A recent body of work has demonstrated that the incremental presentations of linguistic search cues can speed up visual processing in conjunctive visual search. In this paper, we investigate different processing configurations using a real-time embodied computational model and demonstrate that, different from previous hypotheses, the same incremental processing configuration can explain all experimental conditions. © 2014 Proceedings of the 36th Annual Meeting of the Cognitive science Society, CogSci 2014. Due to the improvements in computer technology, interaction between computer and human has been evolved from command-line based interfaces to natural user interfaces that enables interaction in a more human-human way such as by speech, hand and body gestures, facial expressions and eye gaze. In this study controlling three dimensional images with gestures and speech using a three dimensional depth camera is realized in order to ensure human computer interaction in a more natural way. For this purpose realized system allows starting and closing the application and interaction with the three dimensional images using only speech and gestures but not using keyboard and mouse. System allows three different speech commands to start, close the application and reset the three dimensional image. Furthermore gesture-based commands are used to rotate, pan and zoom the three dimensional image.

Technology for Older People: A Critical Review

We will present the results of a critical review of research published in a range of peer-reviewed conferences in the period 2005 - 2012 on the use of technology to support older people. We explore what problems faced by older people are being addressed by the research;whether the research is motivated by user needs;the methodologies used;the levels of target user involvement in the research;and the outcomes achieved. Eight major topics of research have been identified: mobility and wayfinding;communication and social interaction;interaction with technology;using the web;access to and exploration of information;education;support for daily living;and games and play. In addition, we have categorized the research into four main types: research that proposes technologies for older people;research to understand the use of technology by older people and their attitudes to technology;research on guidelines, standards or other information to support developers and researchers;and research that on methodologies for working with older people in the development of new technological solutions. Important gaps and weaknesses in the current research portfolio are explored. The review will provide an overview of the state of the art of technologies for promoting independent living and wellbeing of older people, which should be useful for researchers, developers and practitioners in the field. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Various studies have shown that the traditional electrooculograms (EOGs) are effective for driving fatigue detection. However, the electrode placement of the traditional EOG recording method is around eyes, which may disturb the subjects' activities, and is not convenient for practical applications. To deal with this problem, we propose a novel electrode placement on forehead and present an effective method to extract horizon electrooculogram (HEO) and vertical electrooculogram (VEO) from forehead EOG. The correlation coefficients between the extracted HEO and VEO and the corresponding traditional HEO and VEO are 0.86 and 0.78, respectively. To alleviate the inconvenience of manually labelling fatigue states, we use the videos recorded by eye tracking glasses to calculate the percentage of eye closure over time, which is a conventional indicator of driving fatigue. We use support vector machine (SVM) for regression analysis and get a rather high prediction correlation coefficient of 0.88 on average.

Graph-based knowledge representation is a hot topic for some years and still has a lot of research potential, particularly in the advancement in the application of graph-theory for creating benefits in the biomedical domain. Graphs are most powerful tools to map structures within a given data set and to recognize relationships between specific data objects. Many advantages of graph-based data structures can be found in the applicability of methods from network analysis, topology and data mining (e.g. small-world phenomenon, cluster analysis). In this paper we present the state-of-the-art in graph-based approaches for multi-touch interaction on mobile devices and we highlight some open problems to stimulate further research and future developments. This is particularly important in the medical domain, as a conceptual graph analysis may provide novel insights on hidden patterns in data, hence support interactive knowledge discovery. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Prognosis of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A data-driven approach

Individuals who suffer anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury are at higher risk of developing knee osteoarthritis (OA) and almost 50% display symptoms 10-20 years post injury. Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) often does not protect against knee OA development. Accordingly, a multiscale formulation for data-driven prognosis (DDP) of post-ACLR is developed. Unlike traditional predictive strategies that require controlled off-line measurements or 'training' for determination of constitutive parameters to derive the transitional statistics, the proposed DDP algorithm relies solely on in situ measurements. The proposed DDP scheme is capable of predicting onset of instabilities. As the need for off-line testing (or training) is obviated, it can be easily implemented for ACLR, where such controlled a priori testing is almost impossible to conduct. The DDP algorithm facilitates hierarchical handling of the large dataset and can assess the state of recovery in post-ACLR conditions based on data collected from stair ascent and descent exercises of subjects. The DDP algorithm identifies inefficient knee varus motion and knee rotation as primary difficulties experienced by some of the post-ACLR population. In such cases, levels of energy dissipation rate at the knee, and its fluctuation may be used as measures for assessing progress after ACL reconstruction. © 2015 The Author(s) Published by the Royal Society. The rapid development of nano technology and mobile devices has created high demand for shape changing mobile devices in order to provide users with more functions in less space and improved usability. However, the fundamental incompatibility between flexible displays and rigid actuator components has brought a huge barrier for commercialization of this technology. This paper presents a flexible and bendable vibrotactile actuator that can be easily applied to shape changing mobile devices. The proposed vibrotactile actuator is made with an electro-conductive membrane based on polyurethane, a base membrane, and an airgap. Actuation of the proposed actuator is controlled by a polarity of both charged membranes and the actuator performance can be modulated by increasing level of biased electric potential. A user experiment showed that the proposed actuator can provide vibrations with sufficient strength for perception.
