The problem of scheduling a set of tasks on a multiprocessor architecture is addressed. Tasks are assumed to be sporadic with arbitrary deadlines and may migrate between processors. The execution of migrating tasks is controlled by a bandwidth reservation scheme so that schedulability is guaranteed by EDF. Task migration costs are taken into consideration. Results from experiments indicate that the proposed approach performs well in terms of schedulability.

Random scale-free overlay topologies provide a number of properties like for example high resilience against failures of random nodes, small (average) diameter as well as good expansion and congestion characteristics that make them interesting for the use in large-scale distributed systems. A number of these properties have been shown to be influenced by the exponent of their power law degree distribution. In this article, we present a distributed rewiring scheme that is suitable to effectuate random scale-free overlay topologies with an adjustable degree distribution exponent. The scheme uses a biased random walk strategy to sample new endpoints of edges being rewired and relies on an equilibrium model for scale-free networks. The bias of the random walk strategy can be tuned to produce random scale-free networks with arbitrary degree distribution exponents greater than two. We argue that the rewiring strategy can be implemented in a distributed fashion based on a node's information about its immediate neighbors. We present both analytical arguments as well as results that have been obtained in simulations of the proposed protocol.

User interaction has always been one of the most crucial points when evaluating the quality of experience of a service. Mobile television, especially when received over DVB-H or in other small bandwidth transmission environments such as UMTS networks, imposes some restrictions to this interaction, since switching from one channel to another requires an indefinite amount of time. It is therefore necessary to describe the technical foundations leading to these delays. Moreover, methods need to be developed to render channel switching times more appealing.

Initial deployment of secrets plays a crucial role in any security design, but especially in hardware constrained wireless sensor networks. Many key management schemes assume either manually pre-installed shared secrets or keys authenticated with the aid of out-of-band channels. While manually installing secret keys affects the practicability of the key deployment, out-of-band channels require additional interfaces of already hardware-limited wireless sensor nodes. In this work, we present a key deployment protocol that uses pair-wise ephemeral keys generated from physical layer information which subsequently enables an authenticated exchange of public keys. Hence, this work presents an elegant solution to the key deployment problem without requiring more capabilities than already available on common low-cost devices. To justify the feasibility of this solution, we implement and experimentally evaluate the proposed key deployment protocol using commodity wireless sensor motes.

The branch of complex system spans over a wide range of areas from physical and technological systems to social and biological systems. Hemodynamics is a branch of physiology and is a complex system which deals with the study of blood flow in arteries. Being a complex physical system, blood flow in a narrow stenosed artery is modeled as a two-phase fluid flow with the inner phase consisting of all the erythrocytes being represented by Herschel-Bulkey fluid model and the outer phase composed of only plasma being treated as Newtonian fluid. Perturbation method is employed to obtain an asymptotic solution to the resulting system of nonlinear partial differential equations. The expressions for the physiologically important flow quantities such as shear stress, velocity, plug core radius, flow rate and longitudinal impedance to flow are obtained. It is found that the velocity increases with the increase of the body acceleration, pressure gradient and the width of the peripheral layer thickness and the reverse behavior is noticed when the yield stress and depth of the stenosis increase. It is also observed that the flow rate decreases with the increase of the stenosis shape parameter, power law index and yield stress. Also, it is noted that the presence of body acceleration and peripheral layer influences the mean velocity by increasing its magnitude significantly in the arteries of different radii. © 2010 IEEE.

LEDBAT is a new congestion control algorithm which was proposed in an IETF draft in March 2009. LEDBAT's goal is to provide a less-than-best-effort data transport service, i.e. a LEDBAT flow should back-off in the presence of other competing flows (TCP flows in particular). Because of its intended friendliness to competing flows, LEDBAT has already been implemented in the popular Bittorrent client uTorrent. In this paper we present performance evaluation results for our Python implementation of LEDBAT. We ran tests both in emulated networks as well as in real world networks. One of the tests involved approximately 300 volunteers spread throughout the world.

Microarray technology allows for the simultaneous monitoring of thousands of genes expressions per sample. Unfortunately, the classification of these samples into distinct classes is often difficult as the number of genes (features) greatly exceeds the number of samples. Consequently, there is a need to investigate new, robust machine learning techniques capable of accurately classifying microarray data. In this paper, we present a coevolutionary learning classifier system based on feature set partitioning to classify gene expression data. A distributed implementation, which leverages Cloud computing technologies, is used to address the inherent computational costs of our model. The development and execution of this application was done using the Aneka middleware on the public Cloud (Amazon EC2) infrastructure. Experiments conducted using gene expression profiles demonstrates that the proposed implementation outperforms other well-known classifiers in terms of accuracy. Preliminary analysis into the impact of different Cloud setups on the performance of the classifier are also reported.

Cloud computing environments facilitate applications by providing virtualized resources that can be provisioned dynamically. However, users are charged on a pay-per-use basis. User applications may incur large data retrieval and execution costs when they are scheduled taking into account only the `execution time'. In addition to optimizing execution time, the cost arising from data transfers between resources as well as execution costs must also be taken into account. In this paper, we present a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based heuristic to schedule applications to cloud resources that takes into account both computation cost and data transmission cost. We experiment with a workflow application by varying its computation and communication costs. We compare the cost savings when using PSO and existing `Best Resource Selection' (BRS) algorithm. Our results show that PSO can achieve: (a) as much as 3 times cost savings as compared to BRS, and (b) good distribution of workload onto resources.

Advances in Cloud computing opens up many new possibilities for Internet applications developers. Previously, a main concern of Internet applications developers was deployment and hosting of applications, because it required acquisition of a server with a fixed capacity able to handle the expected application peak demand and the installation and maintenance of the whole software infrastructure of the platform supporting the application. Furthermore, server was underutilized because peak traffic happens only at specific times. With the advent of the Cloud, deployment and hosting became cheaper and easier with the use of pay-peruse flexible elastic infrastructure services offered by Cloud providers. Because several Cloud providers are available, each one offering different pricing models and located in different geographic regions, a new concern of application developers is selecting providers and data center locations for applications. However, there is a lack of tools that enable developers to evaluate requirements of large-scale Cloud applications in terms of geographic distribution of both computing servers and user workloads. To fill this gap in tools for evaluation and modeling of Cloud environments and applications, we propose CloudAnalyst. It was developed to simulate large-scale Cloud applications with the purpose of studying the behavior of such applications under various deployment configurations. CloudAnalyst helps developers with insights in how to distribute applications among Cloud infrastructures and value added services such as optimization of applications performance and providers incoming with the use of Service Brokers.
