Although ultrasonography has been widely used in clinical applications, the doctor suffers great difficulties in diagnosis due to the artifacts of ultrasound images, especially the speckle noise. This paper proposes a novel framework for speckle reduction by using a phase-based weighted least squares optimization. The proposed approach can effectively smooth out speckle noise while preserving the features in the image, e.g., edges with different contrasts. To this end, we first employ a local phase-based measure, which is theoretically intensity-invariant, to extract the edge map from the input image. The edge map is then incorporated into the weighted least squares framework to supervise the optimization during despeckling, so that low contrast edges can be retained while the noise has been greatly removed. Experimental results in synthetic and clinical ultrasound images demonstrate that our approach performs better than state-of-the-art methods.

The glutamine binding protein (GlnBP) binds l ‐glutamine and cooperates with its cognate transporters during glutamine uptake. Crystal structure analysis has revealed an open and a closed conformation for apo‐ and holo‐GlnBP, respectively. However, the detailed conformational dynamics have remained unclear. Herein, we combined NMR spectroscopy, MD simulations, and single‐molecule FRET techniques to decipher the conformational dynamics of apo‐GlnBP. The NMR residual dipolar couplings of apo‐GlnBP were in good agreement with a MD‐derived structure ensemble consisting of four metastable states. The open and closed conformations are the two major states. This four‐state model was further validated by smFRET experiments and suggests the conformational selection mechanism in ligand recognition of GlnBP.

We present an incisive spectroscopic technique for directly probing redox orbitals based on bulk electron momentum density measurements via high-resolution x-ray Compton scattering. Application of our method to spinel LixMn2O4, a lithium ion battery cathode material, is discussed. The orbital involved in the lithium insertion and extraction process is shown to mainly be the oxygen 2p orbital. Moreover, the manganese 3d states are shown to experience spatial delocalization involving 0.16±0.05 electrons per Mn site during the battery operation. Our analysis provides a clear understanding of the fundamental redox process involved in the working of a lithium ion battery.

Public access to accurate and reliable information is fundamental to democracy and democratic decision-making. In conditions of uncertainty and imperfect information, such as during political crises or controversial elections in emerging democracies, reliable information is often difficult to obtain. We investigated the uses and gratifications obtained from diverse information sources available to citizens during the months leading up to Presidential elections in Mexico in July 2012. Uses and gratifications theory states that information seeking is one of several primary needs or motivations for using different media. Reliability of information sources is key to gratification of this need. We conducted a survey about diverse information sources and their reliability with an opportunity sample of young adults at a public state university in Mexico. Our findings indicate that face-to-face and telephone communication with members of a respondent's social network, as well as social media and online news sites, were the most reliable sources of information about the elections. Television broadcasting, especially from government channels, was the least reliable. These results suggest that in conditions of relative uncertainty and imperfect information, social media and alternative (online) news sources about political events are essential to sustaining an informed public. Slow eye movement (SEM) regarded as a sign of onset of sleep is very significant for detecting driver fatigue, but its characteristics and detection algorithm have been rarely involved in the study of driver fatigue detection. In this study, some new features were extracted based on wavelet singularity analysis and statistics to detect SEMs. Six subjects participated in this simulated driving experiment, and for each subject, a more than 2 hours electro-oculogram (EOG) session was recorded. Each session was divided into SEM epochs and non-SEM epochs according to the common judgments made by the two of three experts by the visual recognition criteria of SEMs. Regarding the problem of detecting SEMs as an imbalance classification problem, and through the under-sampling and over-sampling methods a 2s horizontal electro-oculogram (HEO) signal could finally be recognized as the category of SEMs or non-SEMs with the classifiers SVM, GELM, and KNN respectively. Results prove that the proposed features was a little better than the wavelet energy features, and through the combination of the wavelet energy features and the new features based on wavelet singularity analysis and statistics, the classification results were improved obviously.

Autism spectrum and related communication and social disorders can severely affect some children's ability to engage in peer social interaction. In this article, we describe and evaluate an Authorable Virtual Peer (AVP), technology designed to help children access peer interactions by supporting them in developing critical social skills. Children interact with the AVP in three ways: (1) engaging in face-to-face interaction with a life-sized, computer-animated child;(2) creating new social behaviors for the AVP;and (3) controlling the AVP using a graphical user interface to select appropriate responses while the AVP interacts with another person. Our evaluation suggests that when an AVP is used as an activity during a social group intervention, a common intervention approach used with children with social and communication difficulties, that children's use of specific social behaviors critical to successful social interaction increases during role-play of common social situations with another child. © 2014 ACM.

Statistical semantic parser trained on sufficient in-domain data has shown robustness to speech recognition errors in end-to-end spoken dialogue systems. However, when the dialogue domain is extended, due to the introduction of new semantic slots, values and unknown speech pattern, the parsing performance may significantly degrade. Effective re-training of statistical semantic parser is therefore important. This paper describes a novel semantic parser enhancement approach for domain extension with very little new data. It employs automatic pseudo-data generation for parser re-training and domain independent rescoring to further improve parsing performance. The approach was evaluated on the DSTC3 (the third Dialog State Tracking Challenge) data corpus. Experiments showed that the proposed approach can yield consistent and significant improvements across all metrics of semantic parsing and dialog state tracking.
