Cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications is an enabling technology to transmit control signaling or payload data for UAVs through cellular networks. Due to the line-of-sight dominant air-to-ground channels, efficient interference mitigation is crucial to UAV communications, while the conventional fixed-position antenna (FPA) arrays have limited degrees of freedom to suppress the interference between the UAV and its non-associated co-channel base stations (BSs). To address this challenge, we propose in this letter a new approach by utilizing the six-dimensional movable antenna (6DMA) arrays to enhance the interference mitigation for the UAV. Specifically, we propose an efficient block coordinate descent algorithm to iteratively optimize the antenna position vector, array rotation vector, receive beamforming vector, and associated BS of the UAV to maximize its signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio. Numerical results show that the proposed 6DMA enhanced cellular-connected UAV communication can significantly outperform that with the traditional FPA arrays and other benchmark schemes in terms of interference mitigation. © 2025 IEEE. Automated Feature Engineering (AFE) refers to automatically generate and select optimal feature sets for downstream tasks, which has achieved great success in real-world applications. Current AFE methods mainly focus on improving the effectiveness of the produced features, but ignoring the low-efficiency issue for large-scale deployment. Therefore, in this work, we propose a generic framework to improve the efficiency of AFE. Specifically, we construct the AFE pipeline based on reinforcement learning setting, where each feature is assigned an agent to perform feature transformation and selection, and the evaluation score of the produced features in downstream tasks serve as the reward to update the policy. We improve the efficiency of AFE in two perspectives. On the one hand, we develop a Feature Pre-Evaluation (FPE) Model to reduce the sample size and feature size that are two main factors on undermining the efficiency of feature evaluation. On the other hand, we devise a two-stage policy training strategy by running FPE on the pre-evaluation task as the initialization of the policy to avoid training policy from scratch. We conduct comprehensive experiments on 36 datasets in terms of both classification and regression tasks. The results show 2.9% higher performance in average and 2x higher computational efficiency comparing to state-of-the-art AFE methods.

Histopathological work in clinical labs often relies on immunostaining of proteins, which can be time-consuming and costly. Multiplexed spatial proteomics imaging can increase interpretive power, but current methods cannot cost-effectively sample the entire proteomic retinue important to diagnostic medicine or drug development. To address this challenge, we developed a conditional generative adversarial network (cGAN) that performs image-to-image (i2i) synthesis to generate accurate biomarker channels in multiplexed spatial proteomics images 1 . We approached this problem as missing biomarker expression generation, where we assumed that a given n-channel multiplexed image has p channels (biomarkers) present and q channels (biomarkers) absent, with p+q=n, and we aimed to generate the missing q channels. To improve accuracy, we selected p and q channels based on their structural similarity, as measured by a structural similarity index measure (SSIM). We demonstrated the effectiveness of our approach using spatial proteomic data from the human BioMolecular Atlas Program (HuBMAP) 2 , which we used to generate spatial representations of missing proteins through a U-Net based image synthesis pipeline. Channels were hierarchically clustered by SSIM to obtain the minimal set needed to recapitulate the underlying biology represented by the spatial landscape of proteins. We also assessed the scalability of our algorithm using regression slope analysis, which showed that it can generate increasing numbers of missing biomarkers in multiplexed spatial proteomics images. Furthermore, we validated our approach by generating a new spatial proteomics data set from human lung adenocarcinoma tissue sections and showed that our model could accurately synthesize the missing channels from this new data set. The digital transformation of production requires new methods of data integration and storage, as well as decision making and support systems that work vertically and horizontally throughout the development, production, and use cycle. In this paper, we propose Data-to-Knowledge (and Knowledge-to-Data) pipelines for production as a universal concept building on a network of Digital Shadows (a concept augmenting Digital Twins). We show a proof of concept that builds on and bridges existing infrastructure to 1) capture and semantically annotates trajectory data from multiple similar but independent robots in different organisations and use cases in a data lakehouse and 2) an independent process that dynamically queries matching data for training an inverse dynamics foundation model for robotic control. The article discusses the challenges and benefits of this approach and how Data-to-Knowledge pipelines contribute efficiency gains and industrial scalability in a World Wide Lab as a research outlook. CI-GNN: A Granger Causality-Inspired Graph Neural Network for Interpretable Brain Network-Based Psychiatric Diagnosis

There is a recent trend to leverage the power of graph neural networks (GNNs) for brain-network based psychiatric diagnosis, which, in turn, also motivates an urgent need for psychiatrists to fully understand the decision behavior of the used GNNs. However, most of the existing GNN explainers are either post-hoc in which another interpretive model needs to be created to explain a well-trained GNN, or do not consider the causal relationship between the extracted explanation and the decision, such that the explanation itself contains spurious correlations and suffers from weak faithfulness. In this work, we propose a granger causality-inspired graph neural network (CI-GNN), a built-in interpretable model that is able to identify the most influential subgraph (i.e., functional connectivity within brain regions) that is causally related to the decision (e.g., major depressive disorder patients or healthy controls), without the training of an auxillary interpretive network. CI-GNN learns disentangled subgraph-level representations α and β that encode, respectively, the causal and non-causal aspects of original graph under a graph variational autoencoder framework, regularized by a conditional mutual information (CMI) constraint. We theoretically justify the validity of the CMI regulation in capturing the causal relationship. We also empirically evaluate the performance of CI-GNN against three baseline GNNs and four state-of-the-art GNN explainers on synthetic data and three large-scale brain disease datasets. We observe that CI-GNN achieves the best performance in a wide range of metrics and provides more reliable and concise explanations which have clinical evidence. Niacin skin-flushing test is a promising method for fast and objective diagnosis of schizophrenia and affective disorder. Compared to healthy controls, the patients have attenuated flushing extent and reduced flushing rate. The traditional analysis of niacin test relies on manually evaluated flushing extent, while flushing patterns sh own in the sk in test images have not yet been considered. To exploit the potential of raw images for diagnosis and avoid subjective and time-consuming estimation of the flushing levels, we propose a CNN-LSTM hybrid model to learn the time-series of images captured in the niacin skin-flushing test. Moreover, an attention layer is introduced to enhance the model performance and interpretability. We collect a data set of 796 participants, and the experimental results show that the new model outperforms the traditional 4-point scaled measurement and conventional deep learning methods by large margins. Besides, the attention scores yielded by the model reveals key time points during the flushing reaction.

Rethinking Textual Adversarial Defense for Pre-trained Language Models

Although pre-trained language models (PrLMs) have achieved significant success, recent studies demonstrate that PrLMs are vulnerable to adversarial attacks. By generating adversarial examples with slight perturbations on different levels (sentence / word / character), adversarial attacks can fool PrLMs to generate incorrect predictions, which questions the robustness of PrLMs. However, we find that most existing textual adversarial examples are unnatural, which can be easily distinguished by both human and machine. Based on a general anomaly detector, we propose a novel metric (Degree of Anomaly) as a constraint to enable current adversarial attack approaches to generate more natural and imperceptible adversarial examples. Under this new constraint, the success rate of existing attacks drastically decreases, which reveals that the robustness of PrLMs is not as fragile as they claimed. In addition, we find that four types of randomization can invalidate a large portion of textual adversarial examples. Based on anomaly detector and randomization, we design a universal defense framework, which is among the first to perform textual adversarial defense without knowing the specific attack. Empirical results show that our universal defense framework achieves comparable or even higher after-attack accuracy with other specific defenses, while preserving higher original accuracy at the same time. Our work discloses the essence of textual adversarial attacks, and indicates that (i) further works of adversarial attacks should focus more on how to overcome the detection and resist the randomization, otherwise their adversarial examples would be easily detected and invalidated;and (ii) compared with the unnatural and perceptible adversarial examples, it is those undetectable adversarial examples that pose real risks for PrLMs and require more attention for future robustness-enhancing strategies. Pain level and pain-related behaviour classification using GRU-based sparsely-connected RNNs

There is a growing body of studies on applying deep learning to biometrics analysis. Certain circumstances, however, could impair the objective measures and accuracy of the proposed biometric data analysis methods. For instance, people with chronic pain (CP) unconsciously adapt specific body movements to protect themselves from injury or additional pain. Because there is no dedicated benchmark database to analyse this correlation, we considered one of the specific circumstances that potentially influence a person’s biometrics during daily activities in this study and classified pain level and pain-related behaviour in the EmoPain database. To achieve this, we proposed a sparsely-connected recurrent neural networks (s-RNNs) ensemble with the gated recurrent unit (GRU) that incorporates multiple autoencoders using a shared training framework. This architecture is fed by multidimensional data collected from inertial measurement unit (IMU) and surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors. Furthermore, to compensate for variations in the temporal dimension that may not be perfectly represented in the latent space of s-RNNs, we fused hand-crafted features derived from information-theoretic approaches with represented features in the shared hidden state. We conducted several experiments which indicate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches in classifying both pain level and pain-related behaviour. © 2022, CC BY.

E-ffective: A visual analytic system for exploring the emotion and effectiveness of inspirational speeches

What makes speeches effective has long been a subject for debate, and until today there is broad controversy among public speaking experts about what factors make a speech effective as well as the roles of these factors in speeches. Moreover, there is a lack of quantitative analysis methods to help understand effective speaking strategies. In this paper, we propose E-ffective, a visual analytic system allowing speaking experts and novices to analyze both the role of speech factors and their contribution in effective speeches. From interviews with domain experts and investigating existing literature, we identified important factors to consider in inspirational speeches. We obtained the generated factors from multi-modal data that were then related to effectiveness data. Our system supports rapid understanding of critical factors in inspirational speeches, including the influence of emotions by means of novel visualization methods and interaction. Two novel visualizations include E-spiral (that shows the emotional shifts in speeches in a visually compact way) and E-script (that connects speech content with key speech delivery information). In our evaluation we studied the influence of our system on experts' domain knowledge about speech factors. We further studied the usability of the system by speaking novices and experts on assisting analysis of inspirational speech effectiveness. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Generative machine reading comprehension (MRC) requires a model to generate well-formed answers. For this type of MRC, answer generation method is crucial to the model performance. However, generative models, which are supposed to be the right model for the task, in generally perform poorly. At the same time, single-span extraction models have been proven effective for extractive MRC, where the answer is constrained to a single span in the passage. Nevertheless, they generally suffer from generating incomplete answers or introducing redundant words when applied to the generative MRC. Thus, we extend the single-span extraction method to multi-span, proposing a new framework which enables generative MRC to be smoothly solved as multi-span extraction. Thorough experiments demonstrate that this novel approach can alleviate the dilemma between generative models and single-span models and produce answers with better-formed syntax and semantics.
