Video slicing-a variant of slit scanning in photography-extracts a scan line from a video frame and successively adds that line to a composite image over time. The composite image becomes a time line, where its visual patterns reflect changes in a particular area of the video stream. We extend this idea of video slicing by allowing users to draw marks anywhere on the source video to capture areas of interest. These marks, which we call slit-tears, are used in place of a scan line, and the resulting composite timeline image provides a much richer visualization of the video data. Depending on how tears are placed, they can accentuate motion, small changes, directional movement, and relational patterns. Copyright 2008 ACM.

可达性是人机交互领域中一个重要的课题。自九十年代中期起,可达性的研究在欧美开始得到普及。但是,这方面的研究在国内还较少。本文首先介绍了什么是可达性,为什么要研究可达性。然后,讨论了可达性和可用性之间的关系。先由现存的子集和交集理论出发,再通过不同的角度提出新的观点。接下来,通过介绍残疾人如何使用交互式产品,提出了三个如何提高交互式产品可达性的途径及其之间的关系。最后,讲了三种在欧美用于Web领域上的可达性测试方法,他们分别是:利用测试工具,手工测试及用户测试,并讨论了各种方法的优缺点。

This paper presents an emotional exchange framework for a socially interactive robot. The purpose of emotional exchange in social interaction between a robot and people is to make people feel that the robot is a believable living assistant, not a mere machine for information translation. Our emotional exchange framework is composed of the emotion recognition, generation, and expression systems. A user's emotion is recognized by multi-modality such as voice, dialogue, and touch. The robot's emotion is generated according to a psychological theory about cognitive emotions caused by the social interaction within people. Furthermore, the emotion intensity is regulated by the loyalty level of a robot to various users. The generated emotion is dynamically expressed by facial expression, gesture, and the musical sound of the robot. The proposed system, which is composed of all the three components that are necessary for a full emotional interaction cycle, is implemented in the real robot system and tested. The proposed framework can be a cornerstone for the design of emotion interaction and generation systems for robots.

Accurate and fast detection of abnormal traffic is of fundamental importance to VoIP security in the Next Generation Network (NGN) world. In this paper, the machine learning methods such as Decision Tree (C4.5), Naive Bayes and Support Vector Machine (SVM) were applied to identify abnormal traffic in our VoIP product relying on traffic statistics. The dataset was collected in real attack to our widely deployed VoIP product during the call load testing in our lab environment. Our result indicates that accuracy and speed of detection of the abnormal traffic is applicable to VoIP product. Their accuracy attains above 99% with 10-fold cross-validation. We emphasize that this is a promising direction to improve security, availability, reliability and performance of VoIP product by detection and prevention of the abnormal traffic.

A motivationally-aware version of the Ecolab system was developed with the aim of improving the learners' motivation. To gain some insight into the effects of motivational modeling on students' affective states, we observed the affect of 180 students interacting with either Ecolab or M-Ecolab. The affective states considered were based on existing coding schemes [10]. The results suggest that the motivationally-aware tutoring system seems to maintain students' delight over time. However, it seems the motivational interventions did not create new "virtuous cycles" of positive affect [10], or disrupt "vicious cycles", where a student persists in a negative affective state.

Steganography, as one of alternative techniques for secure communications, has drawn more and more attentions. This paper presents a covert communication model based on least significant bits (LSB) steganography in Voice over IP (VoIP). The model aims at providing nice security of secret messages and real-time performance that is vital for VoIP. Therefore, we employ a simple encryption of secret messages before embedding them. This encryption strikes a good balance between adequate short-term protection for secret messages and low latency for VoIP. Furthermore, we design a structure of embedded messages. It can provide flexible length and avoid effectually both extraction attack and deceptive attack. We evaluate the model with ITU-T G.729a as the codec of the cover speech in StegTalk, our platform for study on covert communications theory in VoIP. In this case, the proposed model can provide two optional covert transmission speeds, i.e. 0.8 kb/s and 2.6 kb/s, where the maximum payload ratio is 99.98%. The experimental results show that our method has negligible effects on speech quality and well meets the real-time requirement of VoIP.

A phase response curve (PRC) characterizes the signal transduction between oscillators such as neurons on a fixed network in a minimal manner, while spike-timing-dependent plasiticity (STDP) characterizes the way of rewiring networks in an activity-dependent manner. This paper demonstrates that these two key properties both related to the interaction times of oscillators work synergetically to carve functionally useful circuits. STDP working on neurons that prefer asynchrony converts the initial asynchronous firing to clustered firing with synchrony within a cluster. They get synchronized within a cluster despite their preference to asynchrony because STDP selectively disrupts intracluster connections, which we call wireless clustering. Our PRC analysis reveals a triad mechanism: the network structure affects how the PRC is read out to determine the synchrony tendency, the synchrony tendency affects how the STDP works, and STDP affects the network structure, closing the loop.

Designing semantic substrates for visual network exploration

A semantic substrate is a spatial template for a network, where nodes are grouped into regions and laid out within each region according to one or more node attributes. This paper shows how users can be given control in designing their own substrates and how this ability leads to a different approach to network data exploration. Users can create a semantic substrate, enter their data, get feedback from domain experts, edit the semantic substrate, and iteratively continue this procedure until the domain experts are satisfied with the insights they have gained. We illustrate this process in two case studies with domain experts working with legal precedents and food webs. Guidelines for designing substrates are provided, including how to locate, size, and align regions in a substrate, which attributes to choose for grouping nodes into regions, how to select placement methods and which attributes to set as parameters of the selected placement method. Throughout the paper, examples are illustrated with NVSS 2.0, the network visualization tool developed to explore the semantic substrate idea. © 2007 Palgrave Macmillan Ltd. All rights reserved.

We overview a new approach for displaying meteorological information in which weather features extracted from weather maps are rendered haptically. This weather display enables users to feel the weather at the geographic locality indicated by the position of the interface cursor. At present, we are exploring haptic metaphors representing wind, precipitation, and turbulence, factors relevant to aircraft flight trajectory planning.
