The Java messaging service (JMS) is a middleware-oriented messaging technology working according to the publish/subscribe principle. If subscribers install filter rules on the JMS server, JMS can be used as a message routing platform, but it is not clear whether its message throughput is sufficiently high to support large-scale systems. In this paper we investigate the capacity of the Websphere Message Queue JMS server. In contrast to other studies, we focus on the message throughput in the presence of filters and show that filtering reduces the performance significantly. We also present a model that describes the service time for a single message depending on the number of installed filters and validate it by measurements. This model helps to calculate the system throughput for specific application scenarios. © 2006 IEEE.

Healthcare professionals working in highly dynamic hospital environments typically have correspondingly dynamic schedules that are difficult to manage. Emergent tasks and shifting priorities result in existing schedules becoming obsolete. Pervasive computing technology can aid healthcare professionals in organising daily activities by exploiting knowledge of planned and emerging tasks, of patients and colleagues, and of the general state of the working environment. The Hermes software framework at Trinity College Dublin supports the development of mobile applications for human activity management that exploits such environmental knowledge. Supported applications are based on the concept of a trail. This paper describes the Hermes framework and illustrates how it can be used to implement applications that can automatically reorganise the schedules of healthcare workers based on sensed changes in their environment. © 2007 IEEE.

Mobile context-aware applications require sources of context information to drive more appropriate behavior. One valuable source of context information is context that already exists. Unfortunately, the situation an application is currently in and the situation in which a piece of context is initially used may differ by properties such as time and location. The further an application is away from the situation in which a piece of information was initially used, the more additional details it needs to be able to reuse it. When transacting and interacting through open computer networks, traditional methods used in the physical world for establishing trust can no longer be used. Creating virtual network substitutes with which people, organisations and software agents can derive trust in other parties requires computerised analysis of the underlying trust networks. This article describes an approach to trust network analysis using subjective logic (TNA-SL), that consists of the three following elements. Firstly it uses a concise notation with which trust transitivity and parallel combination of trust paths can be expressed. Secondly it defines a method for simplifying complex trust networks so that they can be expressed in this concise form. Finally it allows trust measures to be expressed as beliefs, so that derived trust can be automatically and securely computed with subjective logic. We compare our approach with trust derivation algorithms that are based on normalisation such as PageRank and EigenTrust. We also provide a numerical example to illustrates how TNA-SL can be applied. © 2006 - IOS Press and the authors. All rights reserved.

With the ongoing growth of the Internet, a reliable communications infrastructure becomes more and more important. To monitor large networks, asynchronous notifications are needed to inform management systems about critical events. The SNMP framework provides Traps which have been used for monitoring successfully for many years. However, due to shortcomings of SNMP, XML and Web services get more and more attention from the network management community. If the new technologies should replace the existing ones, they must also provide asynchronous notifications. In this paper, we describe notification solutions in traditional as well as in new management frameworks. Moreover, we compare them with a simple approach based on Web services we have implemented.

Vertical handovers (VHO) are expected to be a key feature in Beyond 3G (B3G) networks. This paper presents a Pastry-based P2P overlay network for supporting vertical handover in B3G networks. The P2P overlay is used to quickly locate attachment points (APs) for mobile entities and to rapidly retrieve the configuration and coverage information of these APs. The advantage of the P2P-based solution is its distributed nature, its scalability, and its self-organizing capability. © 2006 IEEE.

Message Passing is a popular mechanism used to enable inter-process communication in parallel and distributed computing. Many complex scientific and engineering applications that are executed on clusters have been developed based on this communication model. Due to the huge amount of computing power being wasted in desktops, there is an increasing interest in using these computers to execute complex applications. However, most of the current middleware systems are aimed at executing only embarrassingly parallel applications, i.e. with no inter-process communication. Moreover, most existing middleware systems are based on Linux. Nevertheless, it is well-known that the desktop machines in the world are predominantly based on the Windows operating system. Hence, in this work we present the design implementation and evaluation performance of a Windows-based implementation of two message passing models, Message Passing Interface (MPI) and Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP), over the Alchemi Grid computing framework. © 2006 ACM.

Classical Location-based Services (LBSs) automatically derive the current location of known persons in order to select, compile, or filter location-dependent information and present it to their users. Zone services work the other way round: they estimate the amount of persons which are located in a given geographic zone and optionally obtain personal information from them in order to compile statistical information like the number of persons staying in a zone, their average age, and marital status. Zone services address a broad field of applications, ranging from emergency services to mobile marketing and research. This paper presents an approach for realizing such services by using broadcast technologies in combination with terminal-based positioning like GPS. Because data collected in this way always runs the risk of being misused, the paper also presents a framework that allows observed persons to define and enforce their privacy preferences. © 2006 IEEE.

Along with the increasing diversity of educational markup languages there is a strong need for flexible integration of such content into learning platforms. Therefore, we have identified four basic mechanisms: plain linking from the platform to external content, conversion of content into the platforms native format, and service-based invocation of external content as well as specific functionality related to it. The advent of service-oriented Grid computing has resulted in the need for Grid resources such as clusters to enforce user-specific service needs and expectations. Service Level Agreements (SLAs) define conditions which a cluster needs to fulfill for various jobs. An example of SLA requirement is the deadline by which a job has to be completed. In addition, these clusters implement job admission control so that overall service performance does not deteriorate due to accepting exceeding amount of jobs. However, their effectiveness is highly dependent on accurate runtime estimates of jobs. This paper thus examines the adverse impact of inaccurate runtime estimates for deadline constrained job admission control in clusters using the Earliest Deadline First (EDF) strategy and a deadline-based proportional processor share strategy called Libra. Simulation results show that an enhancement called LibraRisk can manage the risk of inaccurate runtime estimates better than EDF and Libra by considering the risk of deadline delay. © 2006 IEEE.
