Utility computing has been anticipated to be the next generation of computing usage. Users have the freedom to easily switch to any commercial computing service to complete jobs whenever the need arises and simply pay only on usage, without any investment costs. A commercial computing service however has certain objectives or goals that it aims to achieve. In this paper, we identify three essential objectives for a commercial computing service: (i) meet SLA, (ii) maintain reliability, and (iii) earn profit. This leads to the problem of whether a resource management policy implemented in the commercial computing service is able to meet the required objectives or not. So, we also develop two evaluation methods that are simple and intuitive: (i) separate and (ii) integrated risk analysis to analyze the effectiveness of resource management policies in achieving the required objectives. Evaluation results based on five policies successfully demonstrate the applicability of separate and integrated risk analysis to assess policies in terms of the required objectives. © 2007 IEEE.

Restoration or protection switching mechanisms are triggered by link or node failures to redirect traffic over backup paths. These paths then carry the normal and the backup traffic which may lead to overload and thereby to quality of service (QoS) violations, i.e. to excessive packet loss and delay. In this paper, we present a method to assess the potential overload of the links due to network failures. We calculate the complementary cumulative distribution function (CCDF) of the relative load for each link in the network. We discuss various performance measures that condense this information to a single value per link which is suitable for a link ranking. This helps to identify weak spots of the network and to appropriately upgrade the bandwidth of links although they are not overloaded during normal operation. We implemented the concept in a software tool which helps network providers to anticipate the potential overload in their networks prior to failures and intended modifications (new infrastructure, new routing, new customers,) and to take appropriate actions.

A Grid based e-Research platform is being developed for providing a simulation-based virtual reality environment for clinical management and therapy treatment. The development of this platform involves cross-disciplinary experts aiming at combining the state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis tools into clinical management system. These fluid dynamic studies support the physician and surgeon with recommendations for the possible range of treatment and operation techniques. The platform will consist of a cluster of computing nodes, a middleware (Grid management layer), internet accessible tomography data and CFD analysis tools, and a tailored graphical user interface (GUI) application for various experts. In future, this platform will provide the novel creation of a prototype virtual reality model environment that links each technical modular consisting of a consolidation system with flexible interface model for exchanging data efficiently. Furthermore, besides allowing expeditious sharing of data and analytical tools, it will also furnish a foundation for cross-disciplinary collaboration and will definitely foster further advancement of related biomechanics researches. © 2007, Australian computer Society, Inc.

Service-Oriented Architectures provide integration of interoperability for independent and loosely coupled services. Web services and the associated new standards such as WSRF are frequently used to realise such Service-Oriented Architectures. In such systems, autonomic principles of self-configuration, self-optimisation, self-healing and self-adapting are desirable to ease management and improve robustness. In this paper we focus on the extension of the self management and autonomic behaviour of a WSRF container connected by a structured P2P overlay network to monitor and rectify its QoS to satisfy its SLAs. The SLA plays an important role during two distinct phases in the life-cycle of a WSRF container Firstly during service deployment when services are assigned to containers in such a way as to minimise the threat of SLA violations, and secondly during maintenance when violations are detected and services are migrated to other containers to preserve QoS. In addition, as the architecture has been designed and built using standardised modem technologies and with high levels of transparency, conventional web services can be deployed with the addition of a SLA specification.

Over the past years Mobile Business has gained significant progress not only because of higher transfer rates as well as advanced processing power and memory capabilities of networks and mobile devices but also because of novel location-based mobile applications which raise many expectations in the mobile market. As a result network operators start to offer their services to 3rd party application providers which fosters the development of innovative applications. However, today mobile applications are forced to operate in the restricted environment of one network operator which is rather cumbersome for the development of novel location-based mobile applications that need to exchange location data between different network operators, over different countries. In this paper we discuss a system architecture aimed for location-based services that overcomes the aforementioned deficiencies. It uses transaction pseudonyms for the exchange of sensitive data by preserving users privacy and allows the development of novel applications that are operated by 3rd party application providers accessing different network services. We show that the management of identities and pseudonyms allows even roaming users access to different kinds of location-based services. © 2007, Australian computer Society, Inc.

The decomposition of a software system into a set of autonomous entities (agents) is a promising modeling approach to today’s distributed applications. Agent interplay in these sets of agents, so–called Multi–agent systems (MAS), enables the rise of complex, i. e. self–organizing and emergent system dynamics. Engineers revise agent implementations and face the challenge to comprehend, validate and finally predict the resulting system–level behaviors. In this paper we discuss the usage of simulation models to assist engineers in examining MAS dynamics. Particularly, we show how stochastic transition systems can be inferred from agent implementations. The resulting models allow engineers to explore the stochastic processes that may underly agent designs, facilitating both system design and validation as well as system optimization. We present tool support to assist model derivation from MAS implementations, following the established BDI agent architecture and exemplify its usage in a case study. © 2007 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. Testing and Debugging multi-agent systems (MAS) - which are inherently concurrent and distributed - is a challenging task. While complex application scenarios demand intelligent entities with autonomous reasoning capabilities, the applied reasoning mechanisms impair current approaches to validate MAS implementations. Reactive planning systems, namely the well-known Belief Desire Intention (BDI) architecture, have been successfully applied to implement these intelligent entities by means of goal directed agents. Despite testing and debugging, used to validate whether implementations behave as intended, are crucial to serious development efforts, only minor attention has been payed to corresponding tool support and testing procedures for BDIbased MAS. In this paper, we examine how the reasoning mechanism inside agent implementations can be checked and how static analysis of agent declarations can be used to visualize and check the overall communication structure in closed MAS. We present corresponding tool support, which relies on the definition of crosscutting concerns in BDI agents and enables both approaches to the Jadex Agent Platform. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The Licklider transmission protocol (LTP) is a delay-tolerant point-to-point protocol being developed by the Delay-Tolerant Networking Research Group (DTNRG). LTP-Transport is an extension to LTP that provides end-to-end services and which is designed to be a generic Delay-Tolerant Network (DTN) friendly transport protocol. We describe our network emulation based test setup for these protocols and our evaluation of their performance for a few simple DTN scenarios. In particular we compare LTP-T with the other protocol being developed by the DTNRG, the bundle protocol (BP). Our results show that LTP-T can outperform the BP in some cases, though, as an overlay network protocol, the BP is more flexible in general.

In this paper, we evaluate the performance of a P2P- based content distribution system in heterogeneous, wireless networks. The mobile users coordinate each other with cooperation strategies enabled by the multi-source download mechanism, as in eDonkey or BitTorrent. Due to the mobility, vertical handovers between different wireless access technologies are required which may result in transmission delays and IP address changes of the switching peer. Hence, connections among users have to be reestablished and downloading users are requeued at a providing peer's waiting queue. In detail, we investigate the impact of requeueing with each VHO as well as the use of mechanisms that preserve the IP address and connections beyond VHOs, like MobilelP. Another important phenomenon occurring with VHOs is the abrupt change of the available bandwidth, e.g., from a fast WLAN connection to a rather slow UMTS connection. We evaluate the download times for files by means of simulation while considering different load scenarios in today's and future network layouts of the B3G network. As a result of the performance evaluation, we derive a new time-based cooperation strategy that counters the impact of mobility. Instead of downloading individual blocks of a file, a user gets a time slot at a providing peer. We show that this leads to a significant performance gain.

Service discovery is vital in enabling interoperability of distributed service-based applications. In mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), discovery must cope not only with transient communication but also with an environment in which mobile nodes are autonomous and connectivity is opportunistic. The use of syntactic service interfaces in MANETs requires a priori agreement on interface names, limiting node autonomy and the range of provided services. A more flexible discovery mechanism can be provided with the use of ontologies. Since the use of a single ontology to describe all services also requires a priori agreement on a common semantic representation, a more realistic assumption is the use of heterogeneous ontologies. However, this assumption poses many technical challenges by requiring a mechanism to match the different ontologies and make provided services available to all nodes. This paper presents a model to support such semantic service discovery in MANETs. A core part of the model is the distributed approach to ontology matching and service discovery. We rely on the use of a novel gossip protocol to randomly disseminate ontology concepts, thereby creating a semantic overlay network. We present the gossip protocol and an evaluation demonstrating its scalability and discovery properties.
