There are many sets of guidelines concerning the accessibility of the web for older adults, but little empirical evidence from studies with older people to support their recommendations. In addition, all the recommendations apply to text in languages using the Latin alphabet. This study investigated the effects of text color and background color on the performance and preferences of younger and older adults on webpages in the Thai language. There were 18 Thai younger participants (19 - 29 years) and 18 Thai older participants (59 - 70 years). There were three combinations of text color and color (black text on white background, white text on black background, and sepia text on off-white background). The text and background color combinations failed to have any significant effects on the performance measures of task completion rate or time spent skim reading webpages. However, for the preference measure, there was a significant difference between combinations of text and background color but no differences between the age groups. There was also a significant interaction between combinations of text and background color and age group. These results form an useful basis for web design guidelines for Thai websites for text and background color for both younger and older users. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

The case study presented in this paper aimed at discovering opportunities for ambient intelligence and new interaction methods for a future remote crane-operating environment. The theoretical objective was to carry out an experience-driven research project in an industrial work context, and the practical objective was to create and evaluate a future oriented science fiction prototype. The work was carried out in close co-operation with an industrial partner who was a domain expert in the field of crane industry. The aim was to focus on clearly defined user experience goals to which the industrial partner committed. The consequent immediate objective was to focus on two explicit experiences relating to 'Feeling of being motivated' and to 'Sense of community' that were placed at the core of the design investigations. These experiences were deliberated into a science fiction prototype entitled 'Remote operator's day in a future control centre'. The science fiction prototype was further introduced to users by twofold means: as a plain, simple short story and through an interactive experience path. The main contribution of the paper is to demonstrate how an emerging technology research of a new domain may employ science fiction prototyping method as a primary means of experience design investigations.

We report on designing natural ICT tools and solutions for integration into a non-ICT workflow at a Brazilian chronic care Center. Our healthcare worker-centered approach for continuous life-care contrasts from the more typical acute care situations that tend to be patient-centered or administrator-centered. Chronic mental care focuses on improving patients' life quality as they age in contrast to acute care. Therapy is collaboratively preparing patients to establish a routine for a normal life. Our main findings from our worker-centered design are: 1. Supporting workers communication and workflow using an online social intranet is effective, 2. Designing for appropriation as well as adoption is important and 3. Public workflow visualization can influence workers behavior. Our approach may apply to other long-term assistant scenarios as nursing homes, teaching and parenting.

In this paper, a two-level parallel spatial hashing method is presented for real-time collision detection of deformable objects based on modern GPU architecture. The second-level of spatial hashing is used to improve the culling efficiency. Moreover, a novel encoding method on GPU is proposed to compensate the inflexibility of the GPU memory system. It can efficiently determine the colliding pairs of primitives between deformable objects. The experimental results show that our method can perform high culling efficiency with low memory cost. © The Eurographics Association 2014.

Three-dimensional point clouds are generated by devices such as laser scanners and depth cameras, but their output is a set of unstructured, unlabeled points. Many scenarios require users to identify parts of the point cloud through manual annotation. Inspired by the current generation of “natural user interface” technologies, we present Slice-n-Swipe, a technique for 3D point cloud annotation based on free-hand gesture input. The technique is based on a chef's knife metaphor, and uses progressive refinement to allow the user to specify the points of interest. We demonstrate the Slice-n-Swipe concept with a prototype using the Leap Motion Controller for free-hand gesture input and a 3D mouse for virtual camera control.

We describe a new gait segmentation method based on the continuous wavelet transform to identify stride-by-stride gait cycles from measurements of foot-mounted three-dimensional (3D) accelerometers. The detection of such gait cycles is indeed a crucial step for an accurate extraction of relevant gait events such as heel strike, toe strike, heel-off, and toe-off. We demonstrate the ability of this segmentation method, used in conjunction with a validated extraction algorithm, to calculate the following gait (duration) parameters for each gait cycle during the gait of a healthy young subject and of an elderly subject with Parkinson's disease (PD) in OFF and ON states: durations of (1) loading response, (2) mid-stance, (3) push-off, (4) stance, (5) swing, (6) stride, (7) step, and (8) double support phases. The experimental results show that the proposed method can extract relevant refined gait parameters to quantify subtle gait disturbances in subjects with PD.

NTT and its research partners are participating in the "Can a robot get into the University of Tokyo?" project run by the National Institute of Informatics, which involves tackling English exams. The artificial intelligence system we developed took a mock test in 2014 and achieved a better-than-human-average score for the first time. This was a notable achievement since English exams require English knowledge and also common sense knowledge that humans take for granted but that computers do not necessarily possess. Plain text documents created and distributed on the Internet are ever changing in various forms. Mining topics of these documents has significant applications in many domains. Most of the literature is devoted to topic modeling, while sequential patterns of topics in document streams are ignored. Moreover, traditional sequential pattern mining algorithms mainly focused on frequent patterns for deterministic data sets, and thus not suitable for document streams with topic uncertainty and rare patterns. In this paper, we formulate and handle the mining problem of rare Sequential Topic Patterns (STPs) for Internet document streams, which are rare on the whole but relatively often for specific users, so also interesting. Since this type of rare STPs reflects users' specific behaviors, our work can be applied in many fields, such as personalized context-aware recommendation and real-time monitoring on abnormal user behaviors on the Internet. We propose a novel approach to discovering user-related rare STPs based on the temporal and probabilistic information of concerned topics. After extracting topics from documents by LDA and sorting the document stream into sessions for different users during different time periods, the proposed algorithms discover rare STPs by (1) mining STP candidates for each user through an efficient algorithm based on pattern-growth, and (2) generating userrelated rare STPs by pattern rarity analysis. Experiments on both synthetic and real data sets show that our approach can discover interesting rare STPs very effectively and efficiently. Copyright © SIAM.

Understanding Indirect Speech Acts (ISAs) is an integral function of human understanding of natural language. Recent attempts at understanding ISAs have used rule-based approaches to map utterances to deep semantics. While these approaches have been successful in handling a wide range of ISAs, they do not take into account the uncertainty associated with the utterance’s context, or the utterance itself. We present a new approach for understanding ISAs using the Dempster- Shafer theory of evidence and show how this approach increases the robustness of ISA inference by (1) accounting for uncertain implication rules and context, (2) fluidly adapting rules given new information, and (3) enabling better modeling of the beliefs of other agents. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.
