With the ongoing growth of the Internet, a reliable communications infrastructure becomes more and more important. To monitor large networks, asynchronous notifications are needed to inform management systems about critical events. The SNMP framework provides Traps which have been used for monitoring successfully for many years. However, due to shortcomings of SNMP, XML and Web services get more and more attention from the network management community. If the new technologies should replace the existing ones, they must also provide asynchronous notifications. In this paper, we describe notification solutions in traditional as well as in new management frameworks. Moreover, we compare them with a simple approach based on Web services we have implemented.

The Java messaging service (JMS) is a means to organize communication among distributed applications according to the publish/subscribe principle. If the subscribers install filter rules on the JMS server, JMS can be used as a message routing platform, but it is not clear whether its message throughput is sufficiently high to support large-scale systems. In this paper, we investigate the capacity of the high performance JMS server implementation by Fiorano. In contrast to other studies, we focus on the message throughput in the presence of filters and show that filtering reduces the performance significantly. We also present a model that describes the service time for a single message depending on the number of installed filters and validate it by measurements. This model helps to forecast the system throughput for specific application scenarios.

We propose and experiment a Social Networking Service (SNS) for local communities for tsunami disaster control. It is an easy-to-use GIS-based system with powerful GIS analysis capabilities. One of the features of the system is resident participation. The GIS layer structure proposed in this paper nicely supports this user participation. The system architecture and the use of the system for tsunami disaster control are discussed. We report ongoing developments in Hachinohe-City, Japan.
