As embedded and real-time systems became an inherent part of many electronic appliances of everyday use, the demand for their development has grown enormously. Increasing complexity of these systems leads to demands of tools and techniques addressing their efficient and short time-to-market development. One of the possible ways to tackle the problem is a reuse of tools, methodologies and know how already established and successfully adopted in other application domains. Such transfer cannot be done inherently without appropriate modification and methodical adaptation based on an analysis of domain requirements. The paper analyzes necessary modifications and extensions of a general purpose component-based technology to enable development of embedded real-time systems. In addition, we present our own experience obtained while tailoring advanced component framework SOFA 2 to support development of embedded and real-time systems. © 2011 IEEE.

Among several techniques proposed for indoor positioning using IEEE 802.11 Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) based networks, those that rely on fingerprinting have been demonstrated to outperform those based on lateration, angulation, and cell of origin in terms of accuracy. We compare and evaluate three Wi-Fi fingerprinting techniques that use the K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Naive Bayes Classifier (NBC) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Our experiments show that SVM-based fingerprinting outperformed both k-NN and NBC-based fingerprinting, achieving accuracies of 2 meters or better within our testbed.

Mobile information systems (MIS) are finding their way into private and business every-day activities. There are also increased attempts to establish MIS for on-site activities in industrial facilities. Industrial environments, however, place significantly higher demands on mobile user interfaces than office or home environments. Common interaction styles are often unsuitable for this domain. MIS comprising specialized configurations like wearable systems might overcome current limitations. Wearable systems make it possible to arrange system components in the immediate environment of the user's body in order to create an ergonomic and intuitive user interface. However, the use of distributed, body-worn user interfaces, and in particular separation of input and output devices, might increase the workload for the user. This study examines the extent to which the separation of input and output devices affects the workload for wearable MIS. Three interaction styles in two different configurations are investigated with four different measures to determine the workload covering both objective and subjective indicators. This investigation shows that there is no significant increase of workload in general. However, the measurement of the heart rate variability revealed subtle but significant differences between the two configurations, particularly for one interaction style. These findings indicate that physiological measures can provide more detailed and subtle information about additional workload and its source than other measures. © 2011 ACM.

Rich types of data offered by data as a service(DaaS) in the cloud are typically associated with different and complex data concerns that DaaS service providers, data providers and data consumers must carefully examine and agree with before passing and utilizing data. Unlike service agreements, data agreements, reflecting conditions established on the basis of data concerns, between relevant stakeholders have got little attention. However, as data concerns are complex and contextual, given the trend of mixing data sources by automated techniques, such as data mash up, data agreements must be associated with data discovery, retrieval and utilization. Unfortunately, exchanging data agreements so far has not been automated and incorporated into service and data discovery and composition. In this paper, we analyze possible steps and propose interactions among data consumers, DaaS service providers and data providers in exchanging data agreements. Based on that, we present a novel service for composing, managing, analyzing data agreements for DaaS in cloud environments and data marketplaces.

This paper proposes a path planning algorithm and a velocity control algorithm for underwater gliders to persistently monitor a patch of ocean. The algorithms address a pressing need among ocean scientists to collect high-value data for studying ocean events of scientific and environmental interest, such as the occurrence of harmful algal blooms. The path planner optimizes a cost function that blends two competing factors: it maximizes the information value of the path, while minimizing the deviation from the path due to ocean currents. The speed control algorithm then optimizes the speed along the planned path so that higher resolution samples are collected in areas of higher information value. The resulting paths are closed circuits that can be repeatedly traversed to collect long term ocean data in dynamic environments. The algorithms were tested during sea trials on an underwater glider operating off the coast of southern California over the course of several weeks. The results show significant improvements in data resolution and path reliability compared to a sampling path that is typically used in the region.

In this paper we present a prototype of the RTSC - the Real-Time System Compiler. The RTSC is a compiler-based tool that leverages the migration from event-triggered to time-triggered real-time systems. For this purpose, it uses an abstraction called Atomic Basic Blocks (ABBs) which is used to capture all relevant dependencies of the event-triggered system in a so-called ABB-graph. This ABB-graph is transformed by the RTSC and finally mapped to a statically computed schedule that could be executed by standard time-triggered real-time operating systems. Moreover, we demonstrate the applicability of our approach and the operation of our prototype by transforming the event-triggered implementation of a real-world embedded system into a trime-triggered equivalent. © 2010 IEEE.

Extensive data generated by peers of nodes in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) needs to be analysed and processed in order to extract information that is meaningful to the user. Data processing techniques that achieve this goal on sensor nodes are required to operate while meeting resource constraints such as memory and power to prolong a sensor network's lifetime. This survey serves to provide a comprehensive examination of such techniques, enabling developers of WSN applications to select and implement data processing techniques that perform efficiently for their intended WSN application. It presents a general analysis of the issue of energy conservation in sensor networks and an up-to-date classification and evaluation of data processing techniques that have factored in energy constraints of sensors. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have attracted growing interest in the last decade as an infrastructure to support a diversity of ubiquitous computing and cyber-physical systems. However, most research work has focused on protocols or on specific applications. As a result, there remains a clear lack of effective, feasible and usable system architectures that address both functional and non-functional requirements in an integrated fashion. In this paper, we outline the EMMON system architecture for large-scale, dense, real-time embedded monitoring. EMMON provides a hierarchical communication architecture together with integrated middleware and command and control software. It has been designed to use standard commercially-available technologies, while maintaining as much flexibility as possible to meet specific applications requirements. The EMMON architecture has been validated through extensive simulation and experimental evaluation, including a 300+ node test-bed, which is, to the best of our knowledge, the largest single-site WSN test-bed in Europe to date.

Increasing automation of business processes and industrial demand for complex workflow features have led to the development of more flexible and agile workflow concepts. One of those concepts is the use of goal-oriented workflows, which rely on ideas derived from agent technology like describing the workflows based on a goal hierarchy. While this reduces the gap between business view and IT view and allows for easy implementation of contengencies, the concepts have greater conceptual abstraction obscuring the control flow and reducing the ability of workflow engineers to identify specification flaws in the workflow. This paper shows an approach to address this problem by presenting a system for testing and validating workflows within a specified parameter space. The system allows the definition of test cases (scenarios), each of which contains parameter states applied during workflow execution. The workflow engineer can define a set of scenarios for a workflow testing specific situation that are likely to occur during operation or are otherwise interesting corner cases, allowing automated tests and correction of faults before deployment of the workflow in production environments.
