Cloud computing aims to power the next generation data centers and enables application service providers to lease data center capabilities for deploying applications depending on user QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud applications have different composition, configuration, and deployment requirements. Quantifying the performance of resource allocation policies and application scheduling algorithms at finer details in Cloud computing environments for different application and service models under varying load, energy performance (power consumption, heat dissipation), and system size is a challenging problem to tackle. To simplify this process, in this paper we propose CloudSim: an extensible simulation toolkit that enables modelling and simulation of Cloud computing environments. The CloudSim toolkit supports modelling and creation of one or more virtual machines (VMs) on a simulated node of a Data Center, jobs, and their mapping to suitable VMs. It also allows simulation of multiple Data Centers to enable a study on federation and associated policies for migration of VMs for reliability and automatic scaling of applications.

This work presents a study undertaken to characterise the FINISTERRAE supercomputer, one of the biggest NUMA systems in Europe. The main objective was to determine the performance effect of bus contention and cache coherency as well as the suitability of porting strategies regarding irregular codes in such a complex architecture. Results show that: (1) cores which share a socket can be considered as independent processors in this context; (2) for big data sizes, the effect of sharing a bus degrades the final performance but masks the cache coherency effects; (3) the NUMA factor (remote to local memory latency ratio) is an important factor on irregular codes and (4) the default kernel allocation policy is not optimal in this system. These results allow us to understand the behaviour of thread-to-core mappings and memory allocation policies.

In the area of membrane computing, a new computability model, called P system, which is a distributed, highly parallel theoretical computing model, was introduced by Paun, inspired from the cell structure and its functioning. There are several application areas of these P systems. Among these one area deals with the problem of picture array generation. Ceterchi et al. began a study on linking the two areas of membrane computing and picture grammars, which were not very much linked before, by relating P systems and array-rewriting grammars generating picture languages and proposing array-rewriting P systems. In this paper we propose a theoretical model of a P system, called Tile pasting P system, for generating two-dimensional patterns that are formed by gluing square tiles and study some of its properties.

The evolution of services market raises the need for automatic support for negotiating service use criteria. In order to reach an agreement, the negotiating parties need to develop a common understanding of the Quality of Service (QoS) terms which are part of the Service Level Agreement (SLA). The use of semantic annotations together with reasoning can increase the level of flexibility and automation in SLA management. A framework is presented for SLA negotiation allowing the two parties to use their own terminologies.

There have been some efforts to apply agent based approaches in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for different applica- tion scenarios in recent past. These efforts have met with varying levels of success so far. However, the efforts to assess the suitability of Foundation for Intelligent Physical Agents (FIPA) compliant multiagent solutions for WSNs are almost non-existent. In this paper we present a scenario from an industrial domain and asses the suitability of a FIPA compli- ant multiagent based solution for it. The scenario is based on a WSN deployment in an underground mine where it could be put to use for several purposes like hazardous gas plume detection and tracking, mine lighting control, Proximate En- vironment Monitoring (PEM), structural health monitoring of mine structure, to name a few. However, we only consider the PEM usage scenario in this paper. Copyright ACM 2007.

This article provides a comprehensive overview of state-of-the art research on molecular communication-a molecule-based communication paradigm for biological machines. Unlike current telecommunications based on electric or optical signals, molecular communication exploits biological molecules as information carriers. In molecular communication, senders of communication encode information onto molecules and transmit to the environment. The information coded molecules then propagate in the environment to reach receivers of communication, which capture and biochemically react to the molecules (i.e., decode the information from the information carrying molecules). Since biological molecules are compatible with biological systems, molecular communication is expected to impact medical domains such as human health monitoring where implant biological machines interact with biological cells through molecular communication. This article describes key concepts, architecture, potential applications of molecular communication as well as existing research on engineering molecular communication components and systems.

The trusted computing base of legacy applications can be reduced significantly by separating their security-critical parts into dedicated protection domains. As yet, paravir-tualization has been used to host the non-secure portion. The applicability of this approach is limited by the need of source code access. We show how to implement efficient virtual machines in a microkernel-based system enabling the reuse of arbitrary operatingsystems. We found that the performance is on par with other virtual machine implementations, while security-sensitive applications retain their small trusted computing base. In fact, the kernel growth is marginal (500 SLOC), other security-critical components are not affected. Copyright 2009 ACM.

In this talk, the theory of network calculus is discussed from the point of view: (1) how powerful it is in applications as well as (2) what fundamental challenges it still faces before it can be considered a similarly mature theory as the well-known classical queueing theory. To this end, we briefly review the basic concepts and mathematical foundations of network calculus, before we then show its applicability for the example of wireless sensor networks. The latter work culminated in the so-called sensor network calculus which is a customized and adequately extended set of methods based on the fundamental network calculus results enriched by the requirements stemming from the specific nature of wireless sensor networks. The lessons learned from this exercise are: on the one hand, network calculus provides already a rich and useful set of methods, but on the other hand, substantial work was still necessary to apply it to the particular context of wireless sensor networks (and to some degree still remains). Hence, in the second part of this talk, we outline some of the fundamental open issues with respect to the foundations of network calculus. We discuss current efforts to address these, although some of them are still completely open and thus constitute good opportunities for future research. Copyright 2008 ACM.
