameters, such as the time properties of the news reports, reporting properties, and user attention. Finally, the paper takes news of 2011 Japan Earthquake as data source for algorism and model evaluation. The results showed that the identification and evaluation system of hot topics in online news about the emergency events was valid, and the evaluation result of hot topics by the systems agreed with the expected results. It lays a foundation for the subsequent studying about the tracking and evolution of the hot topics.

This paper presents the results of an ongoing project that is being carried out by the Research Group in Individual Oriented Modelling (IoM) of the University Autonoma of Barcelona (UAB) with the participation of Hospital Emergency department (ED) Staff Teams. Its general objective is creating a simulator that, used as decision support system (DSS), aids the heads of the ED to make the best informed decisions possible. The defined ED model is a pure Agent-Based Model, formed entirely of the rules governing the behaviour of the individual agents which populate the system. The actions of agents and the communication between them are represented using Moore state machines extended to include probabilistic transitions. The model also includes the environment in which agents move and interact. With the aim of verifying the proposed model an initial simulation has been created using NetLogo.

Type-safe high-level languages such as Java have not yet found their way into the domain of deeply embedded systems, even though numerous attempts have been made to make these languages cost attractive. One major challenge that remains is the huge existing code base in many industries. Completely reengineering this code base is not viable for cost and time reasons. We present an approach that allows to isolatedly combine legacy software components and safe software components in an embedded system using the two most common communication idioms found in this domain. Our approach allows the developer to freely choose between hardware- and software-based isolation mechanisms. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by porting a non-trivial part of a real-world, hard real-time embedded avionics application. Our results show that the cost of this mixed-mode operation is on the same scale as the pure operation.

The project MoSGrid (Molecular Simulation Grid) has been developing a web-based science gateway supporting the community with various services for quantum chemistry, molecular modeling, and docking. Users gain access to distributed computing infrastructures (DCIs) via intuitive user interfaces for sophisticated tools, specialized workflows, and distributed repositories. Currently, the MoSGrid community consists of about 120 users from a number of fields related to chemistry and bioinformatics located in Germany. However, the underlying security infrastructure is generally applicable and can be deployed in arbitrary projects. Mobile agents have been proposed as a means to address two important issues in the design of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN): the need for reprogramming the network and decreasing energy expenditure. However, few mobile agent systems have been developed for WSN so far. In this paper we describe MASPOT, a mobile agent system for Sun SPOT, a WSN platform developed by Sun Microsystems. MASPOT provides a solution to the issues above and extends the range of Sun SPOT applications. To the best of our knowledge, MASPOT is the only Java-based mobile agent system for WSN that currently supports code migration. We describe the system and present the results of an experiment to evaluate the amount of energy spent during agent migration. It showed that migration spends around 0.03% of the nodes battery energy. Additionally, MASPOT uses only around 1.5% of the available flash memory of Sun SPOT nodes.

Multihop wireless networks, such as sensor-, ad hoc- and mesh-networks, although different share some common characteristics. All these networks exhibit link dynamics. Protocols designed for these wireless networks must overcome the challenge of link dynamics and the resulting churn in network topology. Due to structural and topological similarities, protocols developed for one class of wireless network should also be applicable in the other classes. However, network-layer protocols are usually developed for and tested in only one class of wireless network due to the lack of a platform that allows testing of protocols across different classes of networks. As a result, we unnecessarily constrain the range of settings and scenarios in which we test network protocols. In this paper, we present TinyWifi, a platform for executing native sensornet protocols on Linux-driven wireless devices. TinyWifi builds on nesC code base that abstracts from TinyOS and enables the execution of nesC-based protocols in Linux. Using this abstraction, we expand the applicability and means of protocol execution from one class of wireless network to another without re-implementation. We demonstrate the generality of TinyWifi by evaluating four well-established protocols on IEEE 802.11 and 802.15.4 based testbeds using a single implementation. © 2011 ACM.

Service-orientation provides concepts and tools for flexible composition and management of large-scale distributed software applications. The automated run-time management of such loosely coupled software systems, however, poses still major challenges and is therefore an active research area, including the use of novel computing paradigms. In this context, the dynamic and adaptive selection of best possible service providers is an important task, which can be addressed by an appropriate middleware layer that allows considering different service quality aspects when managing the adaptive execution of distributed service workflows dynamically. In such an approach, service consumers are enabled to delegate the adaptive selection of service providers at run-time to the execution infrastructure. The selection criteria used are based on the cost of a service provision and the continuous, dynamic evaluation of reputations of providers, i.e. maintained track records of meeting the respective service commitments. This paper discusses the design and operating principle of such an automatic service selection middleware extension. Its ability to balance different quality criteria for service selection, such as service cost vs. the reliability of provision, is empirically evaluated based on a multi-agent platform approach. © J.
