This study investigates the effectiveness of the application of Virtual Reality Training (VRT) in the treatment of Communication Apprehension (CA). The participants were thirty undergraduate volunteer students enrolled at the university level. Virtual reality software and hardware were used to create a virtual auditorium scene for this training. Over five sessions, participants were subjected to virtual public speaking scenarios of varying intensity. Subjective Units of Disturbance (SUD) scale was used to measure the participants' anxiety levels. The average level of anxiety reported during post-test was significantly less than that of the pre-test. The preliminary results indicated that VRT could be used as an effective method for reducing CA in clients and allow them to become involved in discussions and presentations more comfortably.

In this paper, we present a Sound Source Localization (SSL) with robot auditory system for a network-based intelligent service robots that give a service in variety places. The main goal of this paper is to analysis performance of SSL algorithm in real environment for robot. We gathered the sound databases in museum, conference hall and restaurant for SSL experiments. These places will be served by intelligent robot in actually. With using these databases, we compared some of SSL algorithms and searched that we can use the SLL for intelligent robot in real environment. Algorithms for calculating time delay are based on the advanced cross correlation and GCC (Generalized Cross-Correlation)-PHAT(Phase Transform) by frequency characteristics for calculating time delay estimation. The robot platform used in this work is wever-R2, which is a network-based intelligent service robot developed at Intelligent Robot Research Division in ETRI.

Current paper-based interfaces such as PapierCraft, provide very little feedback and this limits the scope of possible interactions. So far, there has been little systematic exploration of the structure, constraints, and contingencies of feedback-mechanisms in paper-based interaction systems for paper-only environments. We identify three levels of feedback: discovery feedback (e.g., to aid with menu learning), status-indication feedback (e.g., for error detection), and task feedback (e.g., to aid in a search task). Using three modalities (visual, tactile, and auditory) which can be easily implemented on a pen-sized computer, we introduce a conceptual matrix to guide systematic research on pen-top feedback for paper-based interfaces. Using this matrix, we implemented a multimodal pen prototype demonstrating the potential of our approach. We conducted an experiment that confirmed the efficacy of our design in helping users discover a new interface and identify and correct their errors. Copyright 2006 ACM.

When an 8th grade science teacher discusses the subject ";contraceptive methods";, s/he has to consider situations and facts that are known by teenagers to better understand their behavior and define his/her approach. Suppose that the teacher says ";the rhythm method is not one of the most efficient contraceptive methods";. But does the teacher really know which contraceptive methods are considered by that group of students? It is proposed here a framework to instance web game supported by common sense knowledge to approach the called ";transversal themes";of the school curriculum in our country, like sexual education, ethic and healthcare. The quiz game framework called ";What is it?";is presented as a support for teachers in contextualizing the content to the students' local culture, promoting a more effective and significant learning.

Today's assistive environments place pervasive technologies in the patient's living area in order to provide therapeutic or assistive type of human monitoring [13]. One type of pervasive technology commonly used is using wireless sensor motes, which can be deployed in an indoor environment. In this paper, we propose a system architecture for placing a wireless sensor network (WSN) in a home;sensor nodes are placed into different private rooms where people are intended to live. Using photocells sensors in the nodes, our system can detect the movement of people inside of the rooms. Our system also includes a web-based interface which is used to visualize the data flow in our system in real-time. We call such a WSN implementation Assistive Home Monitoring, or AtHoM. This paper studies how we can combine the WSNs architecture with a WWW application to create a system that can visualize the data remotely by reacting to the sensors deployed in the environment. This paper describes an architecture to integrate the Web with Wireless Sensor Networks for an assistive environment and how it was implemented in the context of experiments. We provide a detailed description of the architecture of the AtHoM system we designed by basing our experiments on a real-world apartment, the Heracleia Apartment., that exists inside our laboratory, the human Centered Computing Lab. We describe two different experiments implemented within the Heracleia apartment. The aim of these experiments is to validate localization algorithms and all related measurements. From the first experiment and the two subsequent applications we implemented in our apartment test bed, we found that the integration of WWW and WSNs can make the sharing of data collected by WSNs easier for people to access and visualize. Accurate and efficient localization methods in sensor networks are critical to enabling a robust assistive environment where tracking human actions and interactions are needed to predict human behavior and prevent accidents. In this paper we describe an anchor-free localization approach where the sensor motes themselves determine their location without any given starting point or additional hardware. Instead, the location is discovered by allowing sensors to branch out through their connections to each other to establish maps that define their surroundings. We describe a Geographical Distributed Localization (GDL) algorithm which consists of a set of motes that compute local maps based on their hop counts from a special mote called bootstrap. In this paper, we provide a set of requirements for real world conditions, since GDL was developed and tested using the NS2 simulation system using synthetic data. It is now desired to test GDL in a real world assistive environment and generate a set of requirements that are useful in this and other settings. To do this, we chose Tmote Invent wireless sensors and designed ways to transfer the system from simulation to laboratory. Later, we used SunSPOT motes to continue the system. In this paper we report on specific features and requirements discovered that need to be taken into consideration to account for physical limitations of the sensors, when trying to move the system from one environment to another. Also, we provide new directions of research when mapping sensor localization to real-world environments, based on the given resources and the components available. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Traditional menu designs are not well-suited for command selection on distant displays. We describe a *** interaction technique called the "roll-and-pinch menu" (rapMenu), and investigate the design space of remote menu selection using freehand gestural input. The rapMenu maps intuitive hand postures and gestures to a radial menu layout at two levels of granularity: the user rolls her hand to alter the wrist orientation, which makes a group of menu items selectable; then she touches her thumb to a particular finger (forming & pinch gesture) to select a specific item in that group. We present the visual design and behavior of the rapMenu, consider related design issues, examine design variations, and discuss the strengths and limitations of our approach.
