MLMO-HSM: Multi-label Multi-output Hybrid Sequential Model for multi-resident smart home activity recognition

Smart home automation is protective and preventive measures that are taken to monitor elderly people in a non-intrusive manner using simple and pervasive sensors termed Ambient Assistive Living. The smart home produces a large volume of sensor activations to predict an elder’s health status to improve the quality of life and independent living. Machine learning techniques are very familiar and popular in recognizing single resident activities using such a sensor reading. However, multi-resident activities are more complex, and no correlation exists between sensor readings and activities. Recently deep learning and graphical models have been proposed to solve this problem, but it consumes more time to train the model. Moreover, models are primarily executed in parallel, or multi-resident activity recognition has been converted to single for classifying events. This paper proposes a Multi-label Multi-output Hybrid Sequential Model (MLMO-HSM), a feature engineering approach with a hybrid sequential model to recognize the multi-resident activities concurrently in the shortest time. Experimentation has been performed with various machine learning, graphical and deep learning models at the different sizes of the ARAS dataset to validate the efficiency of the proposed model in terms of activity recognition and computation time. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

A geometric-approach based Combinatorial Transformative Scalogram analysis for multiclass identification of pathologies in a voice signal

Many researchers have preferred non-invasive techniques for recognizing the exact type of physiological abnormality in the vocal tract by training machine learning algorithms with feature descriptors extracted from the voice signal. However, until now, most techniques have been limited to classifying whether a voice is normal or abnormal. It is crucial that the trained Artificial Intelligence (AI) be able to identify the exact pathology associated with voice for implementation in a realistic environment. Another issue is the need to suppress the ambient noise that could be mixed up with the spectra of the voice. Current work proposes a robust, less time-consuming and non-invasive technique for the identification of pathology associated with a laryngeal voice signal. More specifically, a two-stage signal filtering approach that encompasses a score-based geometric approach and a glottal inverse filtering method is applied to the input voice signal. The aim here is to estimate the noise spectra, to regenerate a clean signal and finally to deliver a completely fundamental glottal flow-derived signal. For the next stage, clean glottal derivative signals are used in the formation of a novel fused-scalogram which is currently referred to as the "Combinatorial Transformative Scalogram (CTS)." The CTS is a time-frequency domain plot which is a combination of two time-frequency scalograms. There is a thorough investigation of the performance of the two individual scalograms as well as that of the CTS *** classification metrics are used to investigate performance, which are: sensitivity, mean accuracy, error, precision, false positive rate, specificity, Cohen’s kappa, Matthews Correlation Coefficient, and F1 score. Implementation of the VOice ICar fEDerico II (VOICED) standard database provided the highest mean accuracy of 94.12% with a sensitivity of 93.85% and a specificity of 97.96% against other existing techniques. Sensor networks are often deployed outdoors and are more susceptible to various attacks. In order to protect communication between nodes, scholars have proposed key management schemes. The most popular among them is the key pre-distribution scheme. This scheme has the following contradiction: in order to improve security, the number of keys pre-distributed to nodes should be minimized as much as possible. However, as the number of pre-distribution keys decreases, the network may no longer be securely connected, resulting in wastage of nodes. In this paper, we propose a new key establishment method to address this issue. Analysis and simulation show that the proposed scheme can reduce the number of pre-distribution keys in the original schemes while ensuring secure network connectivity. © 2014 IEEE.

The conventional approach to scalp inspection in the hairdressing industry relies on manually interpreting scalp symptom images. Hairdressers provide treatments based on visual assessment, leading to potential inaccuracies and misjudgments. To address these shortcomings, this article proposes a novel multimodal deep learning-based scalp inspection and diagnosis system. The proposed system employs various artificial intelligence (AI) object recognition modules, such as single-shot multibox detector (SSD)-MobileNetV2, SSD-InceptionV2, Faster region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN)-InceptionV2, and Faster R-CNN-Inception-ResNetV2-Atrous (2). These modules form a diverse scalp symptom recognition module integrated into an AI recognition server. This study included nine scalp symptoms, encompassing four primary conditions (dandruff, hair loss, gray hair, and oily hair), as well as five special conditions (folliculitis, chemical residue, mold, fungi, fungus, and psoriasis). The efficiency of the proposed system is evaluated through experiments, and adjustments are made to the neural network architecture to achieve optimal performance across diverse symptoms. The experimental results showed that Faster-R-CNN-Inception-ResNetV2-Atrous (2) excels in recognizing chemical residue and oily hair symptoms (accuracies of 89.33% and 87.75%, respectively);Faster-R-CNN-Inception-ResNetV2-Atrous (4) outperforms in recognizing dandruff, folliculitis, fungal, and psoriasis symptoms (accuracies ranging from 88.77% to 99.72%);and Faster-R-CNN-Inception-ResNetV2-Atrous (4) is the best-performing method overall. © 2021 IEEE.

Environmental sound classification(ESC)involves the process of distinguishing an audio stream associated with numerous environmental *** common aspects such as the framework difference,overlapping of different sound events,and the presence of various sound sources during recording make the ESC task much more complicated and *** research is to propose a deep learning model to improve the recognition rate of environmental sounds and reduce the model training time under limited computation *** this research,the performance of transformer and convolutional neural networks(CNN)are *** audio features,chromagram,Mel-spectrogram,tonnetz,Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients(MFCCs),delta MFCCs,delta-delta MFCCs and spectral contrast,are extracted fromtheUrbanSound8K,ESC-50,and ESC-10,***,this research also employed three data enhancement methods,namely,white noise,pitch tuning,and time stretch to reduce the risk of overfitting issue due to the limited audio *** evaluation of various experiments demonstrates that the best performance was achieved by the proposed transformer model using seven audio features on enhanced *** UrbanSound8K,ESC-50,and ESC-10,the highest attained accuracies are 0.98,0.94,and 0.97 *** experimental results reveal that the proposed technique can achieve the best performance for ESC problems.

Fog computing has recently developed as a new paradigm with the aim of addressing time-sensitive applications better than with cloud computing by placing and processing tasks in close proximity to the data ***,the majority of the fog nodes in this environment are geographically scattered with resources that are limited in terms of capabilities compared to cloud nodes,thus making the application placement problem more complex than that in cloud *** approach for cost-efficient application placement in fog-cloud computing environments that combines the benefits of both fog and cloud computing to optimize the placement of applications and services while minimizing *** approach is particularly relevant in scenarios where latency,resource constraints,and cost considerations are crucial factors for the deployment of *** this study,we propose a hybrid approach that combines a genetic algorithm(GA)with the Flamingo Search Algorithm(FSA)to place application modules while minimizing *** consider four cost-types for application deployment:Computation,communication,energy consumption,and *** proposed hybrid approach is called GA-FSA and is designed to place the application modules considering the deadline of the application and deploy them appropriately to fog or cloud nodes to curtail the overall cost of the *** extensive simulation is conducted to assess the performance of the proposed approach compared to other state-of-the-art *** results demonstrate that GA-FSA approach is superior to the other approaches with respect to task guarantee ratio(TGR)and total cost.

This study presents an overview on intelligent reflecting surface(IRS)-enabled sensing and communication for the forthcoming sixth-generation(6G) wireless networks, in which IRSs are strategically deployed to proactively reconfigure wireless environments to improve both sensing and communication(S&C) performance. First, we exploit a single IRS to enable wireless sensing in the base station's(BS's) non-line-of-sight(NLoS) area. In particular, we present three IRS-enabled NLoS target sensing architectures with fully-passive, semi-passive, and active IRSs, respectively. We compare their pros and cons by analyzing the fundamental sensing performance limits for target detection and parameter estimation. Next, we consider a single IRS to facilitate integrated sensing and communication(ISAC), in which the transmit signals at the BS are used for achieving both S&C functionalities, aided by the IRS through reflective beamforming. We present joint transmit signal and receiver processing designs for realizing efficient ISAC, and jointly optimize the transmit beamforming at the BS and reflective beamforming at the IRS to balance the fundamental performance tradeoff between S&C. Furthermore, we discuss multi-IRS networked ISAC, by particularly focusing on multi-IRS-enabled multi-link ISAC, multi-region ISAC, and ISAC signal routing, respectively. Finally, we highlight various promising research topics in this area to motivate future work.

Subchannel selection methods for 3GPP C-V2X networks by considering vehicular mobility

The 3GPP vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology is a key solution to provide communication services for applications of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). According to the C-V2X specification, vehicles are allowed to communicate with each other without the help of cellular networks and can select subchannels (i.e. radio resources) by themselves. However, this design will induce subchannel collisions because of the mobility of vehicles. This work aims to relieve the aforementioned problem. We propose a cooperative subchannel selection (CoSS) scheme and a localized subchannel selection (LoSS) scheme, which consider vehicular mobility to prevent subchannel collisions. Based on the collected information, CoSS predicts possible subchannel collisions due to vehicles’ location changes. On the other hand, LoSS avoids subchannel collisions by organizing the usage of subchannels based on vehicles’ relative moving speeds. The simulation results indicate that the proposed schemes can effectively reduce subchannel collision ratio and increase packet delivery ratio for the network. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

With the advent of the information age, data storage has not only developed from paper information systems to electronic information system storage, but has also extended to cloud database storage methods. To date, we can see the application of big data and cloud in various fields and levels, making induction, arrangement, transmission, and exchange of data easier and faster. The electronic and systematisation of patient medical records in the medical environment is an example. The use of electronic medical records can help improve the quality of medical care, reduce duplication of treatment, and reduce the waste of examination resources. It has many advantages, but also many risks. Medical institutions may abuse electronic medical data without the consent of patients, leading to the leakage of patient privacy data and causing serious social impact. Therefore, this study proposes a medical record exchange and sharing mechanism based on the Hyperledger blockchain architecture combined with proxy reencryption. When pharmacists need to obtain medical records for related research, patients can decide whether to share medical records, and hospitals can also revoke pharmacist access rights at any time to achieve more private, secure, and convenient sharing of medical records. The proposed scheme meets various blockchain security requirements and the BAN (Burrows–Abadi–Needham) logic proof model (Burrows–Abadi–Needham) is applied to assess the correctness of the proposed scheme.
