Cloud Federation is a recent paradigm that helps Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers to overcome resource limitation during spikes in demand for Virtual Machines (VMs) by outsourcing requests to other federation members. IaaS providers also have the option of terminating spot VMs, i.e, cheaper VMs that can be canceled to free resources for more profitable VM requests. By both approaches, providers can expect to reject less profitable requests. For IaaS providers, pricing and profit are two important factors, in addition to maintaining a high Quality of Service (QoS) and utilization of their resources to remain in the business. For this, a clear understanding of the usage pattern, types of requests, and infrastructure costs are necessary while making decisions to terminate spot VMs, outsourcing or contributing to the federation. In this paper, we propose policies that help in the decision-making process to increase resources utilization and profit. Simulation results indicate that the proposed policies enhance the profit, utilization, and QoS (smaller number of rejected VM requests) in a Cloud federation environment.

Cloud computing paradigm allows on-demand access to computing and storages services over the Internet. To solve the complexity of application deployment in Cloud infrastructure, virtual appliances, pre-configured, ready-to-run applications are emerging as a breakthrough technology. However, an automated approach for deploying network of appliances is required to guarantee minimum deployment cost, low latency, and high reliability. In this paper, we propose and compare two different deployment approaches: Forward-checking-based backtracking (FCBB) and genetic-based. They take into account Quality of Service (QoS) criteria such as reliability, data communication cost, and latency between multiple Clouds to choose the most appropriate combination of virtual machines and appliances. We evaluate our approach using a real case study and different request types. Experimental results show both algorithms reach near optimal solution. Further, we investigate effects of factors such as latency requirements, and data communication between appliances on the performance of the algorithms and placement of appliances across multiple Clouds.

This paper presents an Agent-Based modeling and simulation to design a decision support system (DSS) for the operation of Healthcare Emergency departments (ED). This DSS aims to aid EDs managers in setting up strategies and management guidelines to optimize the operation of EDs. This ongoing research is being performed by the Research Group on Individual Oriented Modeling (IoM) of CAOS in the University Autonoma of Barcelona (UAB) in close collaboration with Hospital ED Staff. The simulation main objective is to optimize the performance of such complex and dynamic Healthcare ED. Optimization is performed to find the optimal ED staff configuration, which consists of doctors, triage nurses, and admission personnel, i.e. a multidimensional problem. Two different indexes, to minimize patient waiting time, and to maximize patient throughput, were proposed and tested and their results obtained appying an exhaustive search technique, yield promising results and better understanding of the problem.

Modeling and simulation have been shown to be useful tools in many areas of the Healthcare operational management, field in which there is probably no area more dynamic and complex than hospital emergency departments (ED). This paper presents the results of an ongoing project that is being carried out by the Research Group in Individual Oriented Modeling (IoM) of the University Autonoma of Barcelona (UAB) with the participation of Hospital of Sabadell ED Staff Team. Its general objective is creating a simulator that, used as decision support system (DSS), aids the heads of the ED to make the best informed decisions possible. The defined ED model is a pure Agent-Based Model, formed entirely of the rules governing the behavior of the individual agents which populate the system. Two distinct types of agents have been identified, active and passive. Active agents represent human actors, meanwhile passive agents represent services and other reactive systems. The actions of agents and the communication between them will be represented using Moore state machines extended to include probabilistic transitions. The model also includes the environment in which agents move and interact. With the aim of verifying the proposed model an initial simulation has been created using NetLogo, an agent-based simulation environment well suited for modeling complex systems.

Mobile agents have been proposed as a means to address two important issues in the design of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN): the need for reprogramming the network and decreasing energy expenditure. However, few mobile agent systems have been developed for WSN so far. In this paper we describe MASPOT, a mobile agent system for Sun SPOT, a WSN platform developed by Sun Microsystems. MASPOT provides a solution to the issues above and extends the range of Sun SPOT applications. To the best of our knowledge, MASPOT is the only Java-based mobile agent system for WSN that currently supports code migration. We describe the system and present the results of an experiment to evaluate the amount of energy spent during agent migration. It showed that migration spends around 0.03% of the nodes battery energy. Additionally, MASPOT uses only around 1.5% of the available flash memory of Sun SPOT nodes.

With the growth of Cloud Computing, more and more companies are offering different cloud services. From the customer's point of view, it is always difficult to decide whose services they should use, based on users' requirements. Currently there is no software framework which can automatically index cloud providers based on their needs. In this work, we propose a framework and a mechanism, which measure the quality and prioritize Cloud services. Such framework can make significant impact and will create healthy competition among Cloud providers to satisfy their Service Level Agreement (SLA) and improve their Quality of Services (QoS).

Different sorts of peer-to-peer (P2P) applications emerge every day and they are becoming more and more popular. The performance of such applications may be measured by means of Quality of Experience (QoE) metrics. In this paper, the factors that influence these metrics are surveyed. Moreover, the impact of economic traffic management solutions (e.g., proposed by IETF) on perceived QoE for the dominant overlay applications is assessed. The possible regulatory issues regarding QoE for P2P applications are also mentioned.

Enhancing reciprocity has been one of the primary motivations for the design of incentive policies in BitTorrent-like P2P systems. Reciprocity implies that peers need to contribute their bandwidth to other peers if they want to receive bandwidth in return. However, the over-provisioning that characterizes today's BitTorrent communities and the development of many next-generation P2P systems with real-time constraints (e.g., for live and on-demand streaming) suggest that more effort can be devoted to reducing the inequity (i.e., the difference of service received) among peers, rather than only enhancing reciprocity. Inspired by this observation, in this work we analyze in detail several incentive mechanisms that are used in BitTorrent systems, and explore several strategies that influence the balance between reciprocity and equity. Our study shows that (i) reducing inequity leads to a better overall system performance, and (ii) the behavior of seeders (i.e., peers that hold a complete copy of the file and upload it for free) influences whether reciprocity is enhanced or inequity reduced.
Extensive data generated by peers of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) needs to be analysed and processed in order to extract information that is meaningful to the user. Data processing techniques that achieve ...
