In UMTS networks, HSDPA users share radio resources like transmit power and OSVF codes with QoS-users, which use dedicated channels as primary transport method. Several options for the resource allocation for HSDPA exist, which center around the question whether resources should be exclusively reserved for HSDPA, or whether the resources for the HSDPA should be adapted to the requirements of the QoS users. We investigate the impact of three radio resource allocation schemes on the HSDPA and on the dedicated channel performance by means of a time-dynamic simulation. The numerical results show the trade-offs between dedicated channel and HSDPA performance and the sensitivity of the system against power and code reservation parameters.

The proliferation of open Internet-scale service-oriented platforms based on standards, such as WSDL, SOAP and BPEL, enables the composition of independent Web services into new value-added services. Such service compositions define the information flows between autonomous and potentially heterogeneous services across the boundaries of independent provider organisations. The availability of individual services in such digital ecosystems is likely to be variable due to fluctuating usage load and resource limitations imposed by a service provider's infrastructure. This problem becomes more acute as the number of services in a composition increases. This paper presents a mediation model for improving the availability of composed services. The mediation model masks failures in a service composition by transparently selecting (and executing) an alternative composition at runtime. Service consumers use a common interface to a set of functionally equivalent service compositions while a selection mechanism identifies the most suitable (alternative) service composition. An evaluation of our implementation of the proposed mediation model demonstrates that the consumer perceived availability of value-added services can be improved significantly.

Self-organizing techniques have successfully been used to optimize software systems, such as optimization of route stability in ad hoc network routing and optimization of the use of storage space or processing power using load balancing. Existing self-organizing techniques typically focus on a single, usually implicitly specified, system goal and tune systems parameters towards optimally meeting that goal. In this paper, we consider optimization of large-scale multi-agent ubiquitous computing environments, such as urban traffic control. Applications in this class are typically required to optimize towards multiple goals simultaneously. Additionally, these multiple goals can potentially be conflicting, change over time, and apply to various parts of the system such as a single agent, a group of agents, or the system as a whole. In contrast to existing self-organizing systems in which agents are homogeneous to the extent that they are working towards a common goal, agents in these systems are heterogeneous in that they may have differing goals. Thus, existing self-organizing optimization techniques must be extended to deal with multiple goal optimization and the resulting heterogeneity of agents. In this paper we present a research agenda for extending collaborative reinforcement learning (CRL), an existing self-organizing optimization technique, to support multiple policy optimization.

Models for the downlink capacity of WCDMA systems with dedicated channels as specified in the UMTS Release '99 rely on the orthogonality factor for approximating the intra-cell interference due to multi-path propagation. This model is no longer applicable for the HSDPA as the performance of fast scheduling and adaptive modulation and coding depends on the small-scale fading effects. This leads to the problem on how to produce reliable statistics for the long-term system-level behavior when small-scale fading effects are not negligible. In this paper we introduce a general framework on how to perform time-efficient simulations that capture the effects of small-scale fading.

The demand for cheap broadband Internet for nomadic users has created a market for Internet sharing. Wi- Fi communities which allow their users to share their wired Internet connections have emerged and become increasingly popular. Organizations like FON promise to provide free wireless Internet access in many places. However, user authentication is the Achilles heel of these systems. A user that allows other community members to use its access point must expect to be held responsible for other users' actions. Moreover, these Wi-Fi sharing systems are often insecure which allows eavesdroppers to gather sensitive information on the wireless link. This work provides efficient, scalable, and secure access control for large Wi-Fi sharing systems. The host identity protocol (HIP) is used as a building block for a solution which supports strong user authentication as well as mobility support for nomadic users. In our presentation, we show the feasibility and effectiveness of this approach by demonstrating the PISA authentication protocol in action.

Advanced pervasive transportation services aim to improve the safety and efficiency of public and private transportation facilities, while reducing operating costs and improving the travel experience for drivers, passengers and other travellers. In order to achieve these goals, such services require access to context information from a myriad of distributed, heterogeneous intelligent transportation systems. A context management scheme that models information in a standard fashion is essential to support information sharing between individual systems, and higher-level information reasoning. This paper presents an ontology-based spatial context model, which takes a combined approach to modelling context information utilised by pervasive transportation services: the primary-context model facilitates interoperation across independent intelligent transportation systems, whereas the primary-context ontology enables pervasive transportation services to reason about shared context information and to react accordingly. The independently defined, distributed information is correlated based on its primary-context: location, time, identity, and quality of service. The primary-context model and ontology have been evaluated by modelling a car park system for a smart parking space locator service

Existing real-time research focuses on how to formulate. model and enforce timeliness guarantees for task sets whose correctness has a temporal aspect. However; the resulting systems often exhibit poor resource utilization due to the resource scheduler reserving more resources than required in order to ensure that admitted schedules can be satisfied under worst case conditions. Weakening the guarantees leads to the known concepts of firm and soft real-time tasks, butt we think the paradigm needs to be shifted further,: reifying efficient utilization. With Quality-Assuring Scheduling (QAS) we presented such an algorithm. However: its practical applicability is restricted to uniform and harmonic periods, due to its complexity for arbitrary periods. To overcome this limitation, we introduce Quality-Rate-Monotonic Scheduling (QRMS), which, although slightly more pessimistic, is less complex compared to QAS. Thee admission control is again based on a probabilistic model to ensure that a requested fraction of jobs is successfully executed. Thus the amount of missed deadlines can be externally controlled, even in sustained overload situations.

In UMTS networks, the transmit power for the HSDPA can be a large fraction of the total transmit power of a NodeB. We investigate the impact of three HSDPA transmit power allocation schemes on the performance of a UMTS system with dedicated channel users and HSDPA users. The continuous HSDPA power allocation scheme avoids large steps of the transmit power in order to prevent irregularities in the downlink power control of dedicated channels. In contrast, the traffic-aware scheme switches the HSDPA power on only if data has to be transmitted. The power-ramping scheme combines the continuous and the traffic-aware scheme. The simulation model considers the complete interference situation in the network and uses a novel model to calculate HSDPA bandwidths. The results quantify the performance loss with the continuous scheme caused by additional interference, and show that the power-ramping scheme leads to results close to the traffic-aware scheme.

Context-aware power management (CAPM) uses context (e.g., user location) likely to be available in future ubiquitous computing environments, to effectively power manage a building's energy consuming devices. The objective of CAPM is to minimise overall energy consumption while maintaining user-perceived device *** principal context required by CAPM is when the user is NOT USING and when the user is about to use a device. Accurately inferring this user context is challenging and there is a balance between how much energy additional context can save and how much it will cost energy wise. This paper presents results from a detailed user study that investigated the potential of such *** results show that CAPM is a hard problem. It is possible to get within 6% of the optimal policy, but policy performance is very dependent on user behaviour. Furthermore, adding more sensors to improve context inference can actually increase overall energy consumption.

The WiMAX technology based on the IEEE802.16 standard is currently the most prospective candidate for broadband wireless access networks. One of the key issues is the design of the MAC layer, in particular the multiple access scheme. The IEEE 802.16 standard specifies different scheduling services with individual mechanisms for accessing the channel on the uplink. The non-real-time polling service and the best-effort service mainly rely on a contention mechanism to submit bandwidth requests to the base station. These two services are currently used for all types of traffic with unknown characteristics, i.e. typically all traffic except for some special VoIP connection with known codec. In this paper, we evaluate and compare the performance of the contention mechanisms for fixed and mobile WiMAX.
