This is a perspective paper on community networks - sociotechnical infrastructures supporting villages, towns, and neighborhoods. Community networking is well-established, world wide, and addresses critical societal issues, such as the "crisis of community" and the sociality of the Internet. However, community network projects have not emphasized evaluation. Relatively little is known about the economic, social, and psychological consequences of community networks for the individuals, groups, and communities served. Evaluating community networks is a momentous mutual opportunity for the development of CHI evaluation methodologies and for bringing technical CHI expertise to bear on societal issues.

Users who must combine demographic, economic or other data in a geographic context are often hampered by the integration of tabular and map representations. Static, paper-based solutions limit the amount of data that can be placed on a single map or table. By providing an effective user interface, we believe that researchers, journalists, teachers, and students can explore complex data sets more rapidly and effectively. This paper presents Dynamaps, a generalized map-based information visualization tool for dynamic queries and brushing on choropleth maps. Users can use color coding to show a variable on each geographic region, and then filter out areas that do not meet the desired criteria. In addition, a scatterplot view and a details-on-demand window support overviews and specific fact-finding.

In exploring how to make programming easier for non-programmers, research into end-user environments has traditionally been concerned with designing better human-computerinteraction. That traditional focus has left open the question of how end-user environments might support human-humaninteraction. Especially in situations in which end-user environments are enlisted to facilitate learning, we hypothesize that a key benefit may be their ability to mediate conversations about a domain of interest. In what ways might end-user environments support human communication, and what design features make them well-suited to do so? Drawing on ethnographic studies of an undergraduate algorithms course in which students constructed and presented algorithm visualizations, we develop a provisional framework of six communicative dimensions of end-user environments: programming salience, typeset fidelity, story content, modifiability, controllability and referencability. To illustrate the design implications of these dimensions, we juxtapose conventional algorithm visualization technology with a prototype end-user environment specifically designed to facilitate communication about algorithms. By characterizing those aspects of end -user environments that impact social interaction, our framework provides an important extension to T.R.G. Green and M. Petre's (1996) cognitive dimensions.

This paper presents PROMAN (PROduction MANagement), a software solution applied to production management optimization for a company with an extensive variety of human and material resources and with a nonlinear production chain. The adopted solution is based on the use of generic office applications that will improve the usability of the system. On the other hand, a specific module for the visualization of Gantt charts has been developed that adjusts to the present application and to user requirements. "Associacio/spl acute/ Shalom", an SME that needs the solution that we present, will use the results of this project.

Robotics research aims to realize some aspects of human control skills in a mechanical system. We considered another approach for the control of robotic manipulators using a multi-valued function regularization network (MVRN) approximating a multiple inverse kinematics solution. We assume that we have only the input-output data pairs of joint and Cartesian space for the unknown forward kinematics relation. Using these data, we approximate global inverse kinematics mapping using the MVRN. After approximating the inverse kinematics mapping, we find collision-free joint trajectories like a human being for the given task and the environment. We also adopt an adaptive neural network control scheme for motion control with unknown dynamics. From the global viewpoint, the MVRN may be considered as the long-term memory for relatively unchanging information for the robot manipulator and an adaptive neural network controller can be thought of as the short-term memory for the time-varying information for the change of load and dynamic parameters of the plant. Using these two components, we construct a more general and global control scheme for robotic manipulators. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the overall scheme of the proposed method.

Support vector machines represent a new approach to pattern classification developed from the theory of structural risk minimization. In this paper, we present an investigation into the application of support vector machines to the confidence measurement problem in speech recognition. Specifically, based on the results from an initial decoding of an utterance during speech recognition, we derive a feature vector consisting of parameters such as word score density, N-best word score density differences, relative word score and relative word duration as input to the confidence measurement process in which hypothetically correct utterances are accepted and utterances determined to be incorrect are rejected. We propose a new approach to training support vector machines. In this paper, we train and test a support vector machines classifier and compare the results with other statistical classification methods.
