This undergraduate student paper explores usage of mixed reality techniques as support tools for conceptual design. A proof-of-concept was developed to illustrate this principle. Using this as an example, a small group of designers was interviewed to determine their views on the use of this technology. These interviews are the main contribution of this paper. Several interesting applications were determined, suggesting possible usage in a wide range of domains. Paperbased sketching, mixed reality and sketch augmentation techniques complement each other, and the combination results in a highly intuitive interface. © 2009 The Author.

Device-assisted navigation is rapidly becoming a major topic in computer science. PDAs and other small devices are enabling the introduction of navigational assistants to many different spaces. These areas are generally filled with points of interest with which users may choose to interact with. The natural behavior of users in such a space is to explore, interacting with objects the user deems worthy of further interaction. We call this behavior 'opportunistic navigation.' In this paper we define the challenges associated with and put forward several criteria for enabling opportunistic navigation in Location-Based Notification Systems. Our criteria have been implemented in the form of a prototype navigational assistant, SeeVT-ART, and have undergone a preliminary field test. © 2009 IEEE.

Problem-based learning is a pedagogy that employs open-ended problems as a means of increasing student motivation and interaction in addition to achieving the intended educational goals. We present product-based learning as an extension of collaborative problem-based learning by focusing on the design and development of a product as a solution to a proposed problem. In this approach, the instructor becomes an active member of the project team, working with the students to achieve the product vision. Through this method, students take control of their own learning while working together towards group success. Such a course design allows students to become active learners in achieving learning objectives, while at the same time providing project management and team-working experience. We explain the concept of product-based learning and demonstrate the process through the design and development of an educational software application. This project shows that the product-based method can promote positive attitudes, social interaction, and intentional learning in students while motivating them to achieve the intended learning objectives. ©2009 IEEE.

This paper describes a research effort to support collaborative translation by monolingual speakers, or people that speak only the source or target language. I hypothesize that sharing knowledge across the language barrier is possible with a combination of automated (but poor quality) machine translation, language-independent communication, and existing background knowledge. I demonstrate this possibility with proof-of-concept experiments.

This paper evaluates the input performance capabilities of Velocity Threshold (I-VT) and Kalman Filter (I-KF) eye movement detection models when employed for eye-gaze-guided interface control. I-VT is a common eye movement identification model employed by the eye tracking community, but it is neither robust nor capable of handling high levels of noise present in the eye position data. Previous research implies that use of a Kalman filter reduces the noise in the eye movement signal and predicts the signal during brief eye movement failures, but the actual performance of I-KF was never evaluated. We evaluated the performance of I-VT and I-KF models using guidelines for ISO 9241 Part 9 standard, which is designed for evaluation of non keyboard/mouse input devices with emphasis on performance, comfort, and effort. Two applications were implemented for the experiment: 1) an accuracy test 2) a photo viewing application specifically designed for eye-gaze-guided control. Twenty-one subjects participated in the evaluation of both models completing a series of tasks. The results indicates that I-KF allowed participants to complete more tasks with shorter completion time while providing higher general comfort, accuracy and operation speeds with easier target selection than the I-VT model. We feel that these results are especially important to the engineers of new assistive technologies and interfaces that employ eye-tracking technology in their design. Copyright 2009 ACM.

An increasing number of temporal categorical databases are being collected: Electronic Health Records in healthcare organizations, traffic incident logs in transportation systems, or student records in universities. Finding similar records within these large databases requires effective similarity measures that capture the searcher's intent. Many similarity measures exist for numerical time series, but temporal categorical records are different. We propose a temporal categorical similarity measure, the M&M (Match & Mismatch) measure, which is based on the concept of aligning records by sentinel events, then matching events between the target and the compared records. The M&M measure combines the time differences between pairs of events and the number of mismatches. To accommodate customization of parameters in the M&M measure and results interpretation, we implemented Similan, an interactive search and visualization tool for temporal categorical records. A usability study with 8 participants demonstrated that Similan was easy to learn and enabled them to find similar records, but users had difficulty understanding the M&M measure. The usability study feedback, led to an improved version with a continuous timeline, which was tested in a pilot study with 5 participants. ©2009 IEEE.

Arranging 3D objects in Virtual Environments can be a complex, error prone and time consuming task, especially for users who are not familiar with interfaces for 3D navigation and object manipulation. In this paper, we analyze and compare novice users' performance on 3D object arrangement tasks using three interfaces that differ in the views of the 3D environment they provide: the first one is based only on a first-person view;the second one combines the first-person view and a map view in which the zoom level is manually controlled by the user;the third one extends the second with automated assistance in controlling the map zoom level during object manipulation. Our study shows that users without prior experience in 3D object arrangement prefer and actually benefit from having a map view in addition to a first person view in object arrangement tasks. interaction for desktop games is mostly limited to keyboard and mouse input. We are investigating the benefits of adding body-based interaction to complement keyboard and mouse interaction in desktop gaming. We present a proof-of-concept implementation of body-based navigation for the game World of Warcraft, and a formative evaluation to test the feasibility of this kind of interaction. Our observations provide evidence that body-based interaction in addition to keyboard and mouse can help players perform more tasks at the same time and can be especially attractive and helpful to new players. Our study also revealed design consideration for this type of interaction.
