CTArcade: Computational thinking with games in school age children

We believe that children as young as ten can directly benefit from opportunities to engage in computational thinking. One approach to provide these opportunities is to focus on social game play. Understanding game play is common across a range of media and ages. Children can begin by solving puzzles on paper, continue on game boards, and ultimately complete their solutions on computers. Through this process, learners can be guided through increasingly complex algorithmic thinking activities that are built from their tacit knowledge and excitement about game play. This paper describes our approach to teaching computational thinking skills without traditional programming-but instead by building on children's existing game playing interest and skills. We built a system called CTArcade, with an initial game (Tic-Tac-Toe), which we evaluated with 18 children aged 10-15. The study shows that our particular approach helped young children to better articulate algorithmic thinking patterns, which were tacitly present when they played naturally on paper, but not explicitly apparent to them until they used the CTArcade interface. © 2014 Elsevier B.V..

Lately, people spend a fair amount of time with Online Social Networks. Real encounters, especially with non-related people, tend to not be encouraged any more. In this scenario, we present an application involving virtual and physical elements aiming to help people start an interaction. The presented application encompasses the use of a large video display, users' mobile devices, a projector and a micro controller for a water pump connected to a small real garden in a box. Using their smartphones collaboratively, people can fill out a virtual water container and, once the container is full, they can release the water from it, watering the real garden as a consequence. Initial observations suggest that the introduction of physical objects on an interactive system helps users understanding and using it. Besides, the possibility of causing a real effect from a virtual interaction is effective at attracting passerby users to interact with it.

Multimodal data are ubiquitous in engineering, communications, robotics, computer vision, or more generally speaking in industry and the sciences. All disciplines have developed their respective sets of analytic tools to fuse the information that is available in all measured modalities. In this paper, we provide a review of classical as well as recent machine learning methods (specifically factor models) for fusing information from functional neuroimaging techniques such as: LFP, EEG, MEG, fNIRS, and fMRI. Early and late fusion scenarios are distinguished, and appropriate factor models for the respective scenarios are presented along with example applications from selected multimodal neuroimaging studies. Further emphasis is given to the interpretability of the resulting model parameters, in particular by highlighting how factor models relate to physical models needed for source localization. The methods we discuss allow for the extraction of information from neural data, which ultimately contributes to 1) better neuroscientific understanding;2) enhance diagnostic performance;and 3) discover neural signals of interest that correlate maximally with a given cognitive paradigm. While we clearly study the multimodal functional neuroimaging challenge, the discussed machine learning techniques have a wide applicability, i.e., in general data fusion, and may thus be informative to the general interested reader. © 2015 IEEE.

This paper describes the system of Shanghai Jiao Tong Unvierity team in the CoNLL-2014 shared task. Error correction operations are encoded as a group of predefined labels and therefore the task is formulized as a multi-label classification task. For training, labels are obtained through a strict rule-based approach. For decoding, errors are detected and corrected according to the classification results. A single maximum entropy model is used for the classification implementation incorporated with an improved feature selection algorithm. Our system achieved precision of 29.83, recall of 5.16 and F_0.5 of 15.24 in the official evaluation. © 2014 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Background The clinical significance of complete revascularization for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction （STEMI） pa- tients during admission is still debatable. Methods A total of 1406 STEMI patients from the Korean Myocardial Infarction Registry with multivessel diseases without cardiogenic shock who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention （PPCI） were analyzed. We used propensity score matching （PSM） to control differences of baseline characteristics between culprit only intervention （CP） and multivessel percutaneous coronary interventions （MP）, and between double vessel disease （DVD） and triple vessel disease （TVD）. The major adverse cardiac event （MACE） was analyzed for one year after discharge. Results TVD patients showed higher incidence of MACE （14.2% vs. 8.6%, P = 0.01）, any cause of revascularization （10.6% vs. 5.9%, P - 0.01）, and repeated PCI （9.5% vs. 5.7%, P = 0.02）, as compared to DVD patients during one year after discharge. MP reduced MACE effectively （7.3% vs. 13.8%, P = 0.03）, as compared to CP for one year, but all cause of death （1.6% vs. 3.2%, P= 0.38）, Ml （0.4% vs. 0.8%, P = 1.00）, and any cause ofrevascularization （5.3% vs. 9.7%, P = 0.09） were comparable in the two treatment groups. Conclusions STEMI patients with TVD showed higher rate of MACE, as compared to DVD MP performed during PPCI or ad hoc during admission for STEMI patients without cardiogenic shock showed lower rate of MACE in this large scaled database. Therefore, MP could be considered as an effective treatment option for STEMI patients without cardiogenic shock.

The field of human-robot interaction has evolved beyond issues concerning the design and development of one person controlling one robot to exploring HRI for groups of robots and teams. Our design research explores biologically-inspired motion that is initiated by a human operator, applied to a single or a small group of robots, and used to affect the motion and path planning of another subset of robots. This exploratory design study first created a taxonomy to categorize individual robot motions, looking at how they could be categorized and used as building blocks. We then combined individual motions with time and velocity as design variables to guide our interaction design. This work led to the development of a prototype set of motions, which was applied in the development of an iPad interface. We informally evaluated this prototype with nine participants. We present challenges and design recommendations based on this effort.

Nowadays, we are witnessing a paradigm shift from traditional monolithic software systems to distributed solutions where the whole computation is partitioned among various modules that can be also located in different geographic locations. Such a change has been surely fostered by the continuous development of the network infrastructures but, more effectively, by the need to easily access information distributed almost everywhere on the planet. In this context the Service Oriented Computing (SOC) has emerged as one of the leading approaches for both the design and implementation of distributed applications. The key concepts of this paradigm are the idea of service, an independent software module that performs certain operations, and the possibility to seamlessly combine such modules in order to offer more sophisticated functionalities. In this paper, after analyzing the main characteristics that made the SOC paradigm a so widespread solution to create a framework for application-to-application interaction, we discuss, as a concrete use case, the development of a software system aimed at helping farmers in Sri Lanka to improve the quality of their cultivations and related earnings.

Generalization of large margin classification methods from the binary classification setting to the more general multicategory setting is often found to be non-trivial. In this paper, we study large margin classification methods that can be seamlessly applied to both settings, with the binary setting simply as a special case. In particular, we explore the Fisher consistency properties of multicategory majorization losses and present a construction framework of majorization losses of the 0–1 loss. Under this framework, we conduct an in-depth analysis about three widely used multicategory hinge losses. Corresponding to the three hinge losses, we propose three multicategory majorization losses based on a coherence function . The limits of the three coherence losses as the temperature approaches zero are the corresponding hinge losses, and the limits of the minimizers of their expected errors are the minimizers of the expected errors of the corresponding hinge losses. Finally, we develop multicategory large margin classification methods by using a so-called multiclass C -loss.

This paper proposes an adaptive tree-based cost aggregation strategy for stereo matching. The previous tree-based algorithms, hindered by the greediness of minimum spanning tree (MST), provide poorly adaptive support windows and have bad performance on curved and slanted surfaces. The proposed method incorporates randomness and overcomes these drawbacks by introducing loop-erased random walk (LERW) into tree construction. Experimental results over Middlebury dataset demonstrate that our LERW-based strategy outperforms other tree-based state-of-the-art strategies in most of the high resolution test cases. Our contributions include: 1) an LERW-based cost aggregation strategy;2) an LERW-based refinement method;3) mathematical analysis of the adaptability of our support windows.

Efficient video summarization leads to facilely exploring video content appropriate to the user’s intention with low cognitive *** this paper,we present a novel approach for summarizing videos in the form of multi-scale structures that exhibit different video features at different scale levels and allow exploration of video contents with multi-scale *** semantic relationship between structures is addressed and user intention is also considered and integrated in the summarization and *** paper first introduces the concept of multi-scale structures for summarizing video content and describes three different types of structures that present important features at different scale ***,a continuous zooming interaction for browsing multi-scale structures is provided to facilitate video ***,an elaborate user study is conducted showing that user performance on understanding and browsing videos is improved.
