Bi-linear matrix-variate analyses, integrative hypothesis tests, and case-control studies

We pursue a threefold purpose in this paper. First, we suggest a Kullback-Leibler formulation for developing a statistics and making discriminative projection for case-control studies, based on which existing typical methods are revisited and then further extended to matrix-variate counterparts. Second, we propose a bi-linear matrix form, based on which multivariate discriminative analysis and logistic, Cox, and linear mixed regression are extended into their matrix-variate counterparts. Third, we systematically address the necessity, feasibility, and methodology of integrative hypothesis tests (IHT) from the complementarity of model-based test and boundary-based test (BBT) in the data (D)-space, statistics (S)-space, and probability (P)-space. We elaborate four IHT components (modelling, comparison, classification, and assurance) and summarise four IHT types in the D-space. Then, we extend the existing efforts on multivariate tests to BBTs in the S-space. Particularly, we extend the classic univariate one-tail z-test to the multivariate ones, which is then applied to a multivariate sample-pairing delta (SPD) test for detecting a collective inclining dominance. Also, we propose a SPD discriminative analysis that extends this SPD test. Moreover, we propose a multivariate bi-test that tests the classic null and also a null about the inference reliability due to test space complexity, including a further development of Fisher combination. Finally, we suggest possible applications for gene expression biomarkers and exome-sequencing-based joint single-nucleotide variant (SNV) detection.

After a short tutorial on the fundamentals of Bayes approaches and Bayesian Ying-Yang (BYY) harmony learning, this paper introduces new progresses. A generic information harmonising dynamics of BYY harmony learning is proposed with the help of a Lagrange variety preservation principle, which provides Lagrange-like implementations of Ying-Yang alternative nonlocal search for various learning tasks and unifies attention, detection, problem-solving, adaptation, learning and model selection from an information harmonising perspective. In this framework, new algorithms are developed to implement Ying-Yang alternative nonlocal search for learning Gaussian mixture and several typical exemplars of linear matrix system, including factor analysis (FA), mixture of local FA, binary FA, nonGaussian FA, de-noised Gaussian mixture, sparse multivariate regression, temporal FA and temporal binary FA, as well as a generalised bilinear matrix system that covers not only these linear models but also manifold learning, gene regulatory networks and the generalised linear mixed model. These algorithms are featured with a favourable nature of automatic model selection and a unified formulation in performing unsupervised learning and semi-supervised learning. Also, we propose a principle of preserving multiple convex combinations, which leads alternative search algorithms. Finally, we provide a chronological outline of the history of BYY learning studies.

In the recent years, the P2P file sharing systems have adopted rating systems in the hope to stop the propagation of bad files. In a rating system, users rate files after downloading and a file with positive feedback is considered a good file. However, a dishonest rater can undermine the rating system by giving positive rating to bad files and negative rating to good files. In this paper, we design two filters based on probabilistic models such that the good files with negative feedback are not completely kept out of the system. The first filter is based on the binomial distribution of the ratings of a file, and the second filter considers the confidence of the downloading peer and the difference of positive and negative ratings of a file to calculate the probability to take a risk to download the file or reject it. Our filters only need the ratings of a file and this makes them suitable for popular torrent sharing websites that rank the files using a binary rating system without any information about raters. In addition, we can implement them entirely on the client side without any modification to the content sharing sites.

Locomotion is one of the most fundamental processes in the real world, and its consideration in immersive virtual environments (IVEs) is of major importance for many application domains requiring immersive walkthroughs. From a simple physics perspective, such self-motion can be defined by the three components speed, distance, and time. Determining motions in the frame of reference of a human observer imposes a significant challenge to the perceptual processes in the human brain, and the resulting speed, distance, and time percepts are not always veridical. In previous work in the area of IVEs, these components were evaluated in separate experiments, i. e., using largely different hardware, software and protocols. In this paper we analyze the perception of the three components of locomotion during immersive walkthroughs using the same setup and similar protocols. We conducted experiments in an Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) environment which showed that subjects largely underestimated virtual distances, slightly underestimated virtual speed, and we observed that subjects slightly overestimated elapsed time. human engagement is at the heart of every interactive technology. However, a concrete framework for synergizing the capabilities of humans and technologies to allow fully engaging interactions to happen is yet to be developed. We posit that such a framework should be grounded in a deeper understanding of human nature (e.g., mind-body relations), which in the field of HCI has primarily been built upon the Western philosophies. There are scattered, underexplored Eastern philosophies (e.g., Yijing, Zen) that may provide new lens and tools to analyze how humans interact with resources in their environments, including technological artefacts. Discussions of leveraging and possibly integrating Eastern and Western insights for human engagement studies will be an exciting and a radical forum for the HCI community.

Usability of educational applications is essential for the effectiveness of the learning environment. Nowadays, these applications are developed on mobile devices since their use widespread rapidly. Considering these applications would be used by children, usability evaluation methods to be used would be different than conventional methods. In this study usability evaluation of a mobile hand-writing learning application was conducted by using heuristic evaluation method called Heuristic Evaluation for Child e-Learning (HECE) method. Evaluaton was conducted with three expert and two novice evaluators and critical usability problems were determined. The results of the study would guide the development of mobile applications for children as well as enabled the improvement of the mobile application.
