Peer-to-peer (P2P) technology is an emerging approach to overcoming the limitations of the traditional client server architecture. However, building a highly available P2P system is quite challenging, in particular a P2P storage system. The reason is due to the fundamental nature of P2P systems: peers can join and leave at any time without any notice. Replication is one of the strategies in overcoming the unpredictable behavior of peers. A good replication algorithm should use the minimum number of replicas to provide the desired availability of data. The popular approach in the previous studies is a random placement of replicas, but it ignores the wide difference in the availability of each peer. In this paper, we develop a replica placement algorithm which exploits the availability pattern of each individual peer. By comparing our algorithm with a random placement scheme, we show that our algorithm dramatically improves the data availability with moderate overhead in terms of memory consumption and processing time in both ideal and practical conditions. © 2009 IEEE.

As the population is aging, more and more people require additional health care, either at home, in the work place or in a nursing facility. Now, a need exists for health monitoring outside of hospital conditions. These new conditions make this technology of interest for developing health care monitoring systems that can be deployed in many different environments, including the home. Other systems in development employ a wide range of different sensors, including cameras, and recording the information for processing. These systems all involve using an apartment environment seeded with sensors for detecting human behavior and activities. While these systems are embedded in assistive environments, they do not have a comprehensive approach to describe events, or handle a general and rapid deployment into different configurations using wireless technology. In this paper, we are presenting our ongoing project of deploying sensors into an assistive environment. We currently are using SunSPOT sensor motes, where each one has been programmed for a specific role based on rules describing events. In addition, we are developing a voice recognition system for reaction to human input in the same environment. Our system can be rapidly deployed without requiring additional wiring or unwanted intrusion into the human patient's life. Copyright 2009 ACM.

We present a hybrid user interface and gesture-based direct visual editing techniques for quick and rough object creation and manipulation in three-dimensional (3D) virtual environments (VEs). The user interface includes a novel table-prop to resemble an architect's physical workbench. A tracked pinch glove and a stylus pen provide both rough and fingertip level precise spatial input. For quick placement, objects do not float in space, but instead obey a set of constrained physics laws. Experimental results indicate our design is effective for architectural massing study. Our work contributes to the hardware system design and novel gesture-based interaction techniques, which have the potential to bring VEs into practical use in architecture.

Nowadays, intelligent interaction and multi-devices interaction have attracted great attention from researchers and industry, yet there are still no framework combining these two interactions together. We study this problem and present a feasible framework to solve it. This framework is based on multi-devices, and it combines interaction-data collecting, data managing and user modeling together. Furthermore, it provides flexible interfaces for application development and proposes an algorithm for integrating group model, individual model and feedback model. We developed several demos based on this framework, which demonstrate its effectiveness empirically.

Problem-based learning is a pedagogy that employs open-ended problems as a means of increasing student motivation and interaction in addition to achieving the intended educational goals. We present product-based learning as an extension of collaborative problem-based learning by focusing on the design and development of a product as a solution to a proposed problem. In this approach, the instructor becomes an active member of the project team, working with the students to achieve the product vision. Through this method, students take control of their own learning while working together towards group success. Such a course design allows students to become active learners in achieving learning objectives, while at the same time providing project management and team-working experience. We explain the concept of product-based learning and demonstrate the process through the design and development of an educational software application. This project shows that the product-based method can promote positive attitudes, social interaction, and intentional learning in students while motivating them to achieve the intended learning objectives.

Thioredoxin-1 expression levels in rat hippocampal neurons in moderate hypobaric hypoxia

Previous studies have demonstrated that preconditioning (PC) with three sessions of moderate hypoxia significantly increases the expression of the antioxidant protein thioredoxin-1 (Trx-1) in the rat hippocampus by 3 h after subsequent acute severe hypoxia as compared with non-preconditioned animals. However, it remained unclear whether this increase in Trx-1 accumulation during PC is induced before severe hypoxia or is a modification of the response to severe hypoxia. This question was addressed in the present investigation using experiments on 12 adult male Wistar rats with studies of Trx-1 expression after PC without subsequent severe hypoxia. Immunocytochemical studies were performed 3 and 24 h after three episodes of moderate hypobaric hypoxia (three sessions of 2 h at 360 mmHg with 24-h intervals). Immunoreactivity to Trx-1 24 h after the last session was significantly decreased in neurons in all the areas of the hippocampus studied (CA1, CA2, CA3, and the dentate gyrus). Immunoreactivity in CA3 was also decreased 3 h after hypoxia. These results provide evidence that moderate preconditioning hypoxia itself not only does not increase, but even significantly decreases Trx-1 expression. Thus, increases in Trx-1 contents in the hippocampus of preconditioned animals after severe hypoxia are not associated with the accumulation of this protein during PC, but with a PC-induced modification of the reaction to severe hypoxia. © 2009 Springer science+Business Media, Inc.

Device-assisted navigation is rapidly becoming a major topic in computer science. PDAs and other small devices are enabling the introduction of navigational assistants to many different spaces. These areas are generally filled with points of interest with which users may choose to interact with. The natural behavior of users in such a space is to explore, interacting with objects the user deems worthy of further interaction. We call this behavior 'opportunistic navigation.' In this paper we define the challenges associated with and put forward several criteria for enabling opportunistic navigation in location-based notification systems. Our criteria have been implemented in the form of a prototype navigational assistant, SeeVT-ART, and have undergone a preliminary field test.

Argumentation is a process that occurs often in ill-defined domains and that helps deal with the illdefinedness. Typically a notion of "correctness" for an argument in an ill-defined domain is impossible to define or verify formally because the underlying concepts are open-textured and the quality of the argument may be subject to discussion or even expert disagreement. Previous research has highlighted the advantages of graphical representations for learning argumentation skills. A number of intelligent tutoring systems have been built that support students in rendering arguments graphically, as they learn argumentation skills. The relative instructional benefits of graphical argument representations have not been reliably shown, however. In this paper we present a formative evaluation of LARGO (Legal ARgument Graph Observer), a system that enables law students graphically to represent examples of legal interpretation with hypotheticals they observe while reading texts of U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments. We hypothesized that, compared to a text-based alternative, LARGO's diagramming language geared toward depicting hypothetical reasoning processes, coupled with non-directive feedback, helps students better extract the important information from argument transcripts and better learn argumentation skills. A first pilot study, conducted with volunteer first-semester law students, provided support for the hypothesis. The system especially helped lower-aptitude students learn argumentation skills, and LARGO improved the reading skills of students as they studied expert arguments. A second study with LARGO was conducted as a mandatory part of a first-semester University law course. Although there were no differences in the learning outcomes of the two conditions, the second study showed some evidence that those students who engaged more with the argument diagrams through the advice did better than the text condition. There has been significant research in adapting the Semantic Web technologies to create flexible context aware pervasive systems to enhance fields such as assisted living or smart environments. Several ontology based techniques have been proposed to simplify modeling knowledge and its relationships, and several ontology centered middleware tools are currently being developed to provide flexible and viable solutions for application developers. However, middleware built on the basis of Semantic Web generally suffers from drawbacks in performance, which limits its practical applications in the real world. This paper proposes a framework to facilitate Quality of Service (QoS) in ontology centered context aware pervasive middleware. Our approach suggests that context-aware middleware that operate by contracting mutual agreements with the client applications and provide controls over the amount of data to be processed by them can achieve predictable performance and response times. We also propose a service contract scheme that allows both client applications and middleware to participate in the decisions regarding the necessary data transformations required by the different system components in order to improve the overall system performance.
