Travellers require information on individual transport systems when planning a journey. Many transport-rich urban environments contain numerous underlying transport infrastructures, offering a traveller various ways to complete the journey. This paper presents the smart traveller information service, a system designed to offer travellers an easy to use and efficient means of planning journeys in an otherwise complex multi-modal transport environment. The smart traveller information service bridges the coordination gap between the available transport systems (both public and private), and hides the complexity of the travel planning process from the user. This allows travellers to construct detailed journey plans without concerning themselves with the often heterogeneous and disjoint nature of the available transport facilities.

Location-based multi-player games are currently being pushed by the industry, one main factor being that highly-accurate positioning technologies like GPS as well as broadband mobile networks like UMTS are finally getting widespread. Nevertheless, generic frameworks for efficiently managing user locations are still missing, which strongly complicates game development. This paper presents TraX, a device-centric framework for Location- based Services, which especially supports proactive and multi-player services and thus perfectly matches the challenges mobile game development faces today. The suitability of TraX is evaluated by means of VsGolf, an actual location-based multi-player game, which has been developed and tested by students in only four days.

Ontologies form the cornerstone of the Semantic Web and are intended to help researchers to analyze and share knowledge, and as more ontologies are being introduced, it is difficult for users to find good ontologies related to their work. Therefore, tools for evaluating and ranking the ontologies are needed. In this paper, we present OntoQA, a tool that evaluates ontologies related to a certain set of terms and then ranks them according a set of metrics that captures different aspects of ontologies. Since there are no global criteria defining how a good ontology should be, OntoQA allows users to tune the ranking towards certain features of ontologies to suit the need of their applications. We also show the effectiveness of OntoQA in ranking ontologies by comparing its results to the ranking of other comparable approaches as well as expert users.

Effective scheduling is a key concern for the execution of performance driven grid applications. In this paper, we propose a dynamic critical path (DCP) based workflow scheduling algorithm that determines efficient mapping of tasks by calculating the critical path in the workflow task graph at every step. It assigns priority to a task in the critical path which is estimated to complete earlier. Using simulation, we have compared the performance of our proposed approach with other existing heuristic and meta-heuristic based scheduling strategies for different type and size of workflows. Our results demonstrate that DCP based approach can generate better schedule for most of the type of workflows irrespective of their size particularly when resource availability changes frequently.

In this paper, we present the design of Aneka, a .NET based service-oriented platform for desktop grid computing that provides: (i) a configurable service container hosting pluggable services for discovering, scheduling and balancing various types of workloads and (ii) a flexible and extensible framework/API supporting various programming models including threading, batch processing, MPI and dataflow. Users and developers can easily use different programming models and the services provided by the container to run their applications over desktop Grids managed by Aneka. We present the implementation of both the essential and advanced services within the platform. We evaluate the system with applications using the grid task and dataflow models on top of the infrastructure and conclude with some future directions of the current system.

Utility computing has been anticipated to be the next generation of computing usage. Users have the freedom to easily switch to any commercial computing service to complete jobs whenever the need arises and simply pay only on usage, without any investment costs. A commercial computing service however has certain objectives or goals that it aims to achieve. In this paper, we identify three essential objectives for a commercial computing service: (i) meet SLA, (ii) maintain reliability, and (iii) earn profit. This leads to the problem of whether a resource management policy implemented in the commercial computing service is able to meet the required objectives or not. So, we also develop two evaluation methods that are simple and intuitive: (i) separate and (ii) integrated risk analysis to analyze the effectiveness of resource management policies in achieving the required objectives. Evaluation results based on five policies successfully demonstrate the applicability of separate and integrated risk analysis to assess policies in terms of the required objectives.

Image filtering is the use of computer graphics algorithms to enhance the quality of digital images or to extract information about their content. However rendering very large size digital images on a single machine is a performance bottleneck. To address this we propose parallelising this application on a desktop Grid environment. For parallelizing this application we use the Alchemi Desktop Grid environment and the resulting framework is referred to as *** allows the parallel execution of linear digital filters algorithms on images. We observed acceptable speed up as a result of parallelising filtering operation through ImageGrid. We run the tests on different data sets by varying the dimension of the images and the complexity of the filters. Results demonstrate potential of Grid computing for desktop applications and that the speed up obtained is more consistent for large images and complex filters.

Since Multi-Agent systems (MAS) are composed of sets of (inter-)acting autonomous and pro-active agents, they provide suitable concepts to the construction of self- organizing processes, promising robust and adaptive system behaviors. An examination of current software-engineering approaches to self-organizing MAS identified a lack of requirement engineering approaches, established in general- purpose engineering methodologies. As self-organizing dynamics are typically utilized to enforce continuous MAS adjustment we discuss how expectations on MAS adaptivity can be expressed and validated, considering both the intended system configurations as well as the system dynamics that steer system (re-)configuration. We argue that self-organizing MAS development typically intends recurring pattern of system dynamics and exemplify their specification and validation, transferring requirements engineering practices to self-organizing MAS development.

This paper proposes a first step into a common solution, where combined and extended interests will hopefully allow us to surpass this threshold. While there are still some open issues, we hope to not only propose a basic working mechanism but also provide fresh ideas to start thinking off the beaten path. Our main contribution is to create a lightweight, end-to-end binding between path and service, which is then used as a basis to associate further attributes and mechanisms to this binding.

Risk management is essential regarding the maintenance of a company's business processes. The ability of companies to prevent risks as well as to respond quickly and appropriately to emerging threats is increasingly becoming a crucial success factor. In order to cope with these challenges, companies constitute business process and risk management approaches. Traditional business process management focuses on the economical optimization of processes. Apart from that, risk management provides the design of robust business processes to strengthen the resilience of daily business. Both domains aim at improving business performance, but they approach this goal from a different view on the understanding of improvement. Due to the fact that optimizing recommendations of business process management and risk management may be contradictory, we propose one unified method which integrates both points of views to enable risk-aware business process management and optimization. In this paper, we introduce the ROPE (Risk-Oriented Process Evaluation) methodology which combines capabilities of business process management, risk management and business continuity management to support the holistic evaluation of business processes not only regarding their economic efficiency but also their robustness and security. The basis for this combination is the refinement of business process activities into four atomic elements (Conditions, Actions, Resources and Environments) and a process-oriented way of modeling threats, preventive and reactive counter measures as well as recovery measures. In this paper we demonstrate how risk-aware business process management and simulation can be enabled through the application of the ROPE methodology.
