In this paper, we analyse the emotion of children's stories in sentence level by considering the context information. We demonstrate that the emotion of a sentence is not only dependent on its content, but also affected by its neighbours in a story. A Hidden Markov Model (HMM) based method is proposed to model the emotion sequence and to detect whether a sentence is neutral or not. We show the important features for emotion detection by studying a children's story corpus. An empirical evaluation is conducted to investigate the efficiency of the model. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve competitive performance with the state-of-the-art methods, and it is affected more slightly by the training set than traditional classification methods. Classifier fusion is applied to combine different methods to achieve better results.

We investigate cognitive factors that are predictive of learning gains when students learn to solve equations by teaching a synthetic peer, called SimStudent. Previous empirical studies showed that prior knowledge is strongly predictive of post-test scores. However, in a recent study in the Philippines that replicated our previous study in the USA, there were students with low priorknowledge who tutored their SimStudent better than other equally low prior students. In this paper, we analyze both process data (tutoring interactions) and outcome data (test scores) to understand what makes learning by teaching more effective. The results imply a presence of individual behavioral differences beyond the difference in the prior knowledge that might have affected SimStudent's learning, which in turn had non-trivial influence on tutor learning.

We examine a large dataset collected by the Marmoset system in a CS2 course. The dataset gives us a richly detailed portrait of student behavior because it combines automatically collected program snapshots with unit tests that can evaluate the correctness of all snapshots. We find that students who start earlier tend to earn better scores, which is consistent with the findings of other researchers. We also detail the overall work habits exhibited by students. Finally, we evaluate how students use release tokens, a novel mechanism that provides feedback to students without giving away the code for the test cases used for grading, and gives students an incentive to start coding earlier. We find that students seem to use their tokens quite effectively to acquire feedback and improve their project score, though we do not find much evidence suggesting that students start coding particularly early. One common problem plaguing crowdsourcing tasks is tuning the set of worker responses: Depending on task requirements, requesters may want a large set of rich and varied worker responses (typically in subjective evaluation tasks) or a more convergent response-set (typically for more objective tasks such as fact-checking). This problem is especially salient in tasks that combine workers' responses to present a single output: Divergence in these settings could either add richness and complexity to the unified answer, or noise. In this paper we present HiveMind, a system of methods that allow requesters to tune different levels of convergence in worker participation for different tasks simply by adjusting the value of one variable. A new signal processing algorithm is developed for quantifying heel strike (HS) and toe-off (TO) event times solely from measured heel and toe coordinates during overground walking. It is based on a rough estimation of relevant local 3D position signals. An original piecewise linear fitting method is applied to these local signals to accurately identify HS and TO times without the need of using arbitrary experimental coefficients. We validated the proposed method with nine healthy subjects and a total of 322 trials. The extracted temporal gait events were compared to reference data obtained from a force plate. HS and TO times were identified with a temporal accuracy ± precision of 0.3 ms ± 7.1 ms, and -2.8 ms ± 7.2 ms in comparison with reference data defined with a force threshold of 10 N. This algorithm improves the accuracy of the HS and TO detection. Furthermore, it can be used to perform stride-by-stride analysis during overground walking with only recorded heel and toe coordinates.

Volume data analysis often involves finding structures inside the volume. Segmentation is the standard method, but it is quite time-consuming. Alternate approaches remove context, assume prior definition of ROI or segments, or distort part of the volume. We propose a new bimanual 3D interaction technique, called Volume Cracker (VC), which allows the user to crack open a volume like a book to analyze the internal structures. VC preserves context by always displaying all the voxels, and by connecting the sub-volumes with curves joining the cracked faces. We discuss the various design choices that we made, based on observations from our prior user studies with volume datasets, inputs from domain scientists, and numerous design studios and brainstorming sessions. We also report the results of a user study comparing VC with a standard desktop interaction technique and a standard 3D bimanual interaction technique. The study used tasks from two categories of a volume analysis task taxonomy that we are designing in consultation with domain scientists. We found VC had significant advantages over the other two techniques for search and pattern recognition tasks.

With the rapid development of information systems in healthcare practices, the traditional within-clinic, face-to-face mode of patient-provider interactions are increasingly facilitated, enriched, and mediated by new types of health technologies. These technologies are designed to bring better access to patient care information, resources, and a variety of communication channels. Yet, the use of these technologies may introduce unintended impacts on both patients and health providers. In this panel, drawing from our recent studies on patient-provider interaction, the panelists will discuss the emerging issues in this field. Specifically, we discuss the impacts of new technologies on synchronous co-located interaction and asynchronous remote interaction, as well as the shifts in patient-provider interaction that will emerge as ubiquitous health technologies becomes more prevalent. We have augmented the Deep Thought logic tutor with a Hint Factory that generates data-driven, context-specific hints for an existing computer aided instructional tool. We investigate the impact of the Hint Factory's automatically generated hints on educational outcomes in a switching replications experiment that shows that hints help students persist in a deductive logic proofs tutor. Three instructors taught two semester-long courses, each teaching one semester using a logic tutor with hints, and one semester using the tutor without hints, controlling for the impact of different instructors on course outcomes. Our results show that students in the courses using a logic tutor augmented with automatically generated hints attempted and completed significantly more logic proof problems, were less likely to abandon the tutor, performed significantly better on a post-test implemented within the tutor, and achieved higher grades in the course. © 2013 IOS Press and the authors.
