Oxidative stress is a pathological hallmark of neurodegenerative tauopathic disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease-related dementia, which are characterized by altered forms of the microtubule-associated protein (MAP) tau. MAP tau is a key protein in stabilizing the microtubule architecture that regulates neuron morphology and synaptic strength. When MAP tau is degraded in tauopathic disorders, neuron dysfunction results. The precise role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the tauopathic disease process, however, is poorly understood. Classically, mitochondrial dysfunction has been viewed as the major source of oxidative stress and has been shown to precede tau and amyloid pathology in various dementias, but the exact mechanisms are not clear. It is known that the production of ROS by mitochondria can result in ultraweak photon emission (UPE) within cells. While of low intensity, surrounding proteins within the cytosol can still absorb these energetic photons via aromatic amino acids (e.g., tryptophan and tyrosine). One likely absorber of these photons is the microtubule cytoskeleton, as it forms a vast network spanning neurons, is highly co-localized with mitochondria, and shows a high density of aromatic amino acids. Functional microtubule networks may traffic this ROS-generated endogenous photon energy for cellular signaling, or they may serve as dissipaters/conduits of such energy to protect the cell from potentially harmful effects. Experimentally, after in vitro exposure to exogenous photons, microtubules have been shown to reorient and reorganize in a dose-dependent manner with the greatest effect being observed around 280 nm, in the tryptophan and tyrosine absorption range. The study of asthma and other complex diseases has proven to be a "moving target" for researchers due to its complex aetiology, difficulty in definition, and immeasurable environmental effects. A large number of studies regarding the contribution of both genetic and environmental factors often result in contradictory results, in part due to the highly heterogeneous nature of asthma. Recent literature has focused on the epigenetic signatures of asthma caused by environmental factors, highlighting the importance of environment. However, unlike the genetic techniques, environmental assessment still lacks accuracy. A plausible solution for this problem would be an individual-based environmental exposure assessment, relying on new technologies such as personal real-time environmental sensors. This could prove to enable the assessment of the whole environmental exposure - or exposome - matching in terms of precision the genome that is emphasized in most studies so far. In addition, the measurement of the whole array of biological molecules, in response to the environment action, could help understand the context of the disease. The current perspective comprises a beyond-genetics integrated vision of omics technology coupled with real-time environmental measures targeting to enhance our comprehension of the disease genesis. © 2015 Berenguer.

With the development of Chinese microblog and E-commerce, the messages with opinions and intents expressed by users would have a significant impact on many domains. In this paper, we study on how to identify the consumption intent in Chinese microblog. We use text classification based on NB, SVM and EM-based transfer learning algorithm to identify consumption intent. And we compare NB, SVM and EM algorithm methods. Due to the freedom and irregular of the microblog posts, we consider more about preprocessing microblog raw data, which bring new challenges to the traditional text classification methods. © 2015 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

The volume and diversity of data in biomedical research have been rapidly increasing in recent years. While such data hold significant promise for accelerating discovery, their use entails many challenges including: the need for adequate computational infrastructure, secure processes for data sharing and access, tools that allow researchers to find and integrate diverse datasets, and standardized methods of analysis. These are just some elements of a complex ecosystem that needs to be built to support the rapid accumulation of these data. The NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) initiative aims to facilitate digitally enabled biomedical research. Within the BD2K framework, the Commons initiative is intended to establish a virtual environment that will facilitate the use, interoperability, and discoverability of shared digital objects used for research. The BD2K Commons Framework Pilots Working Group (CFPWG) was established to clarify goals and work on pilot projects that address existing gaps toward realizing the vision of the BD2K Commons. This report reviews highlights from a two-day meeting involving the BD2K CFPWG to provide insights on trends and considerations in advancing Big Data science for biomedical research in the United States. © 2017 Elsevier Inc.

Personal monitoring systems can offer effective solutions for human health and performance. These systems require sampling and significant processing on multiple streams of physiological signals. The processing typically consists of feature extraction, data fusion, and classification stages that require a large number of digital signal processing and machine learning kernels. In order to be functional, however, the processing architecture needs to be low-power and have a low-area footprint. In this paper we present such a design for a personalized stress monitoring system with a flexible, multi-modal design. Various physiological and behavioral features were explored to maximize detection accuracy with both SVM and KNN machine learning classifiers. Among 17 different features from 5 sensors, heart rate and accelerometer features were found to have the highest classification accuracy to detect stress in the given dataset. While KNN classifier accuracy outperforms by 2%, it requires significantly larger memory and computation compared to the SVM classifier. Therefore, we chose the SVM classifier for hardware implementation. The post-layout implementation results in 130 nm CMOS technology show that the SVM processor occupies 0.2 mm~2 and dissipates 20.2 mW at 125 MHz. The proposed processor takes 800 ns to classify each input and consumes 16.2 nJ. The overall classification accuracy of this system is 96%.

Drawing annotations on shared live video has been investigated as a tool for remote collaboration. However, if a local user changes the viewpoint of a shared live video while a remote user is drawing an annotation, the annotation is projected and drawn at wrong place. Prior work suggested manually freezing the video while annotating to solve the issue, but this needs additional user input. We introduce a solution that automatically freezes the video, and present the results of a user study comparing it with manual freeze and no freeze conditions. Auto-freeze was most preferred by both remote and local participants who felt it best solved the issue of annotations appearing in the wrong place. With auto-freeze, remote users were able to draw annotations quicker, while the local users were able to understand the annotations clearer.

Introduction Serious games (SGs) have been used to increase the level of physical activity, balance training and muscle strength in older people with frailty syndrome (FS). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of an exercise program with a SG developed for the rehabilitation of older people. Materials and methods In this quasi-experimental study, 24 institutionalized older people with average (SD) age of 80.9 (5.6) years old (16 women) were distributed into two groups (experimental and control). The SG exercise program was conducted twice a week for three months (20 sessions of 15 to 25 minutes). The participants were evaluated in terms of mobility with the Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), balance with the Functional Reach Test (FRT), and strength with dynamometer measurements of hand-grip, upper and lower limbs. Results Only the experimental group showed significant changes in post-test measurements regarding functional mobility (TUG: d = −1.3, p = 10⁻⁴), balance (FRT: d = 1.2, p = 0.003), and upper and lower limb strengths (d = [0.2–0.6], p = [0.04–0.01]). Discussion The results are in line with previous studies suggesting that the SG could integrate the therapeutic repertoire to increase the level of physical activity. Moreover, physical stimulation of older people with SGs is a viable and interesting strategy to involve them in the rehabilitation process. Conclusions The exercise program with the SG resulted in significant improvements in terms of balance, mobility and strength of large muscle groups of older people with FS. This SG has a potential for home or institutional use, since it is relatively safe, allows the training of important functions in older people and could help the stimulation and the monitoring of patients in treatment by the health team. © 2016 Elsevier Masson SAS

Globalization of markets means that interactive systems need to be usable and provide positive user experience (UX) to users in many different cultures. There is an increasing realization that systems may need to be localized to different cultures, but less realization that methods used to work with users also need to be localized. We present two case studies which investigate cultural differences in users’ interpretation of and reactions to methods used to elicit usability and UX information. The first case study investigated the use of photos and sketches with Nigerian and Anglo-Celtic participants, the second investigated the use of three different question types, Likert items, sentence completion questions and open-ended questions with Chinese and British participants. Conclusions are drawn for conducting crosscultural user research. © Springer India 2015.
