The systematic conception of decentralized and self-adaptive software systems, as demanded for the run-time management of today’s distributed, multi-tier software architectures, is an active research area. Here, we discuss a coordination architecture that facilitates the enactment of externalized coordination models in Multi-agent systems (MAS). Coordination is configured by systemic models, i.e. structures of agent-behaviour interdependencies that denote the mutual influences of agent activities. The systematic, iterative application development is supported by a non-intrusive integration approach that enables developers to adjust application dynamics by complementing agent-based applications with systemic coordination models.

Efficient scheduling is a key concern for the effectual execution of performance driven Grid applications, such as workflows. Many list heuristics have been developed for scheduling workflows in centralized Grid environment. However, in this paper, we present a distributed list heuristic for decentralized scheduling of workflow applications in global Grids. The simulation results show that the proposed scheduling approach is scalable with respect to increased workload on the system.

In this paper, a reputation-based Grid workflow scheduling algorithm is proposed to counter the effect of inherent unreliability and temporal characteristics of computing resources in large scale, decentralized Grid overlays. The proposed approach builds upon structured peer-to-peer indexing and overlay networking techniques to create a scalable wide-area networking of Grid sites for supporting dependable scheduling of applications. The scheduling algorithm considers reliability of a Grid resource as a statistical property, which is globally computed in the decentralized Grid overlay based on dynamic feedbacks or reputation scores assigned by individual service consumers (Grid Resource Brokers). The proposed algorithm can dynamically adapt to changing resource conditions and offer significant performance gains as compared to traditional approaches in the event of unsuccessful job execution or resource failure. We evaluate and demonstrate the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation. The results show that our scheduling technique can reduce the makespan up to 50% and successfully isolate the failure-prone resources from the system.

The idea of the 3D Web as a global scale distributed Virtual Environment (DVE) currently is very popular and a lot of research work is done in this field. In the course of the HyperVerse project we have developed a two-tier Peer-To-Peer (P2P) architecture as basic infrastructure for a federated, open and scalable 3D Web. Our approach relies on a concept that incorporates a loosely-structured P2P network overlay of user clients and a highly-structured overlay that connects a federation of reliable server machines constituting a reliable backbone service. A central problem when intending to build a massive virtual online environment is how avatar interaction as well as tracking and provision of avatar positions can be realized in a globally scalable manner. This paper presents a hybrid avatar interaction scheme developed for HyperVerse that incorporates the user clients and the backbone service for avatar position tracking. The backbone is used as reliable fall-back service, while the avatar tracking is handled in a pure P2P fashion whenever possible. This way backbone overload is prevented in a self-organizing manner whenever client density tends to overburden the backbone infrastructure.

In membrane computing, P system has proved to be a rich framework for handling a variety of problems arising in different areas. In this note we examine an array-rewriting P system for rectangular picture array generation. This system makes use of Pure 2D context-free grammar rules in its regions. We obtain certain comparison results that bring out the suitability of this P system model in increasing the generative power of picture generation.

Agent mobility is the ability of an agent to migrate from one location to another across a network. Though conceptually relatively straightforward, in practice security of mobile agents is a challenge: from transport layer security to preservation of integrity in open environments. This paper discusses the security issues involved and proposes protocols for secure agent migration. Motivated by the structure and functioning of the living cell, a new computing model, called P system, was proposed in the area of membrane computing. Among several areas of application of P systems, one area is concerned with generation of picture array languages. Ceterchi et al. initially proposed array-rewriting P systems by extending the notion of string-rewriting P-systems. On the other hand a new theoretical model of grammatical picture generation called pure 2D context-free picture grammar (P2DCFPG) generating rectangular picture arrays of symbols has been introduced by Subramanian et al.. Here we consider P2DCFPG type of rules in array-rewriting P systems and examine the generating power of the resulting array P systems.

distributed system emulators provide a paramount platform for testing of network protocols and distributed applications in clusters and networks of workstations. However, to allow testers to benefit from these systems, it is necessary an efficient and automatic mapping of hundreds, or even thousands, of virtual nodes to physical hosts-and the mapping of the virtual links between guests to physical paths in the physical environment. In this paper we present a heuristic to map both virtual machines to hosts and virtual links between virtual machines to paths in the real system. We define the problem we are addressing, present the solution for it and evaluate it in different usage scenarios.

Client/Server-based DVE approaches incur scalability and load balancing problems while addressing massive number of users. In order to mitigate these problems P2P overlays are proposed for content provision and management issues instead. However, content provision and management in a distributed manner is much more complicated and requires an exhaustive study of overlay network properties. In order to investigate which kinds of overlay networks suit the requirements stated by DVEs at best, we have performed a comparative evaluation of the deterministic DHT-based Tapestry overlay and the nondeterministic prefix-tree-based P-Grid overlay considering their data location performance and construction cost. In this paper we discuss these evaluation results and exemplarily show how AoI management and content provision can be realized by using the P-Grid overlay.

Scientific applications like neuroscience data analysis are usually compute and data-intensive. With the use of globally distributed resources and suitable middlewares, we can achieve much shorter execution time, distribute compute and storage load, and add greater flexibility to the execution of these scientific applications than we could ever achieve in a single compute *** this paper, we present the processing of image registration (IR) for functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI) studies on global grids. We characterize the application, list its requirements and transform it to a workflow. We then execute the application on Gridpsila5000 platform and present extensive performance results. We show that the IR application can have 1) significantly improved makespan, 2) distribution of compute and storage load among resources used, and 3) flexibility when executing multiple times on global Grids.
